@@elduderino7767 probably because he tries to promote himself as a futurist/inventor/environmentalist despite just being a ruthless businessman. His actions and the actions of his companies being exploitative and not actually environmentally sound in their design or goals.
If he really wanted to do some type of good he would get away from funneling taxpayer money into his businesses and perpetuating the use of single-owner electric vehicles. Proper mass-transit systems and modernized high speed passenger rail would be much better ventures for humanity instead of embracing the status quo of the fantasy-driven infinite growth on a finite planet economic model.
And to be clear he's not the first industrial CEO who has developed such a large cult of personality - which is a major problem within modern industrial society. He's just one of the most recent utilizers of the bernaysian public manipulation tactics that have damaged so much of modern society.

The overlap is actually pretty slim. Elon memes about Dogecoin, and those people like Elon, but everyone outside of the Doge sphere hates him. Elon manipulated the value of Bitcoin with his Twitter. To some of these people, that's a cardinal sin. The crypto community largely does not like Elon and sees him as part of the problem they're fighting against.

A little late to the party but I have found this highly informative. I watched the interview with Joe Rogan as my introduction to him. I found him to be considered, thoughtful and intelligent but I also kept getting the nudge that something wasn’t quite right or didn’t add up all the way. I overrode that nagging sensation as I thought I was just being my cynical and jaded self. I guess I really SHOULD listen to those instincts.

As an opinion piece, I feel like this was a little heavy on borrowing from other opinion pieces out there on the exact same topic. Would have been nice to hear a new take or angle. Also, I believe the fan boys shouldn't be characterized in the most "straw man" of ways just to make a certain point of view seem stronger than it actually is... Musk is a wildcard and that can be interesting enough to want to watch what he does without even being a fan - a point I feel could be better acknowledged in a critique like this.

Well, that is hard to gauge because they will not disclose the net emissions from all his ventures. About all he's done is put forth the money and collected government money towards building a better lithium-ion battery and improving the design of an electric car - making it faster and sexier. It is still priced out of reach for most car owners (2.59% of the car market) and it has reliability problems. The rest of his projects have not much value. SpaceX - well, can you see a practical use for manned rocket flights at this time when small rockets can do so much more? Sure NASA will take the work and funding from him but it might be better spent on producing another Rover or unmanned flight to more asteroids. Starlink - only good for wealthy people living in remote areas at $110/ month. Hyperloop and Mars Colony I won't even comment on.
