Helpful video but I have a few issues, with terminology and safety. Battery acid is sulfuric not hydrochloric acid, hence the "sulfates". And ALWAYS pour acidic solutions into water, not the other way around. That way any splashback is more dilute and less likely to cause harm. Also, it's best to use enough baking soda until it stops fizzing, then dilute with water to neutralize acid.
Yes, battery acid is typically sulfuric acid. I think people get confused because batteries can off gas hydrogen gas which is extremely flammable AND can cause an explosion (think Hindenburg). This is why you never smoke near batteries and always connect the ground last ( AWAY from the battery carburetor/fuel-injection system).
Thanks for your input. I would like to know if I can just buy Sulfuric acid from the store and pour it instead of distilled water and the old acid from the battery? Thanks

I have actually got really good results by adding a little bit of washing machine liquid detergent in water and washing it with that and then 3X rinsing and now my battery works exactly like when it was new. If you ever put that black muddy liquid in a plastic bucket you will find later that you can not wash the bucket clean from it just with water but add a bit of detergent and it washes off 100% clean that's why I used it the 2nd time I reconditioned my battery and like I said it's now like 100% new or even better
Just saw this video, looks awesome. Wondering 2 years later is the battery still running strong? My battery is on the way out I think, it reads at 12.6V after driving and drops to about 12.4 to 12.38 overnight. I have it stuck on maintenance charging for a week hoping it will not die. I think I will have to do what you are doing this winter. Last year it always read 13.4V after the drive and drops to 12.6V over night. What is your over night reading on your battery?
Good video. FYI, @10:25 -- not exactly. The device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy is for example the starter (or any other electric motor). Batteries convert chemical energy to electric potential.
Ouestion: would a high voltage DC (brief....max 1 second) PULSE put into a battery have a benefit. Would a REVERSE pulse de-sulfate the plates? The pulse HAS to be brief so as not to physically distort the plates. High voltage pulses have long been reported to rejuvenate dry cells. So would this be helpful or would ruin a typical automotive wet cell?
Thanks for the video. I watch through the whole video and I have one question. There is a mention of the battery is from 2014. How much of usage the battery had before it went bad? How may years of usage or how many miles? It would help to know the information to determine how long it take the battery to go bad as yours. Thanks.
Hi Michael, That is a great question that is hard to answer. There are many reasons why a battery can go bad. Usually in this case the battery failed from improper charging and discharging. As the battery is discharged too low it can create a coating on the surface area of the internal plates. This can be cleaned and re-activated using this method.
I want to try this on a 8V golf cart battery, which has one suspect/dead cell. It is usually charged together with the other 5 using a 48V charger. How can I recharge it on its own, having only a 6V/12V charger?

But also a hydrometer inside a tool that looks like a big turkey baster is available to help measure the dilution. Secondly, yes you can shake the case but its better to ALSO strike the case with a lump or smaller sledge hammer against a wood plank on the battery case. Of course, the pulses you're dire ting against the case have to be within sane limits. But carefully controlled sharp pulses have to lift sulfates which will not be dislodged by just "soft" shaking. You turn chemical energy into electrical energy to power an electric starter motor for your engine or your lights or the car. The alternator is supposed to recharge that battery once you get the car running the alternator has a capacitor and diodes so when you put the battery back in your car the capacitor once charged from the alternator the alternator capacitor sends it back to the battery
Really we dont know how the process turned out which would require letting that battery sit over night out side then reading the voltage prior to cranking vehicle. RIGHT?
Hello Andrew, I know the battery I performed this on was much stronger when used. But to test it you would need to charge it fully. Remove the surface charge and use a load tester to compare to the original reading.
😂 you don’t needed to saving that very old used Electrolytes Acid liquid.Just cleaning those acids holes with warm water and with baking soda to cleaning out of those batteries cells plates very well.Uses about 12 ounces of Epsom salts and about a jug of distilled water and mixing it togethernesses very well.Than pouring it back into those battery acids holes and uses a smart battery charger and settings it to repairing mode and charges that battery within 12-24 hrs.Your battery power should be restoring back to it about to that of 95-98%.That could saving you about $150-200 dollars depending cranking Amps and brands of batteries you’re buying..
You don't want to put baking soda in the battery. That neutralizes the acid. You can use distilled water and not re use the Electrolyte but it is good to start with some elecrolyte.
@@AskTheCarExperts The Epsom Salts and the distilled waters.Within 12-24 hrs minimum of electricity ⚡️ charging it.That liquid will be turning into new Electrolytes Acids liquids for the battery to uses..
Correct. I had a friend accidentally set off a trunk full of the outgassing from a bad battery when he was putting on the terminals. Full hair / eyebrow singed.
You can get dam near pure sulphuric acid for your pool. Open the bottle and it smokes. Especially on a humid day. It will explode if you add water to it. BAD move. Acid must be added to water. At 18-20 Molar strength you have a potential bomb if you add water into it.
Hi Jason, I do not have a load tester at home unfortunately. However, I did charge the battery before starting the procedure and it would not hold a charge due to the sulfates plates internally. After the cleaning it has been working great. Thanks for posting!
I'm not sure you had to go to all that trouble of flushing the battery. Just put a battery charger on it and charge the battery. I've had lots of batteries that go flat, but come to life with a charge. Often the alternator is bad and doesn't replenish the charge and eventually, the battery just runs out of gas so to speak.
Hello, Do you have a volt meter to check the current voltage of the battery apart from the charger? How long has the battery been dead? Did you try the charger on a different battery to make sure the issue is not the charger?
Hi Jeff, AGM batteries are glass cells that are sealed. If your battery does not have access to the acid via the ports in the battery you will not be able to do this procedure.
@@AskTheCarExperts I been zapping with the start feture on cen-tech battery charger. And it still won't hold it starts at about 7 amps and drops. So I'd say it's shot.
Newish batteries have much less lead in them ie thinner plates. Restoration of these is nigh on impossible. That's my observation having been in the motor trade. Very old batteries respond far better to restoration because they were built to a far spec and quality. Everything these days is to do with cost cutting materials down to the bare minimum
I boiled distilled water and mixed with baking soda and than i cleaned all the cells around 10 times. and after I filtered old chemical .and boiled 2 liters of distilled water mix with less than half pound of baking soda. and then I mix with old chemical which I filtered . ,and after I filled up all the cells. After i charged my battery 3 days and night . I check the voltage ,it comes 12.4 . when I check with charger clump with charging it comes 13 volt. as soon as i remove my charger clump the voltage drops from 13 to 12. what should I do now . should I add more baking soda or start the car with it. Can u please let me know. Thanks
First of all, what was the cold cranking current and volts prior AND after any procedure. After filtration, whats the specific gravity of the electrolyte? Does the filter material somehow chemically interact with electrolyte?
Baking soda neutralizes acid. Sulfuric, acetic, Muratic, hydriotic, all acid's. If you mix baking soda with the electrolyte from a battery you've successfully neutralized the acid. Making it impossible to charge Lead-acid battery's make electricity by chemical reaction.

Hi Shawna, To charge the battery correctly you will need a charger. Using the car would take A VERY long time and it could strain the alternator.
@@Chu3505 Interesting, I have not looked into using Epson salts.
Battery acid is not explosive. Hydrogen gas is. But not the acid
Not even a load test?
How do you know if this even worked, or just a dead battery?
Hi Jason, I do not have a load tester at home unfortunately. However, I did charge the battery before starting the procedure and it would not hold a charge due to the sulfates plates internally. After the cleaning it has been working great. Thanks for posting!
So you published a video about reconditioning a battery and you do not own a $15 battery hydrometer???
how long u can drive.
Is sulfuric acid ( H2SO4 ) not hydrochloric acid ( HCL ) jus be carful.
Lol thanks! I have had a lot of people cakrify that for me 😀
I'm not sure you had to go to all that trouble of flushing the battery. Just put a battery charger on it and charge the battery. I've had lots of batteries that go flat, but come to life with a charge. Often the alternator is bad and doesn't replenish the charge and eventually, the battery just runs out of gas so to speak.
Why don't you use baking soda to clean out battery?
Baking soda neutralizes battery acid. You need the acid for electrolysis. I would not recommend putting this in your battery. Distilled water only.
What if i get no reading from battery, charger says Err, is it fixable or is it completely dead?
Hello, Do you have a volt meter to check the current voltage of the battery apart from the charger? How long has the battery been dead? Did you try the charger on a different battery to make sure the issue is not the charger?
We wesh by peur water
I have a battery that has a date of 12/21. Won't take a charge. It's an AGM. Can I do this procedure to it?
Hi Jeff, AGM batteries are glass cells that are sealed. If your battery does not have access to the acid via the ports in the battery you will not be able to do this procedure.
Nice job
Thanks! Great way to save some money and get some extra life out of a weak battery.
My battery was frozen, I was in a hurry to warm it up. Into the microwave she goes! 💥
LOL! If you do that I want to watch the video!
was your test bench a E36?
E46
Be very carful
Indeed! Gloves and safety glasses!
Your probably SOOL if you can't access my the cells right?
Hello, Unfortunately any sealed battery is not able to be rrcovered.
@@AskTheCarExperts I been zapping with the start feture on cen-tech battery charger. And it still won't hold it starts at about 7 amps and drops. So I'd say it's shot.
@@masterdomhowie871 Yup it sounds spent unfortunately. Weak batteries can also lead to failing alternators.
Your not wrong there Jules. It's all about cost cutting or raising prices on the little guy.
Thanks
If you put baking soda mix in the battery you most likely damaged it. At this point you will need to replace the battery.
First of all, what was the cold cranking current and volts prior AND after any procedure. After filtration, whats the specific gravity of the electrolyte? Does the filter material somehow chemically interact with electrolyte?
@@cindylawrence1515 after cold temperatures drops to 22 volts. I installed my car and car start bot voltage dropped to11
Baking soda neutralizes acid!
Baking soda neutralizes acid. Sulfuric, acetic, Muratic, hydriotic, all acid's. If you mix baking soda with the electrolyte from a battery you've successfully neutralized the acid. Making it impossible to charge
Lead-acid battery's make electricity by chemical reaction.
That car sounds like it needs some help. 😂
LOL Hi Costas, She does my friend! I still have the E46 3 series and I keep going back and forth between fixing it or parting her out. nice info
Sulphuric Acid....
Yes sulfuric :)
I know right😂
proof is in the pudding
Hi Tracy, Thanks for commenting. I used to do this on small lawn tractor batteries after they sat for the winter season and went dead. It also works on car batteries. The one in my BMW 3 series is still going strong :)
You should redo this video correctly sulfuric acid funnel use etc.
Thanks for the input James. It was a fun project. Maybe I will in the future but the info and steps are all valid and this really works!
