Sri Sankarar did refer profusely from Sri Vishnu Puranam. It true that he did not refer on Srimad Bhagavata puranam. This does not question authenticity of Srimad Bhagavata puranam, since it’s contents are referred as is by works of Alwars and even Silapadhikaram. (Ex . Vadavarai mattaaki… etc)
Also, with due respects to Jeymohan, the reference to Tridandi is also wrong . This does not refer to TrisoolAm . It is just 3 staff tied together , typically recognizing 3 entities , sentient, in sentient and ruler of both , you call it Brahman or God .

Adi Sankar considered Manu a philosophical authority and that the society is to be divided into two main groups--dvijas(upper caste) and the sudras. The supremacy of the dvijas, in keeping with what Manu says, is taken for granted by Adi Sankar throughout his writings. We have to consider here especially his attitude to the sudras. Adi Sankara is a racist in modern classification. Manu himself is a criminal casteist and racisit. Alas, the humiliated and discrimated Hindus in Kerala embraced other loving religions. If Hindutva, RSS and BJP could not learn a lesson from Kerala and ardently support Brahminism over Hindusim, they are the dangers to Hinduism and not other religions. For Brahminins Hinduism is a source of Brahmin supremacy and never bothered about Hindus. In his commentary on Vedanta-sutra, Ramanuja strongly attacks Sankara's ideas. He states that the concept of Brahman as being indeterminate, without qualities or changes, is meaningless. Any reality that cannot be perceived, known, thought of, or even spoken about is simply fiction. The cosmic manifestation with all of its varieties may be temporary, but that does not mean it is unreal. Illusion is to perceive something as different from its real nature and not, as Sankara states, to perceive something that does not in fact exist. When one mistakes a shell for silver, both the silver and the shell are real, but the illusion is mistaking one thing for the other. Therefore the universe is real, but the illusion is to accept it as the all in all, and not consider the underlying basis of existence, which is God.
