Gray wolf attacks elk in river in Yellowstone National Park, another way wolves change rivers.

  • A gray wolf attacks an elk in the middle of a river in Yellowstone National Park.
This dramatic footage of a wolf-elk encounter was captured by B&C Chief of Staff Tony Schoonen in Yellowstone Park over the weekend. Note how the wolf cleverly removes an obstruction in his way.
We don't know the final outcome because a park ranger asked everyone to move along.

The elk did a masterful job of using the river to its advantage. Its instincts kept it alive.

I never understand these comments. It's no more wrong for this wolf to try and kill this elk than it is for the elk to try and escape the wolf. They're only care about surviving, they couldn't careless about what you consider right or wrong. However, it turns out, whether the wolf makes a kill or the prey escapes, as they usually do, neither option is particularly better than the other.

Well done on the recording! See a lot of criticism here on the video but the average tourist doesn’t have NatGeo level camera logistics and most wildlife encounters happen a good distance away. Was it October? Also, gotta respect both the herbivores which always have to play hide and seek with life or death and the carnivores which have to hustle or to hungry! Tough life in the wild.

There are many ways wolves can actually change the course of rivers, a prime example would be the few that prey on beavers, causing an alter in the course of streams, another example would be how they control ungulate populations, and therefore with fewer veggie-eaters near narrower areas, vital vegetation to the ecosystem begins to grow around rivers, forming more pools and river channels. wolves are awesome!

The Elk was trying to use the river as a barrier so it could rest up. However the icy cold river zaps strength fast and the Elk has to eventually leave. The rested Wolf awaits its meal. Wolf wins b/c it is only a matter of time.

Maybe, the video is from early spring when the snow is melting, and, she had pups? Maybe it just hadn't eaten much because of the snow?
That elk looked like it was injured...or totally exhausted from dodging the wolf, since it didn't get to the other side of the river, and wasn't swimming. The wolf should have stuck around a little bit longer...but, it was probably exhausted too.

5 years late, but for what its worth I was there. The wolf dried off while the elk spent the next few hours standing belly-deep in the river. Around dusk the elk tried to come out, but got attacked once more by the wolf shown here as well as at least one other wolf, and the elk was brought down. Some rangers came in and chased the wolves off the carcass to drag it farther from the road, as it was very close. When I saw it the next morning, there were three wolves running around and baying at each other by the carcass.

Why are people so ignorant to how this works? The wolf is hungry. He needs to eat to survive. He is a carnivore and the elk is a source a food to him. Why does everyone think the wolf is doing this for fun or has some personal agenda to kill all elk just because he can. He's doing it to survive. There isn't a Mcdonald's that caters specially to wolves.

You're proving how much someone of your stance on this issue is unknowledgeable on the subject of which you are speaking. Wolves DO kill for fun. Game departments are very well aware of this fact. It's so common the term "joy killing" was coined for the wolves. Large packs of wolves have been known to kill dozens of elk or livestock just overnight and not hardly eat anything.
Nature is nature, yes, but that does not mean it is inherently "good" like you are trying to portray the wolves as. Nor is it bad, it is just life. The fact of the matter still remains that wolves do kill for fun and if they are not closely monitored and regulated they can, and have done in the past, destroy entire populations of game.

@@lesrach3while this is may be a true statement, the carcass still does not go to waste, as the kill will feed countless other animals, ranging from bears to insects. as other animals are the sole source of food for any carnivore, unlike humans, wolves cannot domesticate cows, pigs, chickens and other protein sources. While I support people who hunt, and I hunt deer and duck, I also realize that hunting is not necessary for us to survive. And if you want to use the "kill for fun" argument, what does that say about us, who kill for fun, or religion, or lines on a map, or different Ideas.

@@lesrach3 I'd love to see the facts as you speak of wolves killing "dozens of elk"over night.I listen, hunt, trap, and watch a lot of good unbiased documentaries, and have never seen wolves killing "dozens of elk".If any one species kills dozens of elk,its mankind, with destruction of wildlife habitat. The opening of logging roads, pipelines, and unnatural disturbances allow wolves easy access to areas in which they had more difficult time accessing.Show me case studies of these kills?Where?Go back and watch your "realty" Tv series of "mountain Men".

Brice, I'm concerned that you think that a wolf attempting to survive is torture. From that standard any animal is guilty of torture, humans especially. By your account any meat a human ingests is torture of an animal. Humans are the worst kind of creature, for hypocrisy and the pleasure torture gives them.

Boone and Crockett Club cut the wind noise. I had to mute it.
This is strange. Elk live in herds and Wolves hunt in packs. This elk and wolf must be old and/or sick as I see it. Regardless, the elk can live on grass, but the wolf must hunt and kill to live. So, I hope the wolf is successful in hunting and finds itself back in a pack to survive.

My money is on the wolf. The elk staying in the river only delays death. That ice cold river drains the energy of the elk. The wolf waits reserving it's energy for the most part.
