Fiber laser focal sticks make quick measurements simple and easy without dragging out the ruler and eyeballing it every time.
If you don't own a C02 laser and need a focal stick created, feel free to email me at ron@romikadesigns.com and we'll get some created for you ($2.50 each PLUS shipping).
We're a laser engraving and custom laser creations company based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but wanted to support our fellow laser makers with this channel where we can all learn something new. You can catch us out here most days working on projects for our customers, but we'll have videos of other great makers doing knocking it out of the park for their customers as well

So what kind of work do you do or CAN you do with defocusing the lens? I'm not quit sure I follow the reason to defocus it. Wouldn't you want the lens to make your beam as precise as possible?

Thanks for the question. It depends. You'll need to practice on your own, but on my fiber laser, when I'm doing stainless steel, I can either deep engrave it with black (focused) or I can stain it black (no engraving de-focused). It's just a few tricks that can be learned with practice.

@@RomikaDesigns oh ok so when you say staining it with black and the de-focusing do you mean with like a lower frequency? Is that sort of like stripping the coating off of metals or like tumblers to get a design effect? That’s just what popped into my head when you said stained, but I know you can get lighter or darker coloring on bare metal with change in frequency correct?

@@EvilErnie999 Yes, I believe. I don't change any of my settings when I defocus for stainless. For me, when I defocus my black engraving settings for stainless, it actually just changes the color of the steel to black, but doesn't engrave. In other words, it's a smooth finish. If you rub your finger across it, you wouldn't be able to tell anything was done to it. Again, it just takes practice and testing.

1:48 that Fiber Laser looks like it already has the two red laser pointer focusing assist (the two brass pieces visible in front of the lens), so why would you need a focal stick? I thought with that dual laser pointer focus system, as long as you calibrate it correctly, it'll always be in focus when those two laser points merge together at the focal point...?

You're correct. It does have the two pointers, however... Those don't always work and it's difficult (AT BEST) to determine when the two pointers intersect and are on top of each other. Also, not all of your products will allow for that point to be right in the spot where you're engraving. The focal sticks are faster/easier, but yes, you could use those if your laser has them.
