    Loved the mission, my favourite part is a haunting little detail that blends so well into the game, the look that Shepard gives Saren's statue, like he's gonna come running off the plinth and attack.

      it is really funny that everyone sees something else in Shepard's look, because that is the way we really feel maybe?... for me it was a look of sadness and rivalry, as even tho he was my enemy, I also knew Saren wanted to control the Sovereign at first and got controlled instead, which resulted in shooting himself in head when he realised he failed

    • @JyujinPlus
      @JyujinPlus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Im closer to Stanislav’s idea. I always thought it was a look of pity.
      Saren didn’t want to rule or destroy the galaxy, Sovereign did. Saren was a victim of Sovereign’s indoctrination, and even as a Reaper puppet he wanted to help the people of the galaxy, to show the Reapers they were worth sparing. My Shepard tried to talk Saren down, tried to show him reason, and free of Indoctrination, I might’ve been as proud to fight beside him as I was Nihilus. But the only way to free Saren by the time I had him alone was for him to kill himself.
      I feel like when Shepard looks at that statue, they’re trying to see who Saren was before Sovereign. Who Saren could’ve been to them if things had been different.

    • @TOONYBOY
      @TOONYBOY 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@JyujinPlus Personally, it's a look of respect and almost nostalgia. Once upon a time, Saren was Shepard's greatest rival, his primary enemy. In many ways, Saren is responsible for all of Shepard's progress and achievements since the first game. He wouldn't have become a Spectre and he wouldn't have met all his current friends and team members. Saren reminds him of how far he's come since Eden Prime, and how all that time ago Saren was Shepard's test of will against Sovereign and the Reapers. Saren was a Spectre like Shepard, and in that way they were both connected. It's because of Saren and the revelation of his corruption by the Reapers that Shepard is even in this fight in the first place. Without Saren, Shepard wouldn't even know about the Reapers and wouldn't be on a rogue mission across the galaxy outside of galactic law trying to stop them. Saren also reflects what could happen to Shepard if he isn't careful. Even with what he did to Captain Anderson, Saren was somehow still respected by Nihilus, the Spectre who was supposed to recommend us as a Spectre to the Council. Nihilus and Saren were friends once, but he was corrupted by the fear that Sovereign manipulated. Although the fight against the Reapers isn't over, Saren represents that he's already come a long way

    I convinced her to destroy it, but i used the dialogue option telling her it's what Keiji wanted, and had her do it herself for closure. It felt the most appropriate.

    • @CognizantCheddar
      @CognizantCheddar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The best morality point gain for a paragon Shepard is to recommend the graybox be destroyed (2 renegade points for either dialogue option which selects that outcome), and have Shep do it (5 paragon points). In contrast, forcing Kasumi to do it herself only gives another 2 renegade points, meaning Shepard exclusively gets renegade points from doing it that way.
      This suggests that the story writers considered it to be cruel of Shepard to pressure Kasumi into deleting the graybox data herself.
      Kasumi gets closure whether or not she herself 'presses the button.' The actual difference in the outcome is whether or not she feels like she has to apologize to Keiji first -- suggesting that on an emotional level, Kasumi feels deleting the data herself is a betrayal. Though she seems to know that's irrational, she feels it all the same.
      Hence, it's more compassionate of Shepard to offer to do it themselves, shielding Kasumi from any feeling of guilt for the act.

    • @CognizantCheddar
      @CognizantCheddar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Not-an-Alien The unspoken truth no one wants to talk about is that a major percentage of players chose to force Kasumi to delete the data herself because they were selfishly hoping that would unlock a romance route in ME3.
      You're right that it should be Kasumi's choice. The line where Shepard says "you have to do this, you know that" when choosing to force Kasumi to delete it herself borders on gaslighting, frankly.
      I think Kasumi makes the wrong choice when allowed to choose herself, but that's ethically irrelevant. People should be allowed to make their own mistakes.

Keiji was right, she didn't need that thing to know he's always with her. I think cases like this requires time and certain midset/maturity to understand. You make an interesting point about free will. Should we prevent someone from dwelling on the past when it is stopping them from moving into the future, even if it brings them comfort in the present? Does this infringe on their freedom even if it's for their greater good (like taking keys from a drunk driver)?
    I have to agree with you. Technology can make moving on harder (ever broken up with someone with Facebook memories reminding you of the stuff you did with that person on a daily basis), but I think Kasumi would be happier and healthier once she's moved on.

      @@shadow4040 you make a valid point. Grief is a selfish emotion, but it's your emotion. No one can tell you when it's time to move on but you. Even then, maybe moving on isn't the right term. You just learn to live with that person's absence.
      I've heard it described as like a ball in a box with a button. When the ball hits the button, you feel sad. Some days the ball is small and doesn't hit the button at all. Some days it's really large and constantly hits it. The grieving process can be made better with technology, but it can also deepen grief
      I suppose another issue is Keiji didn't want the greybox to be kept, he wanted it deleted. Do the memories of a man get to tell you how to grieve for that man? I'm taking the "be cruel to be kind" approach here, but still there are many questions that you just can't answer in a TH-cam comment section.

      @@saxpackabs I thought about it long and hard, and I decided to let her keep it. I don't think destroying the grey box would really do much to make her move on, since she's surrounded by memorabilia from her time with Keiji. I thought about it like my grandfather, if I had recordings of every encounter and conversation I had with him, I'd cherish each word. It's not up to me or any of us on how she should handle memories, cause that's all the gray box is, memories.

    • @tyf.5111
      @tyf.5111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@rattles8789 Consider this: Kenji wanted that greybox deleted specifically because he didn't want Kasumi living in the past. Keeping it to comfort her is directly disrespecting his memory. One can argue that it isn't our place to tell Kasumi how to grieve and that the wishes of a dead man don't matter, but her own lover knew that given the opportunity, she would indulge in his memory and the greybox would be detrimental to her in the longterm. As her friend, isn't it our responsibility to step in when all signs point to her making an unhealthy choice for herself?
      Ultimately, if she refused to give up the greybox, we couldn't make her and it would be cruel to force it. But she can give it up. I'd like to think it is because deep down she knows it is the right choice, if the more painful one in the short term.
      Btw, not saying you're wrong for letting her keep it. I've taken both routes on various playthroughs, I think my outlook has just changed a bit over the years.

Kasumi isn't a big threat to him at the moment, she is a very good thief who's skills are comparable to the Salarians and helped Shepard. Try this first: If you got your old savefiles from ME2, try to reload it in ME2 talk to your surviving crewmates and save with another save slot. When restart ME3 from the beginng and try again to pick the save files. If this did not work:

    I ended up destroying it but I regret making the decision for Kasumi, felt like it would have been better to let her say goodbye vs just silently watching her lovers memories be erased. I would have liked if they had also said Shepard, and all Specters have grey boxes as well, something Shepard might try to deny. It would help explain why a dead specter could be resurrected with their memories intact. The grey box could hold all of that info, and then Miranda's team could us it to reconstruct Shepard's personality. Memory can't be saved when somebody dies, but a grey box might just allow it.

  • @ARWINGx1

    I would love to hear what people say regarding her keeping the Greybox and the Synthesis ending. I love this DLC character. My Shepards are always very protective of her (not in a possessive way, but in a “don’t you dare shoot at her!” way). I also love how she calls Shepard “Shep”. I don’t think any other character does that.

    • @inquisitorpig5760
      @inquisitorpig5760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She is the only one who calls Shepard 'Shep', in the games that is. Seems to have caught on with a few people like MrHulthen(should you be watching him). May or may not have with me too, though I chose to incorporate that in my totally not real fan story that I definitely didn't start to write because I wanted to get my own character(not Shepard, btw) into a thing with Kasumi, though the idea has slightly branched out and evolved from there since.
      I/my own Shepard was like that too, in my imagination. It was like, when I heard Kasumi being shot at, it was like "Ey! Stop shooting at Kasumi, you idiots!". I could totally imagine this exchange following.
      "I have a shield, you know?"(Kasumi)
      "That doesn't mean I *want* them to shoot at you!"
      Not hard for me to say Kasumi's my favorite. She's just funny/adorable in a way, and a touch relatable due to her loss with Keiji. That aspect of her story almost seemed a little too similar to the one I originally came up with for my OC(in the theme of not wanting to/being unable to move on from the one thing that reminds them of the past, due to the pain of having to face their loss properly). Before I started throwing her into other universes, that is.
      The only thing I struggle with is not butchering her family name. Thankfully, I don't have to use it.

So it really seems like if you do the side mission, she doesn't spend all her time with the Greybox and instead gets back into her life now that you've given her a push.

Basically, Keiji is resurrected and sort of regains sentient form. In other words, if you want her to keep the graybox, choose the synthesis ending, and you basically will give her boyfriend back. Kasumi at the very least explains *why* she isn’t rejoining Shepard’s crew again in the third game. And frankly it checks out.
    But from what I’ve seen of a few of your other videos on the repercussions of various Loyalty missions and the like. A good number of the SR-2’s crew from the suicide mission don’t sign back on with Shepard again… and like…
    Why? Wrex I guess I understand, while not a member of the ME2 party the dude basically becomes the closest to a Krogan king to ever exist… the dude is busy…
    Kasumi is rightfully scared and frankly out of her depth fighting the space Metal Gears…

    I would never force someone to essentially throw away their own memories just to get them to "move on". Who are you to judge whether or not that is the right move? What if they don't actually ever recover from this loss? People who have lost their significant other to death sometimes are never able to move on afterwards.
    Secondly, how do we know whether or not she's going to just magically live a happier life by destroying the gray box? We can't possibly see into the future, we don't know what life has in store for her if she destroys it, that box might end up being her one and only reprieve in life if life decides to put her through the meat grinder for the rest of her time alive.
    Lastly, in the Synthesize ending, she ACTUALLY GETS TO REUNITE WITH HER LOVER. Since that ending is the one I like the most, I consider that to be my canon ending, so it just makes sense to let her keep the gray box in the end.

      As someone who has lost a loved one and lived in depression teetering on suicidal thoughts for a year sitting on my memories and refusing to move on, until FINALLY I got some friends to clean out the things I was holding onto after I got them together. I tried to do it myself and couldn't. Best I could do was get the stuff together and ask them to do it for me. Doing so dug me out of a depressive spiral and I've been much, MUCH better ever since. Been a few years since then.
      We cherish our memories. We hold them close in our hearts. But there comes a point when you realize the physical things you're holding onto aren't consoling you anymore, they are keeping you down. They aren't helping you cope, they are keeping you depressed. Continuing a vicious downward spiral that will eventually, quite literally, destroy you. Keeping a few pictures or something but getting rid of everything else is one thing, that's what I did. Getting rid of absolutely everything would just be too heartless, cold. But these aren't physical possessions she's keeping and vicariously reliving memories through.
      They are actual memories she's diving into and reliving as if they were still happening, day after day. That's NOT healthy. She will NEVER move on that way. Since she's reliving them she'd probably never take her own life, the urge to do so would just lead her to plugging in again and "all is well" once she does. That's not a "reprieve" that's straight up refusal to move on. Not inability, outright refusal.
      What I'm getting at is destroying the greybox isn't "throwing away her memories". She still has them. She can still hold onto and cherish them. Remember them fondly for what they were. Memories are in the heart, not objects and things. That said, to keep the greybox would only serve to hold back her ability to be truly happy ever again. Even with synthesize, she won't be truly happy, because that ending has its own implications as well.
      So yes, for Kasumi's wellbeing destroying the greybox is without question the right move. Keeping it will only allow her to wear a mask with fake happiness for the rest of her days, just like I was, guaranteeing she will never be able to move on. Self sabotage, never even giving herself a chance to TRY to move on. That's not happiness, it's denial.

    A sad thing to witness makes the *observer* happier, but that's not necessarily true for the other person.
    Regardless of the choice, it's theirs to make.
    At least, IRL.

    I let her keep the graybox because I thought that's what she really wanted

      Same, plus I figured she'd move on at her own pace. All things considered, she still lives an active life in ME3, it's not like she becomes a hermit. You even meet her in the Citadel DLC, planning a heist of sorts.

    When making decisions in Mass Effect that have to do with history, I have a tendency to weigh the consequences and the culture. In humans that's a no brainer. With Kasumi I tend to go on her earth culture because it's pronounced enough in Mass Effect to make a decision. The Japanese are primarily buddhist, letting go of the past after a loved one dies is an important part of the culture. We see this reflected in Kasumi's outcomes during the quest she shows up in in Mass Effect 3. Without her being in the game as it were by having her loyalty mission completed, she becomes so focused on retrieving the grey box that it may have gotten her killed.
    The other thing I think about when it comes to decisions to do with history is how many people are impacted by the choice to let it go, especially directly impacted by the mission or by reduction in war assets (indicating loss of life or interest in fighting the reapers somehow). This philosophy automatically excludes the renegade path in Zaeed's quest in which you let the refinery workers die. These people were not there of their own accord, Zaeed has no right to put his revenge over their lives. Likewise it automatically excludes most of the renegade options in mass effect 2's loyalty missions. Garrus is on the path to becoming a fine leader, he needs to know where to draw the line so I refuse to let him take the shot. Tali the same, her credibility with the Quarians could be critical to building a coalition. For this reason I always bring Legion to her trial as well, it's an opportunity Shepard may only get once, to get to know a Geth that isn't trying to kill him and it forces the admiralty board to take a look in the mirror before the Reapers show up.
    As far as fan things go. I tend to characterize Kasumi as "Little sister to an entire alliance warship!" And I had her and Miranda play an important role in an alternate mass effect 3 I'm writing in which Kaiden is kidnapped after Horizon and experimented on, and thus absent during the early game. They rescue him and return him to the Normandy. And while he's getting his affairs back together on the Citadel Kasumi, Thane and Bau play bodyguard to him while they figure out their odds of trying to arrest the Illusive man for having Kaiden experimented on. (Probably nil). As a result of him not being there Liara was the one attacked by Dr. Eva, and she got away with a lot less damage due to toughening up after becoming the shadow broker. And instead of James crashing the shuttle, Cortez takes his place, using a controlled crash to force the situation. In the end because they rescued him Kaiden is far less suspicious of people wanting to leave Cerberus and even reaches out to help some of them reenter the Alliance.

    its also worth noting that if you take kasumi on the shadow broker base mission the shadow broker will say that shes hiding the greybox

    8:34 The fact that Kasumi's corpse isn't anywhere plainly proves she didn't die. She simply isn't loyal to Shepard, so she's done with them.

    I find it odd that I got renegade points for choosing, "It's what he wants", and "Do it."
    Seems like a noble thing, asking someone to honor their loved ones "it's what he wants". Also, I think it's quite empowering for an individual when they make the choice themselves - to put the past behind them and move on, "Do it"

    I kind of wished you could romance kasumi , that romance doesn’t mean you forget, but can finally open up again to someone again

      It would have been a better option than at least one Canon romance in me 2

      Seems inappropriate to try and romance someone who is currently in the process of grieving their former lover. "Hey, sorry your man died, but wanna come hop into bed with me?"
      Like. She clearly isn't ready for that level of commitment again. Romancing her would just be gross.

    I always tell her to destroy it since Keiji tells her to. Seems like the best option.

    Part of me really, REALLY wanted to let her keep it because i'm a paragon who wants everyone to be happy, but seeing this made me realise that she is much better off destroying it and living in the present instead of the past.
