I remember Bill Bates well. The only guy to tackle Earl Campbell by himself and taken out on a stretcher, only to return later in the game. Bill Bates was an awesome player and probably will never be duplicated again.

Dang Logical, this one really hit home. It took me back to the days when my Dad was still alive and we watched the games together, Bill Bates was our favorite player, there was a running joke in the house, if Bates didn’t make the tackle, he was in on the tackle, if he wasn’t in on the tackle he was down in the corner of your television screen getting chippy with some opposing teams player. Bates was ALL heart, you could see it in the way he carried himself. His play was second to none, I agree it’s time Jones and the NFL recognizes his contributions to the game. Bill Bates revolutionized the position and the game just like John Madden and Pat Summerall revolutionized television sportscasting and just like you, Logical, revolutionized video analysis of Dallas Cowboy players. You’re the best man, thanks for what you do!

I recall watching GA play Tennessee when Hershel was at GA and Bill Bates was at Tenn and I saw that play live. Hershel broke into the open field and Bill got set, got low and tried to stick him. Hershel ran him over and scored. But the fact that Bates was willing to take him head on showed that he feared nothing. Hershel ran over everyone in college.

He just made plays that made coaches keep him on the team. Even Jimmy said practice when it was just shorts and no pads, Bill Bates lit up Herschel Walker. We all know him as the special team ace, but he made plays at the right time. The Chicago wildcard interception especially. Working his way back from ACL tear in 1993. By that point he had more than earned his spot on the team. Sadly his family said that he has onset dementia back in 2020 and most like has CTE. The years of going all out in football caught him just like others who played this sport.

Yeah it's sad, man. Bill Bates was like a smaller version of Randy "Manster" White. White was like a middle.. Bates was like a torpedo. He was a great tackler and made plays at the right time.. very smart defender, and very hard-nosed as a player. There was a reason Jimmy Johnson kept him after taking over the Cowboys. Bates should definitely be in the Hall of Fame and the RoH. I'm 55 now and my memories of his days playing is so fresh that it's so sad to know that he's in decline due to CTE.

His high school teams were often in the state playoffs and ranked in the nation which being from Tennessee was amazing in those days. 1977-1982? He then went on to coach a Div 2 school (Carson Newman) who won several national championships. He would often take players who had been kicked off Div 1 (Notre Dame, Penn St, Fla St, Tenn, etc.)teams and coach them in life as well as football and have many NFL players and successful citizens. After listening to Michael Irvin on Joe Buck, Irvin told Jimmy Johnson there were Cowboys playing just for the check. Jimmy was still coaching the Hurricanes and when he got the call to coach the Cowboys, needless to say, Irvin and Johnson came to win. A lot of those that did not care about winning were gone. Jimmy Johnson was not having that mediocre attitude. That's what is missing from the Cowboys.

Tuinei and he were the only long time Landry Cowboys who got to play in the Super Bowls. Bill being a fan favorite is an understatement, during Jimmy's training camps everyone always felt it was going to be Bill's last year due to aging and he never having elite speed. There was always a special cheer that went up for him when he made it to the final 53. Ended up, he was there after Jimmy.

I think for the younger generation these videos are needed. For some reason we (I’m 50 years old) were educated in sports history before information was so accessible. I don’t feel most young folks know the generations of sports before them and the sports media is awful and has a case of “Greatest (insert game, player, etc) of all time” bias. Wow! I'm a native Texan, and been a Cowboys fan since I knew what football was in the 60s. Bill Bates has been a name I've heard time and time again for his plays on defense and special teams during all those games. Great video and awesome research on your part. I had no idea he was this impactful for Landry's plans and schemes, but I kept seeing him make all these great plays. I had paid attention to Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris as safeties, but Bill took it to another level. To be honest, all of those guys from back in the day who made Dallas a great franchise live in my memory. Lily, Pugh, Jordan, Garrison, Meredith, Staubach, Pearson, Hayes, White, Martin, of course LANDRY, Tex Schramm, etc. I love the OLD franchise of our beloved Cowboys. This regime under Jerry Jones makes me want to puke. I'll leave it at that and hang onto my memories of great times past. So much history and greatness, some of it has not been acknowledged. Hey Logical Cowboy, i put together an All Time Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster. I obviously couldn't fit everyone I wanted on there but i think i made a pretty good list. The only glaring omission might be Jim Jeffcoat at DE. Let me know what you think.
    Offense:
QB: Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Tony Romo
RB: Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett, Calvin Hill
    FB: Daryl Johnston
WR: Michael Irvin, Drew Pearson, Bob Hayes, Tony Hill, Dez Bryant
TE: Jason Witten, Jay Novicek, Billy Joe Dupree
OG: Nate Newton, Zach Martin, Larry Allen, John Niland
OT: Rayfield Wright, Tyron Smith, Erik Williams, Ralph Neely
    C: Travis Frederick, Mark Stepnoski
    Defense (4-3):
DT: Randy White, Bob Lily, Leon Lett, Jethro Pugh, Russel Maryland
DE: Harvey Martin, Ed Jones, George Andrie, Charles Haley
ILB: Lee Roy Jordan, Ken Norton Jr., Eugene Lockhart
OLB: Demarcus Ware, Chuck Howley, Thomas Henderson, Sean Lee
CB: Mel Renfro, Deion Sanders, Everson Walls, Cornell Green
SF: Cliff Harris, Charlie Waters, Darren Woodson
    Special Teams:
    K: Dan Bailey
    P: Matt McBriar
    LS: L.P. Ladouceur
    KR: Mel Renfro
    PR: Prime
    ST: Bill Bates, Kenny Gant

First of all, this was great in-depth list of Cowboys legends. You know your Cowboys.
Of course, there can always be an argument made by someone else, but your quarterback selections are right on! I agree with that order, although I wouldn't be mad if someone substituted Romo for White. Personally, I wouldn't. Your top 3 running backs is a fair argument, although personally I favor Zeke over Hill. Zeke, in his first 5 seasons, had more yards from scrimmage than any back in franchise history. In fact, only 2 running backs in NFL history had more yards from scrimmage than Zeke since the merger in that span. Of course, the Moose is correct. I agree with your wide receivers. I agree with your tight ends selection. I agree with your guards. I agree with your tackle selections. I agree with your centers. Great list for your defensive tackles, although I'll substitute Maryland for either La'Roi Glover or Jay Ratliff. I love Maryland, but he didn't have that many great years with Dallas. His highest sack season was 4.5 sacks. But I do understand if you're putting him here just on how important he was in our first 2 Super Bowl runs. If you're doing it for that reason, I understand. But just based on talent and stats, I'm taking Ratliff or Glover. Definitely agree with Jordan and Lockhart as your middle linebackers, but I'm swapping out Norton for Bob Breunig. Breunig was voted first-team All-NFC 4 times. This means he was the best linebacker in the NFC 4 times in his career. Your outside linebackers... great list! I think it could be a toss-up between Sean Lee and Dexter Coakley, but either is great! Dave Edwards definitely deserves an argument as well! Great cornerback selections! Great safety selections. I agree. Mel Renfro can make an argument though. But ultimately, great selections. Great special teams list! But remember Dallas had another great kicker that can rival Bailey, who no one talks about because of off-the-field scandals: Rafael Septien. He retired as the fourth most accurate field goal kicker in league history. But he also retired with a 91 percent field goal accuracy in the playoffs, which was the best in league history. This was fun, bro! That was the best list that I've read!! Who are you bro? Lol

@@thelogicalcowboy, lol at your question at the end. 🤣 I make the joke all the time that I've been a Cowboys fan since the 70s but I was born in the 80s. My family has been Cowboys fans since their inception and I love the history of things in general. History of sports, music and military history are my preferences but I love history all the same. So I was bored one day and did a deep dive into this for no reason other than to see what I can come up with. I've even watched the 70s Superbowls in their entirety with a few other games from that time sprinkled in there. Thanks a ton for the feedback.

@@thelogicalcowboy, to respond to your comments:
At QB, I really did have a tough time choosing between Romo and White. I even thought about maybe only carrying 2 QBs and you will see why later. I think I ultimately picked Romo because he did much more with much less around him, especially coaching. Don Meredith was also part of the conversation at one point but I went with Romo.
At RB, the third spot was pretty tough to choose for me because Hill had longer sustained success while Zeke had a greater peak years but fell off hard. If I get first-half Zeke, it's definitely a no brainier though. At one point, I even considered Dan Reeves, lol.
With DT and DE, the Cowboys are so stacked it's ridiculous. I didn't choose Glover because I don't really consider him a Cowboy as he was only here for 4 seasons. Talent wise, I would agree that he is an upgrade over Maryland. Here is where the exercise gets fun. We can make an argument to remove the QB3 and have one extra for DT or DE. Or you can just call the group DL and include the best ones regardless of inside or outside. I might even remove The Shark from ST since he doubles as a safety as well. Thinner at DB, wider at DL. Let me know what you think.
For ILB, I don't know why I wasn't too familiar with Beunig but man, what a miss. Definitely gonna include him on this one.
For OLB, this one was a personal preference since Sean Lee was my favorite cowboy during the time he was there. But I also chose him over Coakley because Lee has some All-pros to his belt and, IMO, had a higher football IQ. LB is also another position group that we can add to while going thin at others since our LB history is almost as stacked as our DL history.
For ST, I think I chose Bailey by default. As I was going through this, neither him nor Septian seemed like that definitive answer. We don't really have that Justin Tucker or Morten Anderson type of guy for this position like all the other positions. So switching between Septien and Bailey is somewhat of a wash, again IMO. I also previously mentioned that you can go short here with Kenny replaced by another position group.
Thanks again for the feedback. Much love for what you do.
