    The most chilling part of this video is the Robert Mullin entry when he explicitly tracks down some random dude who gave him weed in high school to kill him and his wife, and then going back and killing the woman who told him where he was and her children. Something about doing something so long ago that seems so innocuous that would just so happen to be the reason you'd get murdered probably decades later is so unsettling to me, combined with the innocent woman who was just trying to help this stranger.

Likewise his longtime accomplice said she saw him flay, skin, and butcher the corpses rather than just dispose of them "normally" as if he were preparing meat rather than hiding a body.
    This mind you this is only going off of his word to an undercover cop so it's impossible to confirm, but yeah.
    Really surprised nobody has based a Leather Face-esque character off of him at this point. He makes Ed Gein look like a saint.

He wasn't even particularly handsome, speaking as a person into men myself *yawn* but seriously, calling him some charming, handsome, smart guy makes him sound a lot cooler than who he actually was, which was just a loser who took advantage of women who were none the wiser, because they didn't realize they had any reason to be concerned or afraid.

So the lawyer not questioning witnesses actually helped the killer because it made it more possible to claim a mistrial.

I don't doubt that the reason the police did so little for so long and the jury was so quick to take pity on him was because his victims were prostitutes/homeless/addicts and mainly First Nations. The people in East Van knew they were being targeted but the police did nothing to protect them, thus that one woman going off to investigate Pickton's property herself.

    Another fun fact about pigs from someone who grew up on a pig farm: pigs are cannibalistic. The blood bit is also very accurate. Sometimes pigs will bite each other's tails, and if one gets bloody, it's fairly likely the other pigs in the pen will chew away at it until there's nothing left but a gaping hole in their backside. So instead those pigs will generally get moved into a new pen by themselves or maybe a handful of others that are sick or weak from being bullied away from food until they recover.

      Yup because she took a plea deal to commit Bernardo. Which made her just look like an accomplice rather than another perpetrator. Which is baffling, and don’t worry. All of Canada was shocked. It was a “deal with the devil” but it also made sure Bernardo was going to be in prison for life. In June 2021, he was able to apply for parole. After just an hour, he was denied.

    • @loreelaiii
      @loreelaiii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      To my knowledge their interrogation procedures are much more pro-conviction than the US, actually. In the US once you ask for a lawyer, they have to shut up and get you a lawyer before they continue interrogating you and if you say anything BEFORE your lawyer, it's not admissable in court. Canada isn't like that, and they can keep berating you and even wait a bit to call your lawyer after you're requested council.
      It leads to a lot of fake or coerced confessions.
      Now, on the *sentencing* side, their judiciary system I believe is more forgiving than the US is (considering you can get 20 years in jail for just selling weed, and Karla Homolka only got 9 years for her horrific acts).

    • @SassyGirl822006
      @SassyGirl822006 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The issue with Karla Homulka is that she presented herself as a battered unwilling accomplice, and the authorities didn't learn otherwise until they had already made the plea deal. I think her trial was already done before they learned the truth in Paul Bernardo's trial.
      There was much backlash. But I didn't learn anything about it until years later. I went to Girl Guides near where one of the murdered girl's (I think it was Kristen French) disappeared from, and got banned from the news after I started having nightmares about being abducted from the parking lot at Girl Guides.

    The good news on Paul Bernardo is that he was denied parole, and is designated a "dangerous offender", which makes it highly unlikely he'll EVER make parole.
    At his 2021 hearing, he showed a certain level of self-awareness, identifying that he realized he was doing it because he felt entitled to the act and feared rejection, and that while Carla certainly had her part, he was the one who set her on the path and "ruined her life".
    That said, these are clearly the acts of a very ego-centric man. Even while partly blaming himself for Carla's part, it reads less like an apology in this case, and more like he wants the CREDIT. It's all part of his control fantasy, and I wouldn't doubt that he'd do the same things again, given the chance.

He’s not saying it died and made him crazy cause it upset him. It’s that his beloved pet was slaughtered, and if he was a child that means his brain permanently makes the connection slaughter = love/affection, and later attraction. And like, not everyone’s pet gets made into food so not a 1:1 comparison. It’s not about how serious or intense the event was, it’s how badly your brain processes it and if you have a life or mind that can support recovering from it. Pickton is one of those killers that truly freak me out. His situation was absolutely a perfect storm. He was given the space and surrounding people to do what he did. His victims were unknown and not missed for a long time. He had an almost perfect way to get rid of the bodies and I’m convinced he was only ever caught because he kept trophies. I’m 100% sure they wouldn’t have been able to nail him with anything otherwise.
    There was a story/rumor circulating around his story (not sure if true) that he would make sausages out of the women mixed with pork meat and he and his other degenerate friends would enjoy a “long pig” dinner pretty frequently. It was even rumored that he cooked and sold his sausages at state fairs and what not. The man was an absolute nightmare demon and his story will forever fucking haunt me, for some reason more than any other equally heinous (or worse) killer.

      Unfortunately, what it actually comes down to (like in many of these cases) is police incompetence. Robert Pickton was complained about MANY times, and the police consistently dropped the ball on following up with him- Including when a would-be victim REPORTED him. If I recall correctly, an outside detective was even brought in and the local police undercut and sabotaged a lot of possible progress because they didn't like the guy. Simply the issue was that the police didn't care about sex workers going missing, which has happened... A lot. In many cases.

    Living in BC, I've heard of Olson and Pickton quite frequently. There's a lot of speculation about Pickton and why it took so long for him to be caught. A decent bit of people believe it was because a good portion of the sex workers who went missing and very possibly were killed by him were Indigenous women. See, being in British Columbia you really hear about how horrible it is for Indigenous women. A majority of the police don't give a shit and nothing is done when they go missing. For an excellent example of this I'd highly recommend looking into "The Highway of Tears" which is a highway in BC notorious for the murder's and missing cases of 80+ Indigenous women but many people think the numbers might actually be WAY higher. To this day many of the culprits are still unknown despite countless investigations. It's fucking insane because it's a highway that's only like a few hundred kilometers from where I live and is a constant reminder of how fucked the world can truly be. It's also crazy that it's very much unknown to the rest of the world, it seriously needs to be talked about and made known, we're talking 80+ missing people, all being women and almost all being Indigenous and it's barely ever talked about unless you live in the area, fucks sake even if you live here it's mostly just used a cautionary tale to never hitchhike.

      You’re completely correct, my auntie Tanya Holyk was one of the women he killed and fed to her his pigs. Our family had tried reporting her missing to the police for weeks but they ignored it until it was much too late (just another MMIW case not taken seriously). He also wrote an autobiography that was grossly taken in and published. Rumours say his brother, which is thought to carry out most of the brutal actions, is roaming in my city free collecting info on all the victims close family members so that’s also terrifying..

    In my sociology class we had to do a presentation on a serial killer. I did mine on Robert Pickton. There was actually a Criminal Minds episode similar to his story (a killer feeding bodies to pigs). When the episode aired in Canada it had to include an extra content warning. There are also a few songs about pig farm killers that are pretty creepy to listen to!

    The person who created the polygraph test said that it should never used in a court of law. And there is no scientific proof that it works as it was intended for.

    • @southofheck
      @southofheck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It never really is used as definitive proof though. You’re not gonna go from innocent to guilty based on a polygraph test, as there’s way too many factors in play for it to mean anything other than the person is possibly lying. If it’s presented in court, it’s usually alongside greater supporting evidence.
      Though I do agree it’s a bit sketchy to rely on what’s essentially a glorified heart rate monitor in criminal cases, but it’s involvement and influence in any actual case is minimal at best.

      Normally, the Polygraph isn't evidence itself, it's just a psychological tool to help some people confess thinking "shit, they know I'm lying, I'm cornered, might as well at least save the carpet even if I can't save the house".
      It's not solid evidence itself, but if some people crack because of the pressure it brings or start acting suspiciously because of the test, it's still a pretty useful tool to have

    WWII MUST be remembered. My dad- rest his gentle soul- was at the Battle of Okinawa… youngest man aboard ship, out of 700 men. He was just 17 years old, and he said it was beyond words watching his best friend be blown up near him. Sharks, yes… and crabs. They eat remains. Again, at the age of 17. He earned a Purple Heart. They were all so brave, bless them all. Cheers, lads, for your sacrifices. 💜

    Also the Karla Homolka situation was interesting because the plea was investigated and the investigator (a former attorney general) said that given they did not know the tapes existed at the time the prosecutor's judgement in making the plea was sound, professional, and reasonable. It also noted that given the current criminal code at the time the plea was made that there was no provision for revoking or changing a plea deal entered into by the crown prosecutors due to "change in material evidence".
    In other words- because Canada doesn't have a similar law to the US where if you lie while making a plea deal it becomes void, they were stuck with it even though Homolka arguably negotiated in bad faith by lying and not copping the tapes earlier.

He was actually a friend of a therapist that examined Karla prior to the tapes coming out in the trial, in which the therapist said that she seemed sane and innocent of the crime. The therapist after the fact said "Yeah I think I got that one wrong".
