    Arty I just came across your channel today and all I have to say is WOW! I can relate to everything you're teaching. I started mixing back in late 80's on analog of course. Recorded and mixed tons of records for people in my commercial studio. The computer came along and it just wasn't the same for me but now with my kids making music and i'm listening to all these bad mixes I've gotten back in the mix to help them out so to speak but it's different. The sound is not the same but you can achieve great results. Your channel has opened my eyes and given me insightful knowledge on working in the digital realm and it's great to see you're using Logic as well.
    Continued Blessings

    I always mix and do top down mastering at the same time. I'll start with a custom Ozone 8 preset, SSL channel custom preset, a vintage limiter, tape saturation, a very soft final compressor and finally a brick wall limiter at -0.1

    • @SkyeLabMusicGroup
      @SkyeLabMusicGroup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Also for people just getting started. What he said about not mixing through a Limiter is actually completely down to preference too.
    Plenty of Engineers use a complete top down mixing approach including Limiting in their mixing processes. Try both, they each have their benefits and detriments.

    • @SkyeLabMusicGroup
      @SkyeLabMusicGroup  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Acled, I understand the approach 100%, and I do it sometimes myself. But for beginners, if they don't know what they're doing, I think they can get into more trouble that way. LOL.

    It always amazes me, in terms of practical mixing advice, how engineers who began it the era of tape machines often have better insight. I started mixing tracks back in the early 80's, went into software engineering, and started my own record label in 2018. How have things changed... My first set-up as a kid was a Tascam 4 track mixer, two linear tracking turntables, a Casio keyboard with 2 one second sample banks, and a JVC boom box for amping/recording. Today, if it wasn't for my core skill set in computer programming, I'd be at a loss. Again, thanks the invaluable advice. Harvest Media Company

      @SkyeLabMusicGroup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great tip...have been doing this for years...just tonight I A/B'd Billy Ocean's Caribbean Queen (such an amazing arrangement and mix for its time) against an original I'm collaborating on. Keep in mind your monitors and room are big determining factors in what and how you hear the reference mix as well as what you see on a sonic analyzer. You have to know what 10 khz sounds like on your set up, where the mids fall together, and how you interpret the low eq information.

    • @SkyeLabMusicGroup
      @SkyeLabMusicGroup  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      TRUTH, all of it! And yes, Caribbean Queen was absolutely amazing, and so musical as well. So well produced. I think it won a grammy. But yes, the room is a huge factor, always in mixing. But that's why you used to bring reference CD's with us from studio to studio. You know the songs and the mixes and how they should sound. So if the bass sounds boomy in the reference CD, you know that's the room. Your ears begin to get acclimated to it. And I'm actually experiencing that right now. New home studio, and my bass response is still off! More adjustments. Thanks for the discussion! -Arty

      Yep, I have a lot to say on it. But the short of it, is that it's a battle on every song to get it just right. And sometimes I don't, but that's what mastering is for 👍

    Great advices, I use the same methods, but one important thing, IMO, is to set the frequency analyzer to RMS reading: it gives you a much better "overall" impression of what's going on, avoiding sudden (and often misleading) peaks...

      Glad you liked it. Here is the list, but not enough space to explain in detail WHY each one is there, But I will do that on another video. I have different chains, but this is my default: bx-cleansweep, bx-solo, SSL Comp, UAD ATR-102, L3 Multimaximizer, or Izotope Ozone, Paz Analyzer, WLM Plus. Please let me know if you have any questions about it. Thanks 👍

    Cardo said Limiter is the devil lol...i would agree. i personally dont use it at all anymore but it does give a nice warm saturation at times. problem is on a whole entire track it can really destroy the dynamics sometimes in my opinion

    • @SkyeLabMusicGroup
      @SkyeLabMusicGroup  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you keep it on while your mixing. And everyone got their opinion :) But I use it on and off throughout the mix, and when I'm A/B ing so it pumps the volume up, and it's more comparing apples to apple. BTW, Love the visualizer on your videos! Nice work. -Arty

    My advice would be to route the professional track out past the limiter, or if mixing in a DAW ONLY midi map the reference track a/b trigger to the limiter on/off.
