Water Crisis: Great discussion with- 3 Eminents :
    - 1. Hemant
    2. VISHWANATH
    3. Ganesh Shankar
    Need to keep it simple
    - Rain and waste water to be reused.
    - At Urbans, catch rain and processed water at each WARD..
    - Nallahs are a Boon.
    Keep local use,
    for homes
    for parks gardens
    We deal with Rurals separately
.Any takes, can we do them as practices for Urbans ..
    . wll wshs..

Excellent exposition by 3 experts on water. While talking about water guzzling crops, mr.viswanath omitted to mention rice/paddy. Cane and cotton are not open for reduction in acreage sown. But, rice can be replaced in a big way by millets which are equal to or better than rice in nutrition and ease of growing. With fraction of water demand.

U also need plenty of lakes per capita. U can’t have too many homes per capita. U can’t allow poor to take public spaces. Not even an inch. That should b severely punished. Poor city planning is THE MAJOR issue. By far.

Desalination plants have a major drawback. The salt disposal. Rainwater harvesting needs to be done. Mostly lack of awareness, cost might be reasons for not doing rainwater harvesting.

A truly enriching discussion. Came here from the Instagram reel. Love the innovation Uravu Labs came up with and certainly will lift burdens away from groundwater. However, the concern remains if this technology isn't used responsibly and is not regulated.
Not a criticism but just a thought we need to reflect on. We should prevent from over-exploitation impact on nature even if the atmosphere is abundant in water. Perhaps strict policies on which industries can use it, and the no. of industries that can use it should also be considered.
Otherwise, it will go from becoming a sustainable option to a true disaster (extreme rainfall pattern change, ionic charges etc).
History has taught this, hope Uravu labs will pay heed to this. All the best!

No . Its the inability of the people of Bangalore and by extension- the people of our country in developing 'logical methods to problem solving'.
A classic example of improper resolution is the comment above : blaming any political party and indirectly expecting a bunch of 'crowd pleasers' to come up with solutions to difficult problems.
Thanks for contributing to the problems and trying to deviate viewers comments and discussions into politics.

Mr. Vishwanath has given a good picture of the realities and his views regarding a macro all aspect management policy is the only solution. Tapping water from moisture will never reach the demand levels needed in our country. A simple fact that is overlooked is that we in india use water very freely for all our needs, cooking, bathing washing and toilet. Some nations believe in the use of paper, which we believe is not sanitary therefore we overuse water in every way. The only solution is to recycle water by creating water holding basins, fed by water produced by effective treatment systems, stanbilise the water with aquatic life and plants and allow the water to percolate back into the ground. There are so many waste water treatment technologies in use,but the main stumbling block is the commitment to operate them in a responsible manner. Also once treated the reuse requirement doesnt match the volume of treated water produced. Toilet flushing and greening use less than 30% of the water produced going upto about 50% at the most. This means there should be a feasible means of routing the excess water to ponds and water bodies created nearby, where the treated water can stabilise and percolate into the ground. To achieve a safe water source in this manner, it is essential that treatment systems are operated effectively and with very strict mandates on quality, with the required monitoring to ensure the required quality. This entire exercise can very easily defeated by corruption and lack of responsibility on the part of the local authorities.
It is better to depend on sustainability rather then only on cutting edge technology.

Great discussion and view points. One critical thing that is lacking in our Water domain, is the availability of comprehensive reliable and validated data. It may exist in bits and pieces but neither reliable nor comprehensive. We must avoid knee jerk reactions and putting out fires each time a water crisis occurs. The absence of reliable up-to-date data, will only result in a slipshod approach towards a critical issue such as formulating long term sustainable strategies/policies in water. .
No proper validated hydrological data, estimate of ground water (quantified and reported against time eg months) exists to enable us to make reliable estimates of demands vs supply and know exactly where we stand in terms of total quantum of water resource ie Ground + Surface water.
Secondly, every bore well that is drilled in the state must be mandated to log the cores by geotechnical engineers to develop a geotechnical map of the layers below the ground level over large geographic areas. Bore logs must be reported and stored in a centralised data base including a map with all the parameters eg. location, strata, yield etc.
This will help accurately estimate the ground water storage across the geography during different seasons, properly map the ground water movements and build system of channels/lakes/canals that will greatly enhance the ground water storage.

On desalination - within context of vacuum distillation of seawater(or any 'dirty' water), energy needed to boil water is right there all around us !
Vacuum needed to boil or evaporate this warm water is easy to achieve and consumes little energy.
It's a terribly sad irony that poor folks are reeling from and are short of water at the same time !
LTTD (Low Temperature Thermal Desalination), technology that produces copious freshwater at low cost, is another one.
There's one off the coast of Chennai... likely more coming up.
