  • Max Payne, the first big-budget action game from Finland, revolutionised the action genre by slowing down time. The film noir-like cinematics, time-slowing effects and visual novel sections were unprecedented for 2001. Max Payne quickly gathered a reputation and appealed to players worldwide. With Max Payne, Remedy rose to the top ranks among the international game studios.
    In the interview Sami Järvi aka Sam Lake talks about writing Max Payne, and he also tells how Max Payne changed the way games are written nowadays.

    I see his face and I see Max Payne.
    Sam, if you ever see this, thank you for my childhood. Max Payne, to this day, has the best story in a video game I ever saw. I first played Max Payne when I was 12. I am 23 now.
    Thank you, honestly.

      My dad played it in the early 2000's, in through the night while my mom was sleeping. He said it was a very good game. So a week ago i tried it out, it was very amazing! Merry christmas.

      James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne. Passed onto the otherside a week ago this Sunday. Although Sam Lake was the face,the voice was that of McCaffrey. May he Rest in PAYNE.

    I love listening to him talk, and this time it was double interesting because I didn't understand a single word (thanks for the subtitles) he still talks interestingly. And it's also fun to see he speaks the same way in English as in his own language. I though he talks slower in English because he's searching for the right words or something, but no, that's just the way he talks. I wish there was a version of Max Payne where he actaully says Max's lines both in English and Finnish :)

      I think he actually speaks faster in his native language than in English, way faster. You can notice that precisely by listening to him here.

    I'm 35 now and played Max Payne just a littlebit later after it was released, but i've never hheard anything of it untul a friend showed it to me. Matrix had a huge impact on me and the first thing that hooked me was bullet time, of course. But the unique atmosphere, the dark vibe, voice of James and everything...oh man. It was special and something else, altogether in a great tps. Had two posters on my wall back in the day and played the first two episodes a thousand times. And I will. Good luck with the remake, I know, you won't disappoint us!

    Question about Finnish: why does Sam say "ja" (ya) a lot. Is that the Finish version of someone looking for words "eerr..." in English, is that a common thing people do in Finnish or is that something just Sam does? I have never heard it before and think it is interesting.

    • @КарманныйБлоходав
      @КарманныйБлоходав 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure if I'm right, but the word "ja" means "and" in Finnish.
      And let's be honest, Sam Lake sometimes has a cute stutter, which makes the use of the word even more frequent)
