YES! Very UN-Appreciative audience who didn't know how good they had it - watching the Magnetic Fields perform at a small club in 1996 - it will never happen again like this!
@@allanlocke5749 nothing boring about this..geez. A big part of the beauty of Stephin is his blaséness...it’s what’s charming in this performance. It’s different from the album, but beautiful in its simplicity.
i remember that tour. he was playing with ben lee that year. he's so young!!! the audiences were always stupid at that point, as they didn't realize how great he is.
How's that? If they were in the audience, wouldn't they be fans? I guess I've been to some concerts where the audience talked over the whole thing... but at least they were there! Reminds me of coffee shop recordings like Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) at Jittery Joe's or Aquarius Records. People didn't realize how significant it would be, but they still enjoyed.
Those people shouting and cheering is so philly. Brings back memories. Anybody know the name of the club? I was already in Arizona. I would have loved to have been there. Sorry. But never heard of the group until I saw this video a few months ago. Great song.
Listened to magnetic fields for a good few years now, but never came to look for videos. I obviously don’t know the band as well as everyone else, but to me it seems like Stephin is having fun with the audience here and they know it, I’d love to heckle and be told to shut up
I think the heckling is fine: it's generally fun and clever; it's keeps a performer's prima donna tendencies in check; and it's part of the trial by fire that makes a band good, if not great; and I think Stephin and the M-Fields are great!
Hi Alison, this show took place at the Khyber Pass Pub in Philly in 1996. The pub still exists, but no longer has music as great as this, only a juke box..
funkadelphiarecords Oh nice! I love that place. So cool they used to have live music - I had no idea! Thanks for the response. I hope these guys come to Philly on their next go round!

funkadelphiarecords yeah but it was boring and kinda bad. Nothing like the studio release
Grew up in Philly. Kids and young adults get like that after drinking a few.

Stephin Merritt is a musical genius
wonderful! it's so cool to see a young stephin performing
I've just discovered this song. Had no idea it was over 25 years old. It really doesn't sound it.

yea! and he laughs at the same time he messes up!
Stephin eventually grew into his voice
Stephin had already grew into his voice by then, he had been performing since the late 80s at this point in his career..
Way more fun than the stately recitals with jokey lyrics they give now a days...
very hard song to sing
funkadelphiarecords - (or anyone) Do you know where in Philly this took place?

The crowd is drunk and obnoxious. Definitely Philly.
I understand why Bill Burr went off on them.
he kinda looks like mid 1980s peter gabriel
geniuses both
He just a boy
That audience needs an attitude adjustment
