UPDATE: After charging the two IMRs I used in my regulator, I have found that one of them has ceased to work. When I try to charge it again, it just heats up to the point where it hurts to touch. This leads me to believe that this upgrade method is safe and that I just had a faulty battery. THIS COULD RUIN YOUR BLASTER. I put two IMRs and two dummies, left it overnight, and now mine wont rev. I am currently opening it to see if I can solve this issue. Will update in replies EDIT: I think Dylan is right, the wiring is probably weaker than that of past flywheel blasters. This is most likely to either cut down on cost or to make things more difficult for modders. Hasbro has always been impartial towards modders.

You usually don't have to bypass the thermistor to run 2 IMR's in nerf flywheel blasters. I ran a stryfe on 2 IMRs with no mods as a test for a few days and it worked out fine. There must be something in the regulator that doesn't let it use higher voltage batteries. I also could've just had a bad battery or a lemon blaster.

When i open the jam door flap thing and take out the bullet, I try again and it does the same thing!!! This malfunction shreds bullets. I personally will use the IMRs for fear that the 8.4v battery will burn it out. The 8.4v battery does have noticeably more power and responsiveness though. If you want max performance, get the 8.4v. If you want a great upgrade in performance, but more safe, get the IMRs. A matter of preference.
Seems like the fears over the select fire modability was unfounded you can prob wire up the flywheels seperately to run on lipo if you want to run 180s I can see this being much more useful than anyone thought.

Do you think this would still handle, say...RC hobby grade NiMH battery packs? I still have a charger for those, from back in my RC days. I know the six-cell 7.2v packs would likely not be much of an issue, but how about the eight-cell 9.6v packs?
MishraArtificer, ive been running a stryfe, rapidstrike, and modulus on 9.6 volt hobby batteries and the modulus was the only one rewired and I have had no problems and have been running them since 2014 (except for modulus which came out a bit later) I wouldnt suggest it with the regulator tho.
My Desolator runs 3 IMRS with no mods and it's lasted for about a year now. So if the regulator's internals are of the same quality, I don't see how 3 imrs could be a problem for it.

why did you take out the thermistor?
I took it out just in case my blaster would shut down due to too much voltage

Mine shredded only certain types of ammo. I'd suggest trying different ammo.

Running 3 IMRs would kill it slowly. The switches can never handle 3 IMRs for too long.

My 8.4v packs are hobby grade NiMH. I dare not try 9.6v since I think the rapidstrike can't handle it stock.
