I'm surprised that Santigo, an educated man, somehow forgot that humans have spent centuries crossing the ocean on voyages that lasted months, in even more cramped conditions than in this experiment, with alcohol present, and still managed to not murder each other. He could have just read a couple history books and saved himself years of effort.

I find it rather ironic how Santiago, who was so obsessed with getting results, was completely blind to the actual results the study yielded, which are actually pretty profound. All of these people were from completely different backgrounds, different culture, and yet, given the chance, they were all able to form strong connections and experienced incredible self discovery. How is this experience anything but an intense reminder of how powerful relationships truly are? How are these results a failure? Santiago was just so occupied with his proving his hypothesis that he forgot that disproving your hypothesis is just as meaningful in science, completely missing the incredibly moving results his research ultimately yielded despite his interference

I think the most interesting part of this is was the nature of communication and how pivotal It is in our society, there were problems with stealing food and problems with early distrust and mild aggression
However communication was the key difference. I would be interested in a (more humane, cause wtf) study where there is a language barrier.
What the nature of humans are when we can't communicate. Do we create new methods, do we teach what we know to each other, or would we be aggressive, hormonal monkeys?

I think making the raft so small and existence so communal was probably one of the main reasons why his experiment failed. Not that it would have devolved into what he was hoping for anyway, but making it easier to have privacy and where secrets could grow _may_ have added some tension or spite amongst the group. But mostly it's just hilarious how he attempted to get everyone to hate each other and he only succeeded in making them all hate him.

no it would've turned out completely differently like he'd wanted, like you said it was communal, even their time to destress themselves in bed, was with other people, they were never actually alone, they never had the ability to atomize themselves from the group, because in the physical reality they were always connected to the group and it wasn't deniable, you cannot deny that on a long voyage with set food everyone MUST work together to ensure survival happens, they had to work together, Santiago though gave himself a lot of time to be away from the group and stew in his own thoughts, all the while accepting to himself that he was never a part of the group, he felt an outsider which is why he became so paranoid I'd guess.

Not only do you outnumber the researcher, but you are forming a strong bond with these people and would be able to rely on them for safety and security. You’d have to add unrealistic elements like make the researcher capable of killing everyone themself, introducing artificial distrust, etc.

Santiago seems to be someone who was aware enough to see his own flaws, but instead of improving them, he projected them on everyone. You get a snapshot of his character from the choices he made. Like he assumed giving women important jobs will upset the men, because he was sexist. He thought having a priest there would make the men more aggressive, which says he was likely an edgy atheist. He also outed himself as a city boy with no experience hunting by his overblown reaction to the shark incident. He reminds me of a guy I knew in college.

It turns out that all three approaches led to functional crews.

Yes, also, IDK what kind of misguided logic led Santiago to conclude that female participants who were older and had kids were the ideal, the epitome, of female fertility and attractiveness.
As a young guy, an older woman who has already had kids with other men is rather not attractive, ESPECIALLY if I am looking for a deep, long-term relationship.

True. But I imagine this was his thought process:
Santiago: Hmmm how do I test to see if humans can become violent and cruel? Hmmmm OH I know! Scientists! Scientists are cruel people. They do lab experiments like this ALLL THE TIME! Hmmm whatelse..... OH! Mothers! Mama bear's can be BRUTAL in protection of their cubs. PERFECT! Hmmmm who else.... a priest! More people die in the name of God than anything! Hmmmm seems a little too..... controlled.... I need a chaos element.... OH! Photographers! They see beauty in everything and can't think about things like survival. That will stir the pot perfectly and create the perfect environment to see this happen! This plan is fool proof!
