Racing was better when manufacturers had to make homologation vehicles. The fact that you can actually buy a Porsche 911 GT1 and drive it on the streets is too fucking cool.
Technically no... The Ferrari 333SP (the "SP" stands for "Sports Prototype") was a WSC (World Sports Car) that was basically the equivalent of an LMP car like the Audi R8... The Porsche was a GT1 car... But for this race, they were basically in the same class without technically being in the same class. If that makes sense. This was the first Petit Le Mans race ever and the first American Le Mans Series race ever, so they pretty much just lumped the GT1 cars like the Porsche and Panoz into a top class of cars that included the open top WSC cars because they were pretty much equal. GT1 cars were heavier but had more power. WSC cars were lighter and less power but they were roughly equal to the GT1 cars.
@@FriendlyCroock I know. But they did build street versions of each - Porsche built like 25 street legal versions of the GT1 911 and Mercedes built one street legal version of the clk gtr
@@The52car actually no - very close to each other but wsc cars were required to run iron or steel brakes, and lmp1 was allowed carbon brakes. I think the wsc cars also had less power via smaller engine air intake restrictors - I could be wrong about that one, but the wsc cars definitely had to use steel rotors. I think fuel capacity was also part of it - the GT1 cars could do like 15 lap stints and lmp1 roughly the same... So the wsc cars spent way more time in the pits getting fuel... Plus the steel or cast iron brake rotors needed to be replaced at least once during the race. Which cost each wsc at least a lap, usually 2. The ACO has ALWAYS been really strange and comes up with a lot of rules and regs that must make some sense to someone - but no sense at all to normal ppl
The warning signs were there, in the Porsche crash, for Mercedes CLRs at Le Mans the next year. Dalmas' crash is near identical to Dumbreck's. I wonder if there was something inherently wrong with the technical regulations for the last generation of GT1 cars?
Yes, and no. Road Atlanta is a ton of fun to drive because it offers a huge variety of elevation changes into and out of corners, weird cambered turns, good fast portions, good technical portions...but all that combined over and over is hard as hell.
