  • Most Android phones have an SD card slot, which allows users to add extra storage space to their device. But Apple has never brought the feature to iPhones, and there are some good reasons why. Starting with the user experience.

    As an iOS and Android user I can say I've never found it "complicated" buying an SDCard, never experienced any reliability issues and noticed no speed differences opening a video on my Android phone or a video on my iPhone. iPhones have their place but its a bit like comparing a Speak and Spell (iPhone) with a Linux server (Android). Yes if you find things "complicated" you are probably better off with an iPhone, but if you want the freedom to do what you want with *YOUR* phone, then Android is the way to go.

    These last couple of Apple Explained videos - SD card and no dedicated back button - have been really interesting videos. I mean sure Apple likes to control seemingly every little detail, we've known that for years, but Apple must really not think much of their user base at best or that they're suckers and idiots at worst.
    No SD card because the user can't help themselves to make a decision about what memory size they think they'll need? Have you tried buying an iPhone? Users can have trouble deciding what memory size they'd think they'd need with the built in memory just as easily as an SD card. SD cards have a limited number of cycles? So Apple develops an SD monitor to let the user know, your SD card is pretty old so you should consider replacing it before it fails and you lose all your stuff. SD cards are slower than internal memory? Ah, okay, maybe, I don't know and if they are we're talking what(?) nanoseconds or something?
    Android thinks more of their users than Apple does. That's evident once again. Memory is cheap, Apple makes a killing (and so do Android manufacturers who've ditched the SD card) and that's why Apple doesn't support the SD card - revenue. It's a cheap and easy way to bolster your memory, you set it once on the app as to where to store particular things and you're done. It's quick and easy to move entire caches of files from device to device, I know because I easily moved my music from an old Android device to a new when I switched phones not to long ago.
    Apple really must think they're users are stupid idiots who can't think for themselves...

    You also missed the fact that apps and operating systems get larger over time, so if you are using an older model without expandable storage, you will have to delete things and will feel pressure to buy a new phone. The card slot gives Android users the ability to expand their storage as needed, and thus allow their phones to last longer.

    As a devout Samsung /Android user, I feel this video highlights the inconveniences of having an SD card. Transferring your phone? Move all your photos and stuff to the SD. Not slow at all. Have a 2GB video you want to watch? No lag on opening or viewing the file.
    For the longest time, I feel Apple didn't want expanded storage because they wanted to control cost. You want bigger storage? Buy the more expensive model.
    And that's just the storage issuse with apple vs Samsung. There are many more differences, most coming down to user freedom and accessibility to the phone.
    But I get it that most Apple users enjoy the simplicity of their apple product, I just enjoy having more freedom and access over a device I paid for.

    I do think that SD cards are convenient. Especially because they are very inexpensive these days. For example, I got a 400GB card from Sandisk during the black Friday sales two years ago for just 30€.
    And if you get a new device you can also be sure that any SD card you get is going to work fine. You just have to be cautious about the quality of the card which can usually be solved by getting one from a reputable brand and a reputable seller so you don't get a fake card.
    And I don't even find it inconvenient to manage my storage. Internal storage is for apps, external storage is for media like photos and videos. Done.
    The only issue I see is speed. Because compared to modern internal storage micro SD cards are very slow. In certain recording modes you can't even use them and the phone will record to internal memory instead.
    Flash memory has also become inexpensive though. The upgrade from 128gb to 256gb doesn't add whole lot to the price these days. And I think the improved speed and reliability compared to an SD card is worth the extra cost.
    But still having the option to use one would be better than not being able to use one at all.

      So i agree sd cards in today’s market is spectacular and while yes most brands are a bit pricey you can definitely find cheaper ones. However apples experience is seamless it works well too well to be exact. Apple built their software where you don’t experience too much write on your internal storage this why your able to last your storage longer then most cheaper androids with the same storage size. And then theres iCloud and while its monthly the price is actually reasonable and worth it because 1. With sd cards you have to manually store data and choose what to store because 2. not everything will get stored into an sd card, iOS iCloud when you back up your iPhone ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING gets stored into iCloud and restore your backup you get absolutely everything (its impressive you get all your settings, wallpapers, photos, and app data so you don’t have to double sign into each app.) 3. And if you need non cloud base storage i recommend getting a hard drive storage where you can get 1tb of storage for up to 100$ where sd card lack because after 500gb then they start getting pricer

  • @maggimix2
    @maggimix2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    iCloud storage requires an internet connection and is not that fast.
    However, the sd card does not use any internet connection to use it.
    But the advantage of icloud storage is that you can access it on your ipad or mac computer.
    You can also have google drive or dropbox.

    Never had any compatibility issues with any SD card or storage device and I have a 123GB SD card in it now that has been working since I got it when I got the phone back in 2019.
    Never had the SD card fail and I have actually used it with other Android before.
    It has always been fast and very very reliable!
    But maybe I am just lucky I don’t know.

    And only loads like once when I open it after that I can go through the vid just fine no problem at high speed.

    I have an idea on how they could make it work. They could make it so there’s another variant of iPhone that has SD card capability, more expensive and they could make it so the user could choose a default storage area for applications and such but not the operating system and the device attempts to warn The user when their SD card is gonna fail like how it does with SIM cards. And if device storage fills up it automatically transfers new things over to the SD card or maybe some large things during sleep mode while it is plugged in thanks to device on board learning it knows what you use the most and what it can throw onto the SD card. Like the most used app stays on the device storage but the most unused app if it takes a lot of storage gets transferred over to the SD card during the charge routine that the device learns to know when you aren’t using it similar to screen time tracking on and off time. This could be implemented into iOS 16 with all current devices that will support it but need a accessory.

    1:15 "Amount of storage their device supports."
    With PRECIOUS few exceptions, an SDXC-compatible device will accept any SDXC-compatible card.
    The "Up to XX GB" is just the largest size at the time so they couldn't claim that a 1TB card would work when only 128GB card existed (for example.)
    The storage speed might apply to extremely high-bitrate recording.
    SSDs and internal the NVME storage used on iPhones and UFS on Android also has a limited number of write cycles.
    These write cycles (of internal and SD) GREATLY exceed the amount 99.999% of users will ever go through.
    The only valuable/relevant piece of information in this is at 1:50.

    Tbh, it's a LOT easier for me to upgrade phones with an SD Card. All of my SD card data can just be unplugged from one phone and plugged into the new one without having to pay for iCloud to sync over 100GB and waiting for the download to finish eventually; everything's there instantly and without any delay. And if I decide that I want a new SD Card for the new phone, it's really easy to clone an SD Card (just drag and drop the files between the devices using my desktop and let it sit for a few minutes). Of course, that step is always completely optional. Most everything on the internal can either be dragged from the old phone and dropped into the new one, but the majority of it will sync automatically.

Also, might not work out so well if you leave something running in the background while accessing SD card content with the screen locked and you unplug the OTG reader out of habit and have that "oh crap" moment as you realize your SD card's filesystem might be bricked now. I suspect it goes back to iPods and iTunes. When they were trying to negotiate contracts that would let them store music on a device, there was no provision to have removable storage, so you couldn’t take that memory card, put it in your friend’s computer, and give them a copy of all your songs (and movies). Since the iPhone follows the same contracts, there’s no removable storage there, either.

    1:55 "things like a larger battery" the standard iPhone 13 has ~2000mAh less than even cheapo crappy Android phones with a price tag not much more than an Apple phone... Dongle (3240 vs 5000). Now yes, Apple does a lot with that limited battery thanks to optimized software but the point still stands, the battery's tiny by comparison.

    • @Onaterdem
      @Onaterdem 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely what I was gonna say. The flagship Apple device has a SIGNIFICANTLY smaller battery every year compared to the flagship Samsung device. Larger bezels, smaller camera module, same size or smaller CPU (more effective).

    you can buy an external sd card reader for $10-20 depending on brand and what-not. Which means technically you can use a micro sd card with an iPhone. You just have to deal with the inconvenience of having to use an adapter and a 3rd party app.

    These days sdxc cards are available.
    There is more writing speed on them.
    There is no compulsion to use sd card if slot is given.
    This is purely marketing strategies of manufacturers of not providing slot.
    Instead they offer 2-300 bucks more for larger storages.
    Apple started and remaining started following it.

    Some of these stuff about how inconvenient sd cards could possibly be might be true, but that alone isn't a good reason to not give users the possibility to use it... I'd rather have the option and not need to use it, than not having it at all... Apple probably cares much more about making users pay for iCloud storage than they care about users having an inconvenient experience with slow reading speeds or the user having to spend 2 minutes of their day choosing whether they want to stote stuff on internal storage or sd card.

  • @GaryBeltz

    One thing I'd like to see a video of is an explanation why there is no audible low battery alarm on iOS devices? You ave to unlock your phone to get the 20% and 10% low battery notifications. The only time you get a noise is while on a call. That is one of the few things Android has a leg up on Apple. The low battery alarm goes off at 15% and 5% whether you touch the phone or not.

    • @achaffer1237
      @achaffer1237 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only reason they have that is because android phones are absolutely terrible at holding a charge when the display is off. iPhones do a great job at holing a charge when sleeping, so there wouldn’t be a point in them having an low battery alarm when the phone is off.

    • @pewnit
      @pewnit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, notifications in general are more in your face than on iOS. It really doesn't matter what notification it is, unless you set it to a lower priority, the icon will show up. There's also a lot of cool things you can do with persistent notifications like LastPass's notification that lets me auto fill in legacy apps which is great for compatibility!

      @Jadel Labradoodle251 No, I think you’re the wrong one here. The Galaxy Note series has good standby battery life for an Android. The key phrase there is “for an Android”. Even if you’re telling the truth and it only loses 10-12% of battery per day in standby mode, the iPhone still obliterates it, as it sometimes won’t even lose 1% after 24 hours of standby.

    Because its better for them to sell a more expensive model of the same iPhone with more storage than let people buy a 64go version and add more with an SD card which Apple wouldn't earn money from or even better, push people toward iCloud. User Experience my ass
    Edit : What do you mean shopping for an SD card is complicated ? If you don't know how to use your phone in the most basic way you might just buy a $20 phone off of amazon and put your sim in it. There's nothing complicated about knowing how much your device supports and buy a matching SD card, you're making things up.
    It really feels like you're praising Apple too much recently, you should rename your channel Apple Ads or something
    Even back then when I owned an Android, all of those kinda things were explicit enough to be understood, the iPhone is a really great phone, but you need to see the bad things of it and not just praise it for everything and justify every bad things with this kind of ridiculous statements, this is not how products evolve. Tell Apple their bad things are good and you'll eat shit forever
    Love your channel, hope it gets better next time.

    These are good reasons. Though the main reason is because it saves them money, and they can make more money by upselling an iphone that has more onboard memory. I still wish Apple let you put in an SD card though. As when buying a subsidized phone from the carrier, they generally only get the model with the lowest amount of memory.

    This is so true. It was nice to have the extra storage on my old Android phones back in the day, but such a pain in the rear with the fragmentation. Nowadays since things are mostly cloud-based, I feel that there is less of a need for SD cards. About the only thing that takes up physical room on my iPhone are the green bubble texts and my apps, everything else has data stored in the cloud (Google, iCloud, etc.)

    If you do your research you can have a pretty seamless experience between micro SD and your smartphone. I've had Android phones for many years and a performing micro SD could play 4k videos from my gallery without performance issues. Now that I have an iphone I use Icloud which is pretty much why I think apple doesn't have microSD slot in their phones. Why would I pay a fee every month for Icloud if I can double my storage with a one time (and not even much expensive) purchase?
