    Outstanding video! Very rare movement to see a diesel in Penn. That P42 has definitely seen better days tho.

    I'm now 74 yrs old, & grew up in NY. But I was born in Washington DC, in the late 40's era. I love locomotive trains endlessly. Since the early & late 50's. As a little girl growing up, nostalgia was my inspiration. NY, Connecticut, & DC was my Mecca & Marquee. Traveling aboard the NY/New Haven trains was, soo amazing to me. Also, in those yrs back, the subway trains via Coney Island, was quaint like a bygone era movie. Straw seats, conductor wearing the early era uniform as such. The ceiling fans was a blast, from the past! Never wanted to be a train engineer etc. Just loved the old tracks, & listening to the bell sounds. Railroad crossing alert as well. Loved it! Smile. I'm hoping to ride a long distance train, via LA California. A bedroom suite, with 2 bathrooms etc. Never experienced that travel on Amtrak. Longest Amtrak travel was yrs ago, NY via Fairfax, Virginia. Blessings to all of the engineers, who've made it possible for our rail travel. LIRR/Metro/North etc.

    Most locomotives I run have a minute long delay after startup before the will generate traction power. The diesel engine doesn't need to rev high on startup for the diesel engine's sake, the revving in this case is that the P42's engine rev's high to provide head end power (as I'm sure everyone knows) but also to recharge the air brake system, which likely bled down while the engine was shut off.

  • @AmtrakandAWVRFan
    @AmtrakandAWVRFan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From what I understand now, a diesel may enter Penn Station under power, however, it will have to be shut off if it is intended to idle in the station for a long time. That’s why on weekends Metro North is able to turn off their substations for their portion of the NEC for wire maintenance on weekend nights, so the overnight regionals now use a P42 the entire corridor on the weekends.

    It has come to my attention that P42DC 108 has been selected as the Phase VI 50th anniversary unit so therefore he will get his nose damage fixed as a result of that; so the next time you see 108, he will have the ALC-42 color scheme on him with a big 50 on both sides

    @russellgxy2905 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    How rare! And it's interesting seeing 108 mere weeks before becoming an Anniversary unit!
    Now what I don't get is _why_ they let her run into Penn. A nice treat for sure but...with the long tunnels and how the entire track plan at NYP is covered up now, what made Amtrak decide to run a P42 into the station rather than have a P32AC-DM (either one of their own or even one of Metro North's) drag the train in once it got to Harmon?

    • @FFred-us9tw

      NYC has no control over what happens in Penn Station in regards to diesels. You're confusing the Park Ave tunnel city ordinance from decades ago.

      They have always been able to. It was railfans who started the rumor that is was “Illegal”. While Amtrak would always prefer to use the P32ACDM’s, if none are available then they use a normal P42
