How to Rename and Delete Files with Long Names on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 using Winrar or 7Zip

- Easiest way to rename files with long names
if you get the error "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can
shorten the file name and try again, or by a location that has a shorter
path."
You can Rename file from a winrar and then delete it normally.

I've seen so many instructions on the internet for this issue and they all say you need to delete the file using cmd...and this method is so much more simpler! ..Thank you very much good sir.

Didn't work for me but I just created a rar file in the folder before the file and deleted the entire folder through winrar. Not sure why it wouldn't let me delete the file it kept saying ''couldn't find file'' or something. Thanks anyway, thumbs up!!

Go to the folder that contains the file. Right click on that folder, which will give 'New' option to make a new file. click on 'New' will give you to make different types of files, choose winrar (I chosen 7zip, because I don't have winrar). After creating the file, double click on it, it will run the software. Go one step back in the folder tree (in that winrar software window) Single Click on the desired file (don't double click), Then press F2 and now you can change its name.

I had a pdf file that I could name a long name in a regular folder and then move it to my Google Drive folder. Then, when I moved it to a more specific and deep folder on Google Drive, it stopped working because windows could not "find it". I don't know why this happened, but your simple solution helped me to finally get rid of it! Thanks a lot!
