Building a New Rail Line to my Switching Yard - HO Scale Layout

  • It's been a while since I've done any work on my ho scale layout so today I decided to finally connect my new switching yard to the mainline on my layout. This required building a new rail line to connect the two sections. I'm not sure if this is the final design to connect everything but it's certainly a solid step in the right direction.

    One of the tunnel portal edges is to close to the track. The SD40 and Big Boy hit the edges. That is likely why the Big Boy derailed (and maybe the 15" looking curve leading in/out of that tunnel).

      You need 22 to 30 % degree track . Mine does the same and I have 22 " .I just bought 30 track as I'm starting to rip up and put it in... Not looking forward to it... And my curve is in the closet so it's so hard to reach. Thinking about soldiering track before hand . Not sure if it is a good idea but .....

    That little "squiggle" you just ended up with on your mainline? You might want to test that with a Challenger or a Big Boy (or even your cab-forward), as that might be giving you problems later. But other than that....you're gonna have a great layout addition there, Harrison!!

    • @sailormatlac9114
      @sailormatlac9114 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The squiggle wasn't required. The straight track leading to the turnout should have been located between both curves to remove the S-curve. Much smoother operation and all locomotives would run perflectly there at high speed.

    I think the reason your steam locomotive came off the track is what I heard with the Diesel locomotive as it was going backwards around the 8:00 to 8:10 time. The locomotives are hitting the side of the tunnel. I hope by widening the tunnel opening that both the steam and diesel locomotives will run better. I re ran the video a couple times. Good luck.

    It looks really good . the little squiggle part on the mainline may cause some problems with bigger locomotives as Anton Bruce stated. I also think the big boy it's just too big to go through an area that small just like the real thing when it derailed in Cheyenne Wyoming because U.P didn't have the track set up for something that huge. I do like the fact that you have all three layouts connected together that is Quite a feat in itself. Good job.

    I'm the 80th like! Just to note: You can run an engine simple enough. It is when you start running cars with that engine that you find track work issues. Take out that S-curve by making it as broad as possible. To do this, start the curve further back to the long switch and ease the curve more as it reaches outward to the 22-inch curve track layout edge. It might still be a S-curve, but it would be so broad it would hardly seem like it.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 8 or so car consist I ran through seemed fine with it but yes, larger cars may be another story. The amount its self may not be an issue since the yard can't store much anyway.

    I would test that Big Boy again in the tunnel. Numerous commenters said it hit the side of the tunnel. I didn't see that. After looking at the video again I saw it jump up a little when it got to the curve outside the tunnel. The radius squeezed it off the tracks. Commenters said the SD40-2 hit the side of the tunnel. Look at the video and test it again. The SD40-2 jumps up a little ( after ) it passed the portal and when it hits that 90 degree crossing inside. That means a trip pin hanging a little low. Not an uncommon problem at 45 60 or 90 degree crossings on model pikes.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure how well a Rivarossi big boy can handle 18 radius curves however I do believe it made contact with the edge of the tunnel as well.

    • @williammcgeehan3424
      @williammcgeehan3424 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SMTMainline I see it now. The Big Boy hit the top edge of the tunnel portal laying adjacent to the track. The tunnel portal closest to the yard needs to be enlarged. This will enable at least the SD40-2 to clear it without hitting it. Try and locate a Peco left hand curved switch and replace the new switch with the curved one. This should remove most if not all of the S curve and allow your larger equipment better operation. I am not sure how your Big Boy or larger passenger will handle that curve. Jus t a few observations.

    Also a non 90 degree diamond, inside the tunnel, would have allowed you straighten that run out, and also you
