One rule I was taught was rather than boost frequencies in an EQ subtract the frequencies around the Fq you wanted to boost, then adjust overall level accordingly.
Hey Bob. Subtractive EQ is definitely good advice for certain things. It does sound different than boosting though, but sometimes that's what's needed. Thanks for the tip 👍. -Arty
Hey Arty, I use that technique because if just boost I find I get into a level war with everything else then I start boosting this, boosting that and before you know it I’m clipping.
@@bigkid757 Just boost for the sound you are going after, but keep gain staging level afterwards. Most plugins have an output control. If not put a plugin which has one into the chain.

I just discovered this channel please make more mixing tutorials , I always have very low low mids in my mixes and I don't know why 🥺, also I still cannot find the overall right (kick , bass,) and sometimes vocal volume in the track 🤪.

@@melodyman8484 Yeah, talent is right. Melody is the intangible 'gift' that makes one set of notes a hit record, and the same notes in a slightly different order, unmoving. Bach, and Paul McCrartney, have very simple melodies that move a person in the first few notes. I wish I had more of 'THAT' myself :) -Arty
Awesome! Thanks so much for this. Do you ever go through sessions where you'll record once with a clean guitar and then again with effects just in case you need to use the clean track in the song?
It depends on the situation, but usually not. But with the great amp simulator plugins these days, it gives your more flexibility in the mix, so I understand why you might want to. But guitarists very often have their own sound, and worked hard on developing their own tone. So I try not to stray too far from it. But good question, thank you!
Hey Arty, just found your channel and love it. I have a question about releasing something as a first solo endeavour. I don't have a much of a budget for marketing (300 give or take). How do I get the best bank for my buck? Where can I substitute spending money with hard work? The record is written, recorded, mixed and mastered. Artwork is done. What is my next step?
Hey Josh. Not really my area of expertise, and the target seems to be changing constantly. If you haven't already released it, Distrokid is great for the digital distribution. And this guy Damian Keyes has a lot of good videos on promoting music. Good luck!
