Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope

  • The Chronoscope is a surprisingly satisfying release. It is slightly larger than a Speedmaster Professional, and slightly smaller than a Speedmaster Racing. The movement is a hand-wind column wheel chrono that has a free sprung balance and will be METAS and COSC certified. The Arabesque finish looks very good through a large exhibition case back. The dial is balanced and full, and the detail work is clean. The tapering bracelet and quick adjust clasp completes the model. I really like it! The question is:
Would it be a stronger offering if it were to be distanced from the Speedmaster? Enhance the pre-Speedmaster design inspiration, by removing the text and Lyre lugs? Celebrate the vintage aesthetic to a higher degree? I'm interested to hear your opinion below.

Speedmaster is ok not sure what they would have called it otherwise. Thanks for showing us you watch.

I think you’re 100% correct. A Speedmaster is, well, a Speedmaster. Personally I find it hard to accept even the obvious variants. For me it’s the Mooneatch, plain and simple.
Not taking anything away from this one though. I’d certainly like to have it in my wrist.

I hear where you’re coming from, but if it were really a moon watch, it would say, moon, moon, moon, first on the moon, and then a little more moon, just in case anyone forgot. Yeah, the Chronoscope is also a chronograph like other Speedies, but it has a design all its own and it’s extremely well executed. It’s a joy to hold and behold. But, maybe that’s just me.

Went into WoS to buy a SS MotM and saw this exact piece.....absolutely beautiful and it was a done deal. Pictures simply don't do it justice.

Watches always look 1000x better in person than on video and I think this looks pretty dang good in video so I could only imagine. I envy all the amazing watches you get to play with!!

Timepiece is big at 43 mm but wears smaller due to moderate lug to lug about ~48 mm. At first the dial seems big but over time I think some of the reviews are correct, the dial needs to be big to pick up the three registers (tachymeter, telemeter and pulsometer). Still not sure about the 3/4 plate on the movement side; its big and nice with the arabesque finishing, but would definitely appreciate seeing more of what a manual wind would otherwise allow to be seen. Overall love it and hope to have many adventures together with it.

The IWC Aquatimer was similar for me. The line hasn’t gotten any attention in recent years and it’s rare to see it talked about or reviewed on forums or watch media. It wasn’t on my radar at all until I just happened to try one on for fun and I fell in love with the look and the way it wears. If they updated it with their new movement, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Awesome video Bruce! I tried all the Chronoscopes at my AD and the one that spoke to me was the Panda model, I bought it and WOW! I love it! I'm wearing it more then my Rolex Sub and more the my new Tudor Root Beer GMT, and it wears smaller the the 43mm suggest, the dial has so many details that I get lost looking at it, this watch is truly a gem for Omega and a excellent alternative to the usual suspects like the Rolex Daytona Panda, Tudor Chrono Panda and the Zenith Chronomaster Sport Panda, thanks Bruce for the great content 💪😃⌚️

It's a gorgeous watch. I've seen the white dial variant in person and I was close to making it my 40th birthday gift to myself. What took away from it is the heritage and I agree Bruce - as amazing of a watch it is - it's not a speedmaster to me. To label it such is a disservice to this watch as well as the speedmaster line. Ended up getting a Breitling Montbrillant limited edition open case-back b01 with the same applied Arabic numerals and calculation circles from the inner dial extending out. It scratched my itch for this type of dial for half the price with the added advantage of the heritage - the limited edition Montbrillant is a homage to the 1st Navitimers before they were even called Navitimers (they were actually called Chronomat's in the 1940'as originally before that name went to a different branch of breitlings entirely). It's also the only Breitling B01 that i know that is both 40mm with a 20mm lug width - which is the sweet spot to me.

Same experience here. It was love at first sight and I think I appreciate it even more each time I put it on. Also, for me the well designed and executed bracelet significantly adds to both the comfort and the style. Congrats.

I've seen this watch in the flesh and simply put it looks great. It is a busy dial but well executed that my old eyes had a little trouble reading but I've certainly not ruled it out for a future purchase maybe at some point. As to the Speedy name? I'm not at all bothered about this, they could call it Aunty Mary's Lemon Cake chrono and I'd still be interested in this watch. I wish my eyes were some decades younger though.

This watch wears much closer to the Moonwatch than the 43mm would suggest. ~13mm thick, under 49mm lug to lug, this is a super wearable watch. I suspect the bezel diameter is under 43mm as well, as is the case with the Moonwatch too.

I loved the look of this watch the first time I saw it. I don't mind a busy dial, as I am a big fan of the Navitimer and have a Sinn 903. To quote one of your sayings... "This watch looks so dang cool!" The dial with the repeating circular pattern in that blue is spectacular, but that movement is what steals the show to me. It's larger and more expensive, but would love to have one.

I loved the vintage inspiration of this watch. And after I got it on my wrist I just had to have it. Bought mine back in Jan when it showed up at my ad. I wear this more than my rolex watches. The movement is excellent, the dial is awesome in person, the micro-adjust clasp is nice...but the bracelet is the weak point of this watch...and that is a very easy to fix.

What about the bracelet didn’t you like ? I’m considering this watch but haven’t seen it in person. I already have a Seamaster 300 with the mesh bracelet as the SM 300 bracelet is bulky & has no taper .

No lume. Scales that are difficult to read and that virtually no one will use. It's redundant to the 57 Speedmaster and without a date. It fits a niche but that's about it. I'll wait for the Speedmaster Super Racing. Good video, though - thanks.

It's a nice looking piece, albeit an 'extra' watch, not a one and done. No lume restricts it versatility a bit for example.

The addition of "Speedmaster" to the Chronoscope, just smacks of insecurity from Omega. They obviously didn't feel that the Chronoscope would be able to stand on its own two feet. Shame really because it's a nice watch but given the Omega Moonswatch debacle, I wouldn't expect anything less.

Yes I saw it in a dealer and I think it is much prettier in the metal than in the photos.
What I don't like is the hands. They are very classic. Yes the watch is inspired by classic watches of the 30's and 40's but the Speedmaster is a Modernist Design. And in this watch everything is Modernist. The case, the numerals on the dial and the tachymeter. Why use Classical hands on this watch then? They should have used the same hands as in the Professional.
