The effort should be appreciated! You have chosen a large volume steamer where water enters the rice through the bottom perforations. This can be somewhat messy. Try this test: When the water reserve below has just started boiling, turn down heat to MINIMUM! Don't allow the flame to be blown off as that could cause a problem, so be present! Same setting for total cooking time! Just as you cooked the veggies, place washed rice in a normal container ( no perforations ) and and pour water to cover the rice by about 1/2 inch. You may add a teaspoon oil. The size of the container should allow it to fit in the basket you used and allow steam to rise around the sides and also allow it to fit under the glass lid. The steam will also heat the bottom of this vessel so you are not wasting heat. When the water has almost dried, (between 12 to 25 minutes) remove the vessel and check the rice. When cooked and cooled the ordinary kolam rice will be separate as basmati rice. No nutrition will be lost with veggies or rice. Your main vessel will remain clean. You will need a wire rack as used in pressure cookers using separator cooking where many things can be cooked together. Since you already have this large vessel you can plan this rack cooking side by side or in layers with no mixing of juices. There seems to be a misconception that the container has to be perforated. All steamers in the market should be used this way at least for the rice. Last but not the least tell your daughter she gets a hug from the viewers and more to come; if she waits quietly! Some of the tier holes are few, in that case place a small stand used for hot vessels under the rice container to allow steam to flow under the rice container and around it.
