Why Your iPhone Alarm Isn't Going Off

- If your iPhone’s alarm hasn’t been waking you up lately, you’re not alone. Users across the internet have complained of oversleeping. Questioning whether their alarm went off at all. And now we know, it likely didn’t. Since Apple recently made a statement admitting to a bug that may silence your iPhone’s alarm. And the reason why could be found in the past. Since this isn’t the first time iPhone alarms have failed.

So you're saying it's been there for multiple iOS versions without fixing the bug? That's so odd. Apple is sometimes so unaware.

This is why I use a traditional older alarm that a keep in my bathroom. It's loud as hell so I actually have to physically get out of bed to turn it off. Having it on my phone makes it too easy for me to give in to temptation and hit snooze over and over.
and here I was thinking I was waking up turning it off and not even seeing it 🤣
The bug has nothing to do with the Attention Awareness setting, which has been a setting for years now (do turn it off though as it does lower the volume of the alarm clock considerably if you look at the screen while the alarm goes off!). I do happen to know what the issue is though:
This bug even occurs if you have Attention Awareness turned off and occurs **whenever you set multiple alarms**, basically if you let the initial alarm ring and then don't press the Snooze button before the second alarm starts, that second alarm and any one past that will not make a sound whenever you finally hit the snooze button for the first one. It has happened for many months now and it has taken me months to figure it out because I'm always half asleep when it happens, I put in a ticket with Apple about a month or two about it though, good to hear they're working on it
This has failed for me so many times

Bro like wow, i have been experiencing this since like half a year now, always getting late for classes due to this thing, it keeps on vibrating but doesn't even play a bit of sound. This thing just hurts man!
Quickest I’ve been here, btw can you talk about IOS 17.5 where it can bring back deleted photos and videos
17.5.1 is now out to apparently fix the photos bug
What??? Tell me more
They just fixed this today. Brandon Butch on TH-cam made a video about it
@@caroline_catbridges_kitty5384 Ik abt the update (I already updated) but I was talking more specifically about how and why it happened
i reccomend turning your volume+ringer up all the way and switching ur silent switch off before sleeping so it will be loud enough
This is why I’ve also got 2 ‘HomePod mini’ speakers (as stereo, idk if that even matters, at this point) at head height left and right of my bed. They’ve been working great.
imagine getting fired because of this
I actually got fired because of this bug back in 2018..🫠
Kudos to apple
Just had this problem earlier, now i know why. Thanks Greg
I did have this issue when i was in UK recently when I live in the US. It was odd because it went off before but not the one day when i really needed it to.
This legit happened to me two weeks ago and my mom said it was an excuse so I showed her a bunch of articles and videos, and I even proved to her
Does it happen on Apple Watch too? Cause I use my Apple Watch as an alarm clock and have been doing so for years and not once have I encountered anything similar.
I was so pissed. This is now common
I am not alone!!!
This is why I use Alarmy. You get lots of customization on the app, and I have never had a bug where it didn’t wake me up (except for when Apple changed some policies, then it needed to update)
My alarms seem to go off like clockwork during waking hours, but the last few months (at least) I’ve been oversleeping so much that I’ve had to rely on family members, who I know are awake early, to call me on mornings I absolutely have to be awake by a certain early time. I thought it was due to my low ringer volume, so I turned on the “change [ringtone and alerts] volume with buttons” setting so I can quickly crank the system volume before I go to sleep, but even that didn’t seem to work. I chalked it up to turning the alarm off on my watch, either unknowingly or accidentally when I meant to snooze it, so I turned clock notifications off on my watch so I can’t accidentally brush the watch face and turn the alarm off or whatever was happening. When that still didn’t help, I thought for sure I was turning it off in my sleep, maybe fully asleep and turning it off or accidentally hitting ‘cancel’ when I meant to snooze it, so I set my phone out of reach of my bed. When that still did nothing, I considered it was maybe a bug with conflicting alarms, like one alarm going off and overlapping with the next alarm and the two canceling each other out, so I made a concerted effort to space alarms out to go off within the nine min snooze and outside of the nine min snooze to prevent two or more alarms from going off at the same time and still nothing…
Lmao imagine Steve screaming about this bug at the office. The unholy wall punches down the entire hallway to the alarm clock team department with a foot print on the door and the doorframe just snapped
that explains why sometimes my alarm just wouldn't go off at all, but when iOS 16.2 happened all alarm related bugs appeared to be fixed and that was the time that I had decided to stop updating my phone because I really didn't feel like letting apple change things that didn't need to be changed, so I did and have been on 16.2 ever since, but even with the insecurities and possible slow downs this would cause, I still find this the better path against letting it update and possibly creating more problems than they solve, the later features they add aren't really that exciting anyways so for me, it makes sense to take this path
Thank you for this video, i feel less alone now with people having the same issue as i do.
Whenever i had an appointment in the next morning, i used to put a single alarm but it didn’t go off, resulting in not waking up on time
So now i have to put several alarms with a 5 minutes interval in order to wake up right on time, i hope that Apple with fix this issue!
I have an ancient phone with an outdated iOS version. I see this as an absolute win for once.
As I do for having other devices with alarms, including my Neo Geo Pocket, Pokémon Mini, 3DS with Sleep Clock app and PSP with Talkman! (Talkman is a language translator app that also has a metric calculator and alarm clock!)
Decided to buy a sunrise light alarm because of this. I like the building alarm sound on the iPhone but it was not working reliably! Love my new standalone alarm tho!
Thanks for informing us cause I missed class multiple times because of missing my alarm lol
Thank you for another excellent video!
I knew something was up. I use bedtime alarm and sometimes it never goes off. Been having this happen for quite awhile now and it made me late to work several times. I now run the bedtime alarm and a secondary normal alarm incase bedtime fails. I also turned off the feature that stops the alarm when you raise your phone.
Can’t believe this is still an issue all these years later.
This is insane. I'm using a Samsung phone and have never had alarm issues. I am considering switching to the Apple ecosystem because I like their "it just works" methodology. I prefer the inbuilt apps provided by the manufacturer/company over third-party apps. The fact that Samsung has their act together but a trillion-dollar company like Apple doesn't is absurd to me.
There used to be a bug (at least I hope it wasn't intentional) where your alarms wouldn't go off if your iPhone updated. I personally still don't risk it and have updates set to manual instead of automatic.
That brings up another can of worms. The phone NOT updating when you have it set to update automatically.
I’m expecting a similar issue with my recurring alarm. What are some reputable third party apps I can use? I’m Andrew.
I think it is issues with the attention aware thing as mentioned. In my case sometimes I'd be sleeping with it on its side overnight and it could be potentially pointing at my face and I think when the alarm went off, it saw my face and silenced itself.
Funny, bc i set the recurring alarms with Health and Sleep Focus, and single use alarms too, and never had an issue on my 15 Pro running the latest Dev Beta (now updated to 17.5.1 as of today, but there might be a Beta tomorrow on the usual Apple Tuesday release cycle).
Also experiencing a volume issue and some alarms not going off, that explains a lot! 😣
For many years now have multiple alarms . Basic digital timers even mechanical twist spring cooking alarm .
Please make a video how apple made the day / night time changing photos from the iMac / MacBook! Are they real pictures shot in the morning, afternoon and night? Because the camera didn't move at all.
i know that this bug has been going on at least since winter season last year
2:10 it is/most likely the attention aware "feature" because when i turned it off my alarms would wake me up.
Haven’t had this issue 🤘🏾
THANK YOU. Also, why is it so complicated to program an alarm app? I'm not a programmer but I guess it's easy to program "if time is 6:00 phone goes beep beep"
Thank you so much!
I’m using an old iPhone 5 on iOS 6 for an alarm. I set it across my bedroom, so I also have to fully get up to turn the alarm off. Never had an issue for a year
My alarm does always go off but for a few days in a row it didn't wake me up because it was silenced. It wasn't even silenced by the silence switch but in the sounds thingy in settings I had 'change with buttons' on so instead of lowering my volume it lowered my notification sound volume. Even off silent it wouldn't make noise but then I turned off the setting and turned my sound back up. That did fix it but I think it's stupid to even have that feature.
Is this an issue with sleep mode alarm too? Or just regular alarm?
Thank You for this! I really thought I was in deep sleep often so I didn't hear it.
Do you know what versions of iOS are affected by the bug?
Yeah this happens to me every couple of years there is a period where the alarm just does make any sound/vibration at all. And even hours later there aren’t any notification or call sounds. After a couple of weeks of it sometimes happening it magically vanishes and everything works again.
When they do fix it they should add an alarm ringer besides the regular phone ringer, why do they have to be the same volume? Android has had this for years I doubt it will come to the iPhone which is so frustrating.
Yep had this issue like a month ago
⏰ my alarm has been working fine. 😅 I have noticed though that in the late evening sometimes notifications 📢 won’t sound, even though I do NOT have a don’t disturb set.
I thought I was getting used to my alarm sound again. This is making me question if I was “getting use” to the sound the first time now
Hasn’t this issue already been fixed?
I bought two twin-bell alarm clocks, they work like a charm.
I remember the jan 2 2011 one very clearly!!
At least for me, I'm definitely affected by the attention aware, disabled it and my alarm works properly now (or i should say, it doesn't turn near to silent after the first few rings)
when i tell you my alarm went off when i saw the notification for this video! talk about perfect timing...
This happened to me twice and made me very late for work. I have owned iPhones since 2008 and this had never happened before. I now use a backup physical alarm clock and will forever have trust issues with my phones alarm!
Hey Greg, just an FYI, Daylight Saving Time is not called “Savings” Time. There is no S on the end. Hope that helps for future vids!
Can't wait for the next update to introduce a bug that disables phone calls...
I don't rely on phone alarms I mainly use a display alarm and I test it before I go to bed.
Make sure the volume is way the way up (to the max if necessary.)
Set the alarm when getting ready for bed, Washing face, brushing teeth, etc. and listen when the alarm goes on.
I've been having (and complaining about) this problem since downloading iOS 17 when it first released. pretty sure it only happened when using standby mode. It hasn't been a problem lately but idk when exactly it stopped. I'm on version 17.4.1 currently
Daylight Saving! Time
Ever since I bought Apple Watch 9, the alarm goes off on the watch but not on the phone. Is this normal or did I messed up some settings?
This has happened to me a couple times and substantially worsened my sleep because I’m always afraid that this time is going to be the .1% of times when it doesn’t work.
Samsung phones had this exact same issue a couple years ago from my experience which they eventually fixed, and it's suprising iphones are also getting this bug now. Alarms seem like such a simple fearure 😅
I added a billion automations to make my volume max and then i see this
This has happened to me along with the speaker phone audio going silent after switching between applications while on the phone.
Bro, I’ve just used the sleep schedule feature in the health app and this has never been a problem for me??
Thank GOODNESS for Alarmy
One more reason for me to not switch to iPhone
Does the Apple Watch have the same issue?
Not sure but Homepod sure does. Alarm went off but checked the settings and that alarm was off. Also think it hasn’t been going off
Thankfully I haven’t had the issue lately but I would legit set up multiple alarms on my iPhone and android tablet for redundancy sake
When will the issue be fixed?
Ahhh
I had this last week!

“idk”
Thanks for the informative video!
I’m missing calls on my 15 pro max. Lock Screen shows a missed call but nothing rang. No focus modes, DND off, ringer on
This literally happened to me this morning. My phone’s alarm never went off, but when I checked it was still on. My dad woke me up 15 minutes later.
Luckily I have never experienced this problem with my iPhone.
luckily you have not experienced this problem with your iphone YET.
luckily i cant ever experience this, since i switched from iphone to the dark side aka android
I've had this issue since 2015. There will be times it's alarm is on the alarm screen, but no noise is coming from the iPhone. Been a thing for almost 10 years!
This is so relatable not gonna lie
Had an iPhone the entire time I was in the military. So many times I almost got bad paperwork due to a bug.
Switched to android (they had become way more popular and i was curious) after leaving and now I'm praised for perfect attendance
Same problem
Me: Siri wake me up at 6
Siri: sure
Me: Siri what’s my next alarm?
Siri: trust me bro
I was wondering why this started happening this year. The alarm wouldn’t “sound” smh
Also if I want to have a song from Apple Music as my alarm song, it just plays the standard alarm sound instead of the song
I haven't had that experience, but maybe I should start using my iPhone 6S as an alarm.
For years my iPhone would randomly not wake me up. I’ve woken up 2 hours later with the alert still on screen that an alarm is actively going off but no sound and no vibration. Thought maybe I was just so so tired that I slept through the noise and it timed out. Partly why I wear my Apple Watch overnight, i haven’t had it miss yet and monkey brain like seeing colorful sleep tracking bars. But iOS has been infuriating me lately so I’m back on android. Can’t use Apple Watch with it and last galaxy watch I used felt like a separate device entirely unconnected to the phone, that was still in beta testing phase.
The funniest part about it is apple has stated the reason they didn’t put calculator and weather apps on iPad is because they want to “make it great” When they can’t even figure out the clock properly.
I usually use the HomePod alarms at full volume. There’s no sleeping though that especially when the damn HomePod can’t hear you so you either have to yell or get up to silence
I can confirm that I have had this issue and every time it happens I have found my notifications volume turned down, and it did that on its own. I simply check the volume every night before bed now.
Yep. I moved to a 3rd party alarm app + Alexa for months now. Been burned too many times by the Apple alarms.
I missed my job interview & may not get this job i’ve been hoping for because of this bug
Hope you get it.
I heard this in the news and this didn't happen to me at all! (I'm iPhone 11) I'm an audio nerd and I found it it's the bug that happens from the face ID attention awareness feature (that you need to disable) where it lowers the sound output by 20 decibels.
I have always had trouble relying on iPhone alarms since I got my very first iPhone 4 years ago-- the iPhone SE 2
I would wake up to a silent alarm going off hours too late
