EXPLORING DOWDESWELL TO SANDYWELL PARK TUNNEL.

  • Starting at the eastern viaduct embankment and ending at the Sandwell Park Tunnel western portal. A second go at filming this particular section of track bed, and filmed in late April. I tried initially in 2022, in late May, but a combination of tall nettles, goose grass and horse flies made filming impossible. The woodland came up for auction last January, but to date, has not been sold. It has a price tag of £7.5k and would be better gifted to Woodland Trust IMO. The timber has little or no commercial value, but the site it teeming with wildlife.

Marvellous! Persistence pays dividends with some great video footage of tunnel entrance. What a shame that beautiful viaduct was demolished in an act of vandalism. Thank you

Thank you, Malcolm. I am pleased to say that I actually saw that magnificent structure on several occasions, before it was destroyed.

Hi Ron, lovely bit of editting at the start. That must have been quite some explosion the viaduct looked really solid.
I was just thinking about the gradient when you mentioned it it dose look very steep. Not too much vegetation, I guess you filmed this in spring?
Interesting mix of styles on the tunnel portal. Well done for finding some broad gauge fenceposts😅😅
Great video, well done, have a great week

Cheers, David. Impossible to film by May due to thick vegetation. You can just about access the tunnel portal, but the track bed is completely overgrown. 🙂

Nice one Ron, I'm sure I was close to that when I used to take the bus from Cheltenham to Mooreton-in-Marsh when I taught in England...it seems to me the bus route must have been along that stretch of the A40. Anyway, great to see, and makes me long for a much overdue visit. Thanks.

Yes, you would have passed very close to the railway, on A40 tunnel hill. Of course most of that section is in a cutting so it’s out of sight. Ron.

Loved it Ron, my idea of a perfect day out, on a trackbed with lots to see. I noticed the tunnel arch had eight courses of brick, I think that is a record for me, they usually have five or six, I wonder if that was as a result of the collapse shortly after construction. I guess you parked on the A40 and walked down and back? I had quite a job gaining access at Dowdeswell when I was there. You keep pulling these adventures out of the hat, keep it up. Ron

Yes, I parked in the big lay-by at the top of tunnel hill, it’s easier to access from that point, but you need to be in there early spring because it gets impassable in the summer. Not sure why the extra courses of brick unless the park owners asked for extra quality structures. We will never know! I did a quick check on the auction site yesterday and the woodland did not sell. Take care. Ron

@@ParkinsonsWalks it would be perfect for the Woodland Trust, I’m surprised they didn’t put in a bid. There is a safety issue on top of the tunnel portal though, and it’s an extremely wet site as well. Ron

On the other side of the A40 are said to be traces of the never completed line that would've gone through Fairford and Lechlade to Faringdon.

Yes, I’ve heard that rumour too, Nathan. Might have a look round during the winter.🙂👍

The connection between Fairford and Andoversford was proposed before the MSWJR connection from Watermoor was built, as a connection between Cheltenham and Oxford, and a spur from the station was built, part of which is still in situ. After it had been built a connection between the MSWJR and Fairford was put forward but at Cirencester, again it was not built, leaving Fairford as a terminus for its entire existence.

Not sure on that one, Joe. The other portal is in the park and not accessible.🙂

Interesting nonetheless, thanks for reply, we went down to explore around 6-7years ago
There used to be a hole in the door just big enough to fit your hand through we managed to get a phone in there and you could see the reflections of the number plates but couldn’t make out the vehicle types
