What he's meant to do in that situation is use his hands to take possession of the ball and then take a controlled disposal towards a teammate instead. A wayward kick without using hands is always insufficient intent because gaining ground without control of the ball has less intention at keeping the ball in play than a controlled disposal (towards a teammate).
Not sure how much this will interest you but Serong kicking the ball off the deck towards the boundary to clear the pack should be a free kick against. The rule comes from the spirit "the players shall endeavour to keep the ball in play" and the law is (not verbatim) "if a player is deemed to have not shown sufficient intent to keep the ball in play a free kick should be paid against them".
5:49 I reckon at the end of the season you should award a point of the year. Maybe you could make a little certificate and get it to the player somehow.

My biggest oddity for this round has to be the Crows coach putting in Berry as a tactical sub when we are like 60 points ahead, immediately within the first minute of the 3rd quarter he impacts the game in a major way idk why he isn’t just given full games or a chance unless we have already lost or already won

A lot of umpire slander this week, I definitely think most of these calls were the correct calls except for maybe the McLean one (do note that I go for swans). In my opinion the boundary one is completely acceptable as the entire ball has to be out and the boundary umpire looked to be in a great position.
4:22 There was no free paid because the Collingwood player threw the ball to the wrong Fremantle player when it was Freo's. However, in the 4th quarter, Collingwood threw it to another Collingwood player when it wasn't collingwoods ball.
As someone that umpires sport. The first minute of the game there is a lot of adrenaline and you are still getting your eye in for distances and calls. Sometimes you are just trying to keep an eye on the play ahead and in the second that takes you a kick has happened and you aren’t sure if it was or wasn’t far enough and you just have to trust your gut.

And it is a free kick in the rule book. 4:36 the umpire was calling for the ball to go to Fyfe, not for himself, you can't whinge and say theres no consistency when they're two different plays. The two giving the ball back - the first one (a free kick) was because it should have been given to the umpire, not another player. The Freo one was to a player (albeit the wrong one). This is not a free kick. The Bulldogs spoil was line-ball, but I've seen those given many, many times.
Umpiring has gone to the dogs in the last two years. It was never great but I feel that the standard and consistency of umpiring has tanked in recent years.

In the brayshaw and fyfe incident you can see brayshaw puting his hand up to Lipinski which would've caused confusion
