Yes and no. In terms of old mythologies, very much so. The stories functioned as morality plays and dividing them by traits was important to the purpose. Most modern stories however do not seek to make you a better person, they are just entertainment, and the good stories flow from the settings. Dwarves are strong, tough, and skilled/competent as almost a genetic condition. Combine that with loyalty, and dwarves are basically everything that men look for in other men. Interestingly enough, because women look for appearance and stature, both physically and socially, they find dwarves lacking. (Obviously these are all broad generalizations.)
Dwarfs represnet mostly positive aspects of masculinity with very few negative aspects of masculinity, while Orcs represent mostly negative aspects of masculinity with a few positive traits.
Just remembered how 10 or so years ago, at some Con cosplay contest, host looked down the venue and called: - Hey, girl in a green cape, where are you from?! - Vladikavkaz! - Yeah, can tell this much. I mean - what fandom? - Oh! Disc World! Terry Pratchett. - Come up here on stage. That was a short girl, probably 150cm with a round face, proper long axe in hand and respectable beard tucked under the belt. Crowd was ecstatic.
I think before comes a very hard discipline, dwarves relentlessly build themselves as tireless miners, warriors and skilled craftsmen. Only AFTER they've achieved mastery, they can flex by having fun and being intoxicated. I doubt a young inexperienced dwarf would be allowed to behave this way.
For me, the appeal of dwarves is that they don't do anything by half measures. If you're going to make something, make a masterpiece. If you're going to fight someone, fight to the death. If you're going to celebrate something, drink and feast and sing all through the night and into the next day. You'll never have a better friend (or a worse enemy) than a dwarf. And if you make friends with one, you make friends with all of them. Because if Glod Glodson says you're okay, then you're okay.
Even the dwarves that have a century long grudge against Gold can respect you because Glod is a dwarf and no dwarves make that kind of decision lightly, so must have earned it.
Like Epictetus once said, "Generally, then, if you would make anything a habit, do it : if you would not make it a habit, do not do it; but accustom yourself to do something else in place of it "

Loyalty, one's word is one's bond, the clan/kingdom/dwarfkind is more important than the individual, a "last stand" buying many others the time to flee or withdraw to a more defensible position is about the most honourable thing possible, dwarves don't luke gold or gems for it's beauty but for it's practical value, there's never a defense which can't be improved upon.
@notawitchr they indeed have aesthetic value, but for dwarves that's never the primary concern. Hence why you rarely see dwarven jewellery (purely meant to showcase aesthetics/wealth) but do see weapons/armour embossed with the above (making the weapons/armour look more impressive and/or allowing magical properties).
Gimly did tell Legolas that dwarves appreciate natural beauty of caverns and glistering gem clusters. They mine some and tend to the rest like gardeners tend to plants.
We love the Dwarfs because they are good, honest lads who don't hid who they are and are damn proud of it. Also, Beard and Ale are good selling points.
As a guy who absolutely hates facial hair, alcohol, the effects of alcohol, and loves being alone with no sense of belonging or community and absolutely no drive to create, dwarves are everything im not (except short) And despite me not personally enjoying some of their choices such as booze and hair, i freaking love that about them. ROCK AND STONE. I AM A DWARF AND IM DIGGING A HOLE.
You forgot our anthem: Diggy Diggy Hole Brothers of the mine rejoice! Swing, swing, swing with me Raise your pick and raise your voice! Sing, sing, sing with me Down and down into the deep Who knows what we'll find beneath? Diamonds, rubies, gold and more Hidden in the mountain store Born underground, suckled from a teat of stone Raised in the dark, the safety of our mountain home Skin made of iron, steel in our bones To dig and dig makes us free Come on brothers sing with me! Chorus I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole The sunlight will not reach this low Deep, deep in the mine Never seen the blue moon glow Dwarves won't fly so high Fill a glass and down some mead! Stuff your bellies at the feast! Stumble home and fall asleep Dreaming in our mountain keep Born underground, grown inside a rocky womb The earth is our cradle; the mountain shall become our tomb Face us on the battlefield; you will meet your doom We do not fear what lies beneath We can never dig too deep
Warhammer Dwarves are kindhearthed on the inside to. I recommend to read "Gotrek and Felix" books about adventures of Gotrek - a Dawi slayer and Felix Jaegar - his rememberer who is supposed to record Gotrek's death and vow for him, that he died in glory. Thier relation is very wholesome in my opinion.
Uuuuuuuh, i wouldn't call Gotrek a "wholesome" fella. He is definitely amicable when you get to become his friend like Felix did, and he is loyal to a fault, but man, his temper is like the shortest fuse on the largest gunpowder stash.
@notawitchr Gotrek and Felix books are one of the best Warhammer has to offer. I recommend to read them. Or listen to the audiobook, there are some on the TH-cam here.
Warhammer dwarfs tend to be way colder than any other dwarfs I've seen tho. I mean, Warhammer has that tendency of being 'overly grim' (I mean '40K' (warhammer's scifi counterpart) put the word 'grimdark' on the map) so dwarfs got the 'grim filter' too. The rare (somewhat) kind-hearted ones often are represented as outcasts or outsiders (Gotrek, or Bardin from Verminitde as well), while their society is built all around coldheartedness. The Warhammer universe just took the "unforgiving" cursor and turned it up to the sheer friggin' max. Yes, they still have some comradry left in 'em, but man, they are foremost extremely demanding both of themselves and of others (you do NOT want to disappoint a dwarf that excepts something out of you), hellbent on revenge whenever they are (even slightly) wronged, and filled with a LOT of bitterness due to their realms dwindling ever so slowly for thousands of years. It's almost funny actually, the more you learn about warhammer dwarfs, the more inhumane and insufferable (even to other dwarfs) they become. XD (But, on the other side, they are the stricktest about honor and the most resilient dwarfs I've seen as well, their sheer unwillingness to back down in front of destruction is their most redeeming (and impressive) feature imo.) I used to play dwarfs on warhammer tabletop as a teen and I read most of their books, I still love my proud dawi but yeah, they did not escape the "grim treatment" that's the trademark of their universe. ^^
@@nicolausg7058 Yeah, the best one are the original novels of William King. Nathan Long's novels are not so good. From Josh Reynolds I only read "The Serpent Queen" and the truth is that I enjoyed it a lot.

Geralt my boy, he liked spending his time with the dwarves - he even fought the angry mob just to save his dwarven firends form lynching to death. It was almost a thousand people and one witcher. The only one who stood against the massacre.
Dwarves in Witcher are essentially Jews. Look, great craftsman, good bankers, always their fault that Northern kingdoms can't win war properly, live in ghettos, known as greedy folk, hated by the nations of men for whatever reason, who are trigger happy when a small bearded man comes along

We also respect/like/aspire to Dwarves because they embody the 'Masculine creative'. They are builders, crafters, brewers, smiths, carvers, tamers and shapers... they take the raw stuff of nature, be it vital or inanimate, and MAKE.

one scene from the hobbit perfectly summarizes it for me, its the one when balin and thorin talk about bilbo deciding not to join the company, thorin then says to balin: "Loyalty, honor, a willing heart, i can ask no more than that", its what i try to aspire every day. And i see myself in their flaws too, im an artist but im a perfectionist, sometimes im too stubborn to really listen what someone is saying to me and its been always more easy for me to just lock myself inside my head.
If you're from the nordics there's also the whole aspect of dwarven symbolism being based a lot on the old cutlure from those parts, so that sort of adds another little bit of interest to it all...
In D&D, I've come up with one of the major Dwarven Clans being the inventors of gunpowder. They are Clan Firebelcher. And they're named that because of their first Patriarch, the Ol' Belcher. Let's just say fiddling around with sulfur and other bits and ends with ale was quite the spectacle for those around him.
Dwarves are my favorite doesn't matter if it's in fantasy or sci-fi. However Tolkiens dwarves remain my favorite because despite being considered 'gruff', they can be surprisingly gentle and poetic. They love music and take playing instruments correctly as serious as their stone and metal work, while playing instruments most people wouldn't expect like clarinets, viols and harps. And despite often being depicted as great weapon and armor smiths, one thing they also love making is toys. (which I just find so wholesome.)
@@notawitchr It was mentioned by Thorin when he told Bilbo what life was like before Smaug sacked Erebor. "Altogether those were good days for us, and the poorest of us had money to spend and to lend, and leisure to make beautiful things just for the fun of it, not to speak of the most marvelous and magical toys, the like of which is not to be found in the world now-a-days. So my grandfathers's halls became full of armours and jewels and carvings and cups, and the toy market of Dale was the wonder of the North."
For me Dwarves encompass the following: -Heavy Armour badass infantry -Reliance on tech rather then weak ass magic -Hates elves, good, bunch of leaf lovers -Industrious, stubborn but loyal
Technology, beardlings today got no respect for tradition. All these contraptions they're coming out with. If a dwarf was supposed to fly our beards would act as wings. Give me a good axe and crossbow.

It menaces with spikes of Adamantine. On the video and channel, there is a picture of a Dwarf with an axe striking down many Elves. The Elves are crying. The Dwarf is laughing.
Dwarves always have been, and will be, my favorite fantasy race. -They're tough, (often) grumpy, but loyal warriors, I'd rather have fighting by my side than against me. -They're also great craftsmen. Their creation may not be as... delicate as what, for example, elves, can create, but it has a ruggedeness, and it's made to last. -And las but not least, at least in my opinion, I appreciate they're love for good food and beer, ale or any stronger stuff.
A group of dwarves is called a tavern. Ay, they may not have one around them at all given times, but give em a week and a war, and they’ll have a fortress built around a tavern that was finished six days prior.
I think I am a bit more of an elf fan, wood or night elves in particular, but dwarves hold a special place in my heart! One of my first World of Warcraft characters was a dwarf hunter and I remember spending hours in Dun Morogh, Ironforge and the surrounding dwarven lands! Every time I log back on after years of absence I head over to Ironforge and it feels like I'm returning home!
Dun Morogh is particularly endearing. The cold outside vs the warm inside of the taverns or Ironforge itself created a very a cozy feeling. And beer roasted ribs, of course.
I'm glad that youtube recommended your channel to me last week; I'm really enjoying it. I like Dwarves are far and away my fantasy race, probably because I'm grumpy and built like a refrigerator!
my favorite thing about dwarf is that they are unstrusting but they also have a lot in common with humans so by the time a dwarf warms up to their human camarade, the frail humie is already dying of old age.
Dwarves definitely aren’t my personal preference but I always end up loving them even if I don’t play as one or their character isn’t my favorite. They’re always in the top 5 if not top 3 of every universe they’re in.
Beards Its the fucking beards I envy their fucking perfect beards I have a bald spot on my fucking chin and I can't grow a good beard I HAVE BEARD ENVY DAMNIT!!!!!!
If its centered, embrace it amigo. I started growing whiskers at 16, bare in the middle of my chin. Didn't care, rocked it anyhow. 20 years later it grew in. Wear them whiskers proudly
The beard envy is strong in me. My facial hair has filled in so slowly. Started with a few whiskers at 16. Almost 40 now and can only grow sideburns and a goatee. I have a few hairs on my cheeks and none on the sides of my jawline. But I still get new whiskers every now and then. I might be able to grow a full beard when I'm in my 60s.
top 10 reasons why dwarves are the superior fantasy race: 10 - invented guns 9 - make great beer 8 - stubborn and greedy but also brave and loyal 7 - masters of metallurgy and smithing 6 - female dwarves are capable, strong and stout as the males, true equality 5 - dangerous fighters and resistant to magic or poisons 4 - pay homage to their ancestors and love ther family/clan 3 - know everything about orcs, goblins and dragons 2 - great beards 1 - great beards
The biggest reason why I love dwarves is because of their dedication. In many, many depictions of dwarves they dedicate their lives to perfecting one thing. Be that smithing, fighting, brewing, singing, or some other craft. And that craft is something they can spend centuries honing and perfecting. It's just something that clicks for me.
Lord of the rings dwarves are advanced with technology, they aren't affraid to fight, they have a good economy, great attitude, idk, I thought I was the only one liking the dwarfs.
I like Tolkeins elves. Too many authors removed their, ahem, humanity and made them stereotypical snooty people. I always liked the Silmarillion for giving them more dimension.
@@amicableenmity9820 Totally agree! It's a real shame how the very idea of elves often is reduced to a high class society and gives the blue-collar guys an excuse to hate them. Tolkien would not like that...
One of the main appeals for me is the minig and smithing which ties into your craftsmanship point. I love the ideals of digging your way through stone, collecting metals and ores to then smelt and smith into all manners of awesome tools, weapons, and other things. Excellent video, great job on it!
Sadly true. Most women have a particular hard time with the concept of honor too. They are completely baffled at the notion that we would hold honor so high as to be willing to risk dying over it. That some lines cannot be crossed and go unpunished. Its an alien concept to all but a tiny few women.
Everyone knows that Dwarves are heavily inspired by Vikings, but thing I love about them is how much they remind me of our ancestral roots here, maybe even more than of Vikings. Lower and middle class of nobility in most of eastern Europe was just like dwarves, very fierce and prideful. They loved good drink and song, but they also had short temper and would often brawl or challenge each other to various sorts of competitions (for example hunting a big game, to see who has more fierce hound, or in extreme cases even to duel). Many of them struggled between loyalty and greed, but more noble ones were able to choose what is right when the right time came. I believe that everyone is able to find something of a dwarf in their ancestors as well as in themselves.
My love for dwarves goes deep back to when I was but a child. I saw the Halls of Erebor in the game BFME2, I thought it was the coolest. And just how the dwarves carried themselves and fought, I saw the way they crafted and carved mountains into homes - the hardwork being something I wished to achieve. And later on when I got into Warhammer Fantasy, the Dawi's lines of armored and unyielding warriors was just the coolest. And then bring in the Gotrek and Felix books giving me a look into the Slayers and showing the oaths they took to right the wrong(s) they committed in the past. I've just always related to and loved dwarves, and my friends and chick don't get why I have such a die hard love for the short bastards!
Personally i love the aspect of dwarves usually delving back into the lost cities of old and firing up the ancient forges again. Its like the present day dwarves have the efforts of many generations on thier shoulders as they attempt to reclaim thier home.
Dwarfs are just so charismatic and warm, and i think it’s because they balance so many cool traits. They’re wise enough to earn respect, but they use that wisdom for sharp wit or even blunt humor, which somehow makes them even more lovable. They’re also brave to the point where their courage might overshadow their common sense, but that’s what makes them so dependable... you know they’ll always have your back. What i really love is how they’re rough around the edges but still manage to be so likable. it reminds me a lot of the Irish people. You know how some people can be total jerks but still have that spark of charm that makes you forgive them? Dwarfs are like that. they’ve got that “devilish charm” that makes even their gruffness feel endearing. Plus, they know how to have a good time. They’re all about celebrating life-drinking, singing, storytelling and they’re terrible at staying cold or indifferent. You just feel their warmth and passion in everything they do. They’re proud of who they are, they don’t fake anything, and they’re always full of life. That’s why men respect them, and honestly, why everyone loves/respects them or atleast me.
A few things make me love them - 1: funny short man drink fight mine haha. 2: at least in the hobbit and LotR I liked their resistance, mentally speaking specifically. Especially in the Hobbit we see in their songs how much they have lost and how it weighs on them but they still go on to drink, joke, and make merry. 3: The fantasy of a strong and pure sense of community and belonging and purpose within that community is a very appealing fantasy in the modern day. 4: I like playing tanky lads and dwarves are tanky lads. Also hammers and axes are fun.
#2 is very very much a guy thing. I am reminded of a book I read by a bouncer. He and his buddy were laughing uncontrollably at something funny a recently fallen friend had done. When his girlfriend wandered by and asked why they were laughing he told her, "to keep from crying" then they both laughed even harder. I get it. Plus you never show weakness in front of a woman. It will be used against you. I therefore question the reason and good sense of anyone who says women and men are the same
I discovered your channel just today with your recommended dwarven games. I love dwarves because they kinda are the opposite of who I am: easily triggered, mistrustful of others, but also sincere about their feelings and proud about themselves and their crafts... something I lack. Every day I try to improve myself with the pros of being a dwarf by expressing my feelings and not hiding them from others, and also by being proud of the tiny accomplishments I make. That's positive masculinity to ya! Also, it is true that dwarves like us need our Legolas. I found mine 8 years ago and that pointy ear leaf lover changed my life like no one ever did
What i like most about Dwarves is their loyalty. It can be hard to earn their trust sometimes, but when you do, a Dwarf will have your back through hell or high water. You can always trust a Dwarf.
Also Dwarves have this underdog aspects. Unlike elvs, they arent better in everything then humans but slightly inferior due to their small size, but this never stops them.
True about underdogs. The second part not true - dwarves are better than humans in all aspects except maybe for the hight and the speed of breeding. You're thinking gnomes)))
@notawitchr Really? In what aspects are dwarves better then human besides craftsmanship and longlevity? I was thinking about Gimli who was always out of breath, when chasing the Urukhai that kidnapped merry and pippin, or needed to be tossed by Aragon at Helms deep because he coulnd jump far enough etc.
1. Dwarves are less susceptible to evil - 7 rings did not turn them into Sauron's lackeys. 2. Dwarves are more sturdy and resilient, can withstand more hardships and have higher constitution bonuses)) 3. Dwarves have better beards ))) 4. You mentioned yourself their longevity and craftsmanship (which is two things) 5. Dwarves in Middle-earth were created first. Earlier than any other race, even elves.
This is true. This is where their famous stubbornness comes in. Dwarves will not give up, but will fight to the end. No matter what. Dwarves are not a faction, they're a force of nature as hard and unyielding as the stone they hew.
I imagine a scenario where treebeard met Gimli. Did the dwarves will like him? because treebeard is grumpy, has longbeards, and like rock and stone too! Like a dwarves.
Best steriotype of dwarves comes from the game Overlord (angry beer-soaked beards with legs) where the dwarves invented beer-plumming. Instead of water pipes, they have pipelines going from their brewery to their homes. Good life
Hey, dwarves are the smart ones. Everyone else builds above ground where you have to deal with weather. Unless you use a boat load of magic you need furs in winter to keep from freezing, and places to cool down in summer to keep from overheating. Meanwhile, your average dwarven underground house is a constant 70F. I suspect the halflings learned the advantages of underground homes by talking to a passing dwarf.
one important thing is that dwarves are easy to read. if a dwarf is angry, you'll know he's angry. if a dwarf is happy, you'll know he's happy. if a dwarf thinks your joke is funny, he'll laugh.

If you're going to celebrate something, drink and feast and sing all through the night and into the next day. You'll never have a better friend (or a worse enemy) than a dwarf. And if you make friends with one, you make friends with all of them. Because if Glod Glodson says you're okay, then you're okay.
Well said!
Even the dwarves that have a century long grudge against Gold can respect you because Glod is a dwarf and no dwarves make that kind of decision lightly, so must have earned it.
Like Epictetus once said, "Generally, then, if you would make anything a habit, do it : if you would not make it a habit, do not do it; but accustom yourself to do something else in place of it "
I got my dad into deep rock galactic by saying "space dwarves" and now I play it with him and my brother every weekend and I'm currently on the path to get him into the leagues of votann

@@jeroenimus7528 i agree, but let's admit that gold and gems do have aesthetic value. )))

You forgot our anthem: Diggy Diggy Hole
Brothers of the mine rejoice!
Swing, swing, swing with me
Raise your pick and raise your voice!
Sing, sing, sing with me
Down and down into the deep
Who knows what we'll find beneath?
Diamonds, rubies, gold and more
Hidden in the mountain store
Born underground, suckled from a teat of stone
Raised in the dark, the safety of our mountain home
Skin made of iron, steel in our bones
To dig and dig makes us free
Come on brothers sing with me!
Chorus
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole
I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole
Diggy diggy hole, digging a hole
The sunlight will not reach this low
Deep, deep in the mine
Never seen the blue moon glow
Dwarves won't fly so high
Fill a glass and down some mead!
Stuff your bellies at the feast!
Stumble home and fall asleep
Dreaming in our mountain keep
Born underground, grown inside a rocky womb
The earth is our cradle; the mountain shall become our tomb
Face us on the battlefield; you will meet your doom
We do not fear what lies beneath
We can never dig too deep

I haven't read a lot of Warhammer books - basically only Skarsnik and started some others. Not all of them are good, sadly.

Rock and stone, the beautiful sound of teamwork!
Tolkien's dwarves are the best. But where have you heard/read about their toy-making? Can't remember.
For me Dwarves encompass the following:
-Heavy Armour badass infantry
-Reliance on tech rather then weak ass magic
-Hates elves, good, bunch of leaf lovers
-Industrious, stubborn but loyal
3 out of 4 - agree.

They are all of that indeed!
I have also taken the dwarf pill, I craft, I fight, I feast, and I never forget when I'm slighted.

2. Dwarves are more sturdy and resilient, can withstand more hardships and have higher constitution bonuses))
3. Dwarves have better beards )))
4. You mentioned yourself their longevity and craftsmanship (which is two things)
5. Dwarves in Middle-earth were created first. Earlier than any other race, even elves.
@@notawitchr thanks
This is true. This is where their famous stubbornness comes in. Dwarves will not give up, but will fight to the end. No matter what. Dwarves are not a faction, they're a force of nature as hard and unyielding as the stone they hew.
I imagine a scenario where treebeard met Gimli.
Did the dwarves will like him?
because treebeard is grumpy, has longbeards, and like rock and stone too! Like a dwarves.
😊Treebeard is a tree - so dwarves would be cautious of him)))
Well, as long as treebears offer one of those drinks mentioned in the books, they'll be best friends.
Best steriotype of dwarves comes from the game Overlord (angry beer-soaked beards with legs) where the dwarves invented beer-plumming. Instead of water pipes, they have pipelines going from their brewery to their homes.
Good life
Sounds pretty cool.
You forgot an important point: the music. Dwarven Forge, When the Hammer Falls, Song of Hammerdeep, Diggy Diggy Hole, it all epic as hell.
Great video I was having some back pain and now I’m smiling.
This is honestly all i ever wanted 😀😀😀
Good job brother. From anything i can think of, maybe we can ad that Dwarves carve out their own home in a hardships of cold mountains.
Dwarves can carve out a home practically anywhere. They PREFER mountains, because there are no other people there )))
Hey, dwarves are the smart ones.
4:33 This one is going in the Big Book for sure 👆
Dwarves and Elves are awesome in my opinion. The masculine urge to swing axes and shoot bows is too intense.
And combining ranged troops with close-quarters melee troops is just practical.
@notawitchr Truly.
one important thing is that dwarves are easy to read.
if a dwarf is angry, you'll know he's angry.
if a dwarf is happy, you'll know he's happy.
if a dwarf thinks your joke is funny, he'll laugh.
Strong in friendship the fiercest of foes. Hearty workers capable of great things. What isn’t there to like about them.
So true!
You`re made my day, my dude. ROCK`N`STONE!
Thanks, dude!
