Apparently, the Soviets copied the B29 so exactly that all Tu4s had a half white/half green access tunnel between the cockpit and the rest of the aircraft. Boeing had simply run out of green paint when they built the captured aircraft. They also copied a small hole in one of the wings where a Boeing worker had mistakenly drilled a rivet hole in the wrong place.
While unfortunate that your wingmen couldn't be of more use than just distraction in the end; it is quite impressive, in any era, to be made an Ace in one mission.
The Tu-4 was copied from an early block B-29, so the plane inherited a lot of the faults of those early Superfortresses, which were rectified in later production models. But the copying was very exact--Stalin wanted an exact replica of a B-29, and except for stuff they had trouble sourcing or reverse engineering, like the R-3350 engines, it pretty much was, right down to the Boeing logo on the control yokes.
Excessive literalism was a safe way of dealing with Stalin's directives. It's not uncommon in some cultures. Back in the 19th century, captains of tea clippers would often have new suits of clothing made by expert Chinese tailors for a fraction of what they would have paid in London. One day, a captain brought in a pair of white duck trousers that had worn through in the seat, and been patched with some gray fabric. "Make me a new pair of trousers just like these":, he told the tailor. He came back two weeks later to be handed a magnificent pair of white duck trousers--with a big patch of gray cloth on the seat.@@alanluscombe8a553
Part of the reason it was heavier was that the Soviets were using the metric system rather than the imperial system. They didn't have sheet metal for the skin in thickness that matched. It was either slightly thinner or thicker. They went with thicker.
you are aware metric and imperial is just a measuring system half an inch is just 12,7 mmfor example i say this as an apprentice machinist who uses both, there is nothing about metric (or imperial) that would require you to use a thinner or thicker thickness than you would need, you just simply convert and then make a plate the same thickness in the other system so if i have a half inch plate and i want to make that in metric, i convert half an inch to metric and make a 12,7mm plate you can do this for extremely thin thick or anything in between plates and just convert whatever measurement you made it in to another measuring system if i have a sheet metal plate of a certain thickness, whether im using imperial or metric wont change how thick that plate is, just the number and system describing the thickness seems there is alot of misinformation going around of the mig-23 with alot just making no sense/being dreamed up
@@GlowingSpamraam First off, he's referring to the TU-4, which was reverse engineered. Second, typically you're not changing your entire sheet-metal production process for 1 plane. I read somewhere that the MiG-23 was the answer to the F-4. He was supposed to be a Phantom Hunter. Just as the MiG-29 was later the answer to the F-16..
@@danielmiller3781 I do not think. The MiG-23 is a single-seat, single-engine fighter. The F-111 is a two-seat, twin-engine fighter-bomber. So two completely different planes. The only thing that connects them is the variable geometry of the wing. Nothing more.

Love the F-4 content!! Heatblur needs to give us another update...getting pretty close to the end of the year. I know they still have like 2 months to meet their 2023 release but we all are anxious.
I just climbed through a B29 a few weeks ago along with a B24. The B29 had notches in the bay so it could fit the fins on a nuclear bomb like big boy. It also had a round air duct looking thing on the ceiling that the guys had to crawl through to get to the rear guns because the B29 was the first airplane to be pressurized and they crawled over the bomb bay because that couldn’t be.
MiG 23 is pretty good. One of my most played planes in war Thunder. With the wings fully out that thing holds energy very well. Also the thrust to weight.
Hope you can make a vid demonstrating an FA-50PH. Our country (The Philippines) recently acquired some units and was genuinely curious how they performed. Thank you for your daily content! Kudos @GrowlingSidewinder much love!
As far as I know the soviets had been playing with the idea of a variable sweep wing, along with several other countries. The concept however, was thought to be unsafe until NASA disproved this. This led to the creation of the F-111 and after this the MiG-23
An interesting note about the reverse engineering of the B-29. The B-29 in question had at some point before she found herself in Russian hands suffered battle damage that was repaired using sheet metal patches. The Russians had copied her so closely that the early production TU-4's included these "repair" patches.

The aircraft has a long and colorful history, and we're going to try to add to it today. Mainly by adding fire smoke and an impact at about 400 mph straight into the ground.
I watched a little doco once wherein it was said that the top speed of the MiG 23 was unknown because it would come apart before reaching it. Meaning, the plane would just keep giving as much speed as the pilot asked for until the wings wouldn't stay on. Sounds kind of nonsensical but there it is.
@@GrowlingSidewinder The Flogger can reach its max operational speed of M2,35 with the wings swept to 45 deg, so at full sweep of 72 deg it can go much faster than that, but it would suffer structural damage due to overheating.
