Interestingly, the part of the Uetsu Main Line from Murakami to Sakata uses (nowadays) GV-E400 train sets for local passenger service. Reason: JR East in this part of Japan does not use train sets that can switch between 1,500 V DC overhead power at Murakami and 20,000 V 60 Hz AC overhead power just north of Murakami northward.
