  • Today we review real resumes from people who are applying to Product Management. The most common mistakes that I found are:
    📝 Writing a job description instead of an accomplishment.
    📈 Writing accomplishments without an impact.
    ✂️ Adding a long summary at the beginning.
    🎨 Choosing a bad format for their resume
    ❌ Spelling and other mistakes

    Thanks for taking the time to break things down Diego! I was surprised to hear that you don't recommend a summary and how intentional you are about listing achievements over descriptions. Learned a lot and am editing my resume now!

      Thank you! The thing with summaries is that most people add a summary for the sake of adding more stuff tot he resume.
      It’s ok to add a summary IF, and it’s a big IF, you’ll use it to cover, for example, the requirements of a job description and summarize that you have what they ask for in the “required” section.
      Otherwise a summary is simply not adding a lot of value

    Seeing a breakdown of resumes and your tips in action has been so useful! I always tried to put concrete, quantitative skill in a separate question, but after watching your video, it makes a lot more sense that it's more useful to demonstrate ability through achievements rather than a separate list! One question I have is how do you know if your resume is too dense? I know you recommend a couple bullet points with max two lines, but I'm struggling with knowing when there is too much text.

    Hi! This PM-specific review is really helpful, because sometimes when I read/listen to the generic resume tips, I don't quite understand how it would fit into a PM resume.
    A quick question: If I write about a project which I led as an accomplishment, so how should I quantify the impact? Should I write about the impact that the product created on customers or on the company?
    Looking forward to more such videos. :)

    • @PMDiegoGranados
      @PMDiegoGranados  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank, Vidhika! I have this other video on writing your resume and I touch on a few points on how to make it more specific to PM: th-cam.com/video/Qok3dYJjdWM/w-d-xo.html
      As far as the impact on the project you led:
      * Keep in mind that it's ok to have accomplishments without impact. If, for example, 80% of your accomplishments show impact, it's ok that 20% of don't... if it's the other way around, then definitely add impact to more accomplishments!
      * The impact can be the about what you helped the customer (or user of this projec/product) accomplish... for example, reducing times, saving costs, etc.
      * The impact can also be about your leadership - for example, with your leadership on the project you launched the project/product X time before planned.
      * And it can also be about your company - for example, because of a succesful project, you brought more business to your company that was not expected. So increased the engagement time with customer,
      Let me know if this answers your question and if you have any follow-up or different questions!

    Thanks for the great video Diego! Real-world resume samples are great!
    Quick question on the "impact" part. What if the impact of what I did is not measurable? Maybe you left the company so you cannot access the data/numbers anymore, or you improved the product development process and everyone loved it but you just don't know how much improvement/impact it made?

    • @PMDiegoGranados
      @PMDiegoGranados  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joseph, that is a good question, not everything has to be measured... but try to measure as much as possible. If you are missing one or two points it's ok.
      You could also try to measure part of the work you did, for example... delivered the project X months before planned, or increase the team about by Y... etc. Let me know if this makes sense

  • @colleentully419
    @colleentully419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I appreciate you reviewing multiple examples and walking through your thought process on each one! I often struggle with quantifying and measuring the impact of my work, mainly because I'm not entirely sure of the specific measurement (or than saying I decreased/reduced or increased something). Is using generic measurements without a number acceptable?

    • @bocelott
      @bocelott 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably just lie to be honest. I think that's what guys like these looking at your resume basically want. Because the truth is, the majority of things you do at work won't be quantifiable (for many jobs).

    I have conflicting views on the user of summary. Some recruiters prefer reading it. Also, sometimes, it is not really possible to justify how you spent your time as a product manager as most of the time, you are also dealing with ambiguity or creating systems, processes and reports. For example, as a product manager, if you are coaching new recruits, how can that be translated into a statement that shows impact through numbers? (Even though it's an important part of your job)

    Valuable insights, PM Diego. I'm going to make use of some of these tips for polishing my resume. How do we present the current job details besides accomplishments ? not needed at all ?

    • @PMDiegoGranados
      @PMDiegoGranados  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Vasu - well, if you are, for example, a project manager, or a marketing manager (or whichever your current role is), most likely the recruiters and hiring manager will already know what your role is about.
      For example: if you were a project manager and you add in your resume that you delivered projects on time and budget... does that really add any value? People know that the job of a project manager is to deliver projects in time and budget. So it’s more valuable to add accomplishments and impact instead of describing your role. Does this make sense?

    Hi Diego, this is awesome! For professionals who have 10+ years of experience after graduation, how many past job experiences should we talk about? Also, for the same crowd, where should the education lay? On the bottom or on the top?

    • @PMDiegoGranados
      @PMDiegoGranados  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! great to see that you enjoyed it! If you have 10+ years:
      1) You don't need all the jobs in your resume. Just enough that two things happen: a) you don't leave a big gap by removing a job from your resume and b) you show the skills needed for the job. b) is much more important. what you want to signal is that you have the transferrable skills to get the job!
      2) I would put it at the bottom... but honestly, I don't think any recruiter will look at a resume a be like: "oh boy, their education section is at the top (or bottom)... they are out of the process!" 😂

      Adding education before or after your work experience won’t make a difference so big that will determine whether you get an interview or not. Part of the process is to get a good resume with well written accomplishments and a good format. Check the video on my channel on how to create your resume - that might help!

      Try to keep 80% of your accomplishments with some number or magnitude "reduced X (thing) by half)... 20% of your accomplishments don't need to have it. This is not a hard rule, so the distribution can be different. The more accomplishments you can have, the better!
