  • @davepangburn
    @davepangburn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +120

    When this vid says Meredith was the Cowboys first Quarterback, its misleading. First QB signed, yes. But the Cowboys first primary starting QB was Eddie LeBaron. And Eddie LeBaron was no slouch. LeBaron is one of the great overachieving QB's in NFL history. The diminutive LeBaron was only 5'7" tall, drafted out of small college in the 10th round in 1950 by the Redskins. But before coming into the league he had to fight first in the Korean War, wounded twice and earning a Purple Heart & a Bronze Star! Coming into the NFL in '52, against the odds LeBaron became a 3-time Pro Bowler in Washington & one more with the Cowboys. LeBaron was the primary starter for Dallas for 1960 & 1961 before eventually giving way to Meredith later on.

    • @georgeorwell4534

      David C. Pangburn Absolutely correct, and Eddie LeBaron was no slouch. I think he was a 4-time Pro Bowler, Rookie of the Year. Doesn’t matter, just(!) one more great Cowboy quarterback.

      I came here to give the same comment. While people think of the great Don Meredith they forget Eddie LeBarron who was the Doug Flutie of his time, but better. Though I watched Eddie play I was very young and barely remember him on TV. I mostly think of Don Meredith. But without a QB like LeBarron the possible success and survival of the Cowboys might have failed or been delayed. Imagine being that small a QB with a brand new team of castoffs from other teams. Eddie did pretty well to get a Pro Bowl right? Let's also not forget running back Don Perkins. Darn good runner.

I remember the pain, to this day, of those losses to Green Bay. #17 always took the good with the bad and always lifted his team, fans and the city, with his character and grit. I remember a radio station having a quiz one time. The question was; “who are the three quarterbacks of the Dallas Cowboys? I new the first one and looked to my dad for the other two. Watching this piece on Don Meredith, he seemed to be a fun loving guy, who enjoyed football more than most. His relationship with Tom Landry looks almost identical to the relationship between Terry Bradshaw and Chuck Noll. One fun loving, gregarious player and the tough, disciplinarian coach who butted heads with the captain of the team.

    I'm so thankful that as a kid I had guys like Don Meredith and Roger Staubach as role models in professional sports. Never thought I'd be one of those old guys that said, "Man, times and attitudes were so different back in my day." Now … think I'll go to the front porch with my coffee and wish there were kids outside playing.

      @@edwardyoung522 Exactly. It's not just what he did to put the Cowboys on the map, but what he did to put Monday Night Football on the map. MNF is a major reason why the NFL became so enormously popular in the 1970s. To understand just how important he was to MNF, all one has to do is watch one of the games from the mid-70s era -- when Alex Karras was the third man in the booth instead of Don. The magic just wasn't there. Karras didn't have even one-percent of the charm and charisma Don did. But when Don returned in 1977, so did the magic.
