I was in Love with Stephin's own version But I absolutely adore the way Mercier have interpreted and delivered this genius masterpiece, which specially a genius songwriter as he is, realizes it and appreciates in its much organic inner works. You realize how much expert caring to each strophe, word and syllables Mercer spells them with long rich capability. Yes, not same baritone, tenor or bass voice _just his, as bare and honest as Merritt's, no tricks or added games to but clear lines delivered to cause their magic.
I also prefer magnetic fields version but the fact that Shins choose to cover it and do such a nice job affirms their unique greatness I think. Love the Shins and can't wait for their new CD (with Simple Song on it)
Love the Magnetic Fields and my fave of theirs. However I love this even more, especially the vocals. It makes me feel elated. There's another delicious version by Ludvig Moon. I wish I could hear Ludvig Moons backing but with The Shins vocals.
@LindaDynamite Best cover maybe, although Plenty is never Enough was superb too! Their best was and will be New Slang followed by Caring is creepy and Split Needles.
I love the Shins, but I'm not a fan of this cover. The Magnetic Fields are a difficult band the cover, Stephin has such a unique and mesmerizing voice.
I love the idea of paying tribute to The Magnetic Fields (and, in particular, Stephin Merritt), but I'm afraid this just didn't work for me. I just need Stephin's voice and the churning (yet lilting) rhythm of the original. On the other hand, who would I like to see cover this track... ? Nick Drake would've been interesting... (Then again, I'd love to hear Stephin cover "Pink Moon" or "Fly". For some reason, I sort've hold Stephin and Nick Drake in the same artistic space... however valid or invalid that might be.)
Joe Shmoe I'm fine with other bands paying tribute to Magnetic Fields (or any other band they choose), I just wasn't enthusiastic about the way this track fleshed out. Having said that, your comment about "gagging on a cock" reveals much about you. Anger propelled by fear and ignorance is rarely a good jumping-off point for critical commentary. If you have a problem with Stephin Merritt (or anyone else - including myself) being gay, then I guess we all know what that makes you, don't we, Mr. Schmoe?
I like both bands on their respective merits (haha), but I really don't like this cover. I find Mercer's breath pauses to be totally weird and not working with the song. Just an opinion.
OMG... Seriously?? They covered and DESTROYED The Magnetic Fields' classic "Strange Powers"??!?? Wow, is this ever bad. Shame on you pathetic shins... shame, shame shame... stick to your own crap, please... don't even touch Stephin Merritt's work.
I was in Love with Stephin's own version

This is GENIUS. Imagine a world without Merritt. Nope.
The consumer is king
And unhappiness is treason
Amazingly insightful Mr Merritt.
This version is so sweet and nostalgic sounding! I wish it were on iTunes!!!
I also prefer magnetic fields version but the fact that Shins choose to cover it and do such a nice job affirms their unique greatness I think. Love the Shins and can't wait for their new CD (with Simple Song on it)
It's a Magnetic Fields song. Just in case you don't know :) I'm a fan of both bands and I really like this version.
this is what covers are supposed to be like. a really good song can be done in many ways
This song is so fucking good a dog could sing it acapella and as long as somehow lyric and melody held true it would maintain its masterpiece
Set up would require quite the woofer
I'm gonna say it, this is better than the original. I need this on spotify.
finally someone uploaded this
Awesome cover!
Fabulous cover!! i have been trying to get the Strange Powers song from Magnetic Fields without any success...
decent Cover... does the original justice ... both Bands are Legends in their own right.. No need for hatin
escalatorfrenzy his vocal bends and peaks are sharp and shinnni it’s a good cov.

Capos totales, que suerte que hicieron un cover de esto.
Pretty good cover
Have you heard the original? You should listen to it if not, it's great.
I think it's excellent and only natural that it should be done. I could think of a ton of Magnetic Fields songs that the Shins could've written.
🖤
@pauliskewl21 - posting things in Yoda English has also been done too,
@LindaDynamite Best cover maybe, although Plenty is never Enough was superb too! Their best was and will be New Slang followed by Caring is creepy and Split Needles.
jens lekman should cover it
The next time that you like a song- leave it alone
isnt all of jens lekman just attempts at magnetic fields
but in a not bad way
@Romeoette666 A lot... apparently ha
@1991stacy yeah the voice needs to be deeper, or at least have a lower harmony
best thing the shins have done in my opinion
This cover isnt as good as the original but the Shins cover of We Will Become Silhouettes by the Postal Service is amazing!
Algorithm brought me back 😮
It's good, but it's half the original.
I love the Shins, but I'm not a fan of this cover. The Magnetic Fields are a difficult band the cover, Stephin has such a unique and mesmerizing voice.
Before him, it was originally Aan Conway leading the band vocals and their deliveries through her voice were something silvery above this planet
Yes indeed, and it would be the first time Jens Lekman sings a song with good lyrics.
its a cover
@pauliskewl21 Its been done before. Hipster you are not.
I'll have what you're smoking.
Hmmm, like the vocals. Not a fan of the backing instruments. But nothing beats Merritt's voice.
It's a good cover, but Merritt's voice is more memorable

Your comment here and your comment from two years seems to contradict itself a little.
Do you have ANY idea how much cremant, cava, and prosecco I've downed over the past 2 years? (and the comments were more like 1 year apart.)
I like both bands on their respective merits (haha), but I really don't like this cover. I find Mercer's breath pauses to be totally weird and not working with the song.
Just an opinion.
i like the shins but this is no good
This doesn't work at all
This is a fucking horrendous.
OMG... Seriously?? They covered and DESTROYED The Magnetic Fields' classic "Strange Powers"??!?? Wow, is this ever bad. Shame on you pathetic shins... shame, shame shame... stick to your own crap, please... don't even touch Stephin Merritt's work.
chill😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
