  • In this Hobby Cheating tutorial, I take you through the basics of airbrushing Pro Acryl paints from Creature Caster. This came as a recommendation from several viewers and I love these paints from an airbrush because they can be turned into a glaze or filter so easily. Hope you enjoy!

    Just stumbled on this years late and I have to say how nice it is for you to go into the minutia of details about airbrush care. I have been airbrushing for years and struggle often still and your video just highlighted some of the reason why I think. I know you're a fan of VMA thinner but I found the ProAcryl to LOVE and I do mean LOVE X-20A,
    They can spray thicker than with VMA without getting speckly and can be thinned all the way to a super thin glaze without losing adhesion.

    Good morning Vince. I ordered some Pro Acryl paint, so here I am watching this old vid. There's something I"d like you to disseminate (if you try it out and approve, of course): these new (newish?) silicone fidget toys make good well palettes. The wells are narrow and deep, and thus delay drying better than palettes with larger wells. To clean them, you just let the paint dry and pop the well in other direction - most of the dried paint will crack up and pop right off... and the remainder can be removed with a sponge, toothbrush, or toothpick. I figure most everyone uses a well palette for select applications and folks need to know!

    Really nice effect on the terrain there. I never really use Vallejo thinner myself, usually opting for Mission Models or Tamiya thinner. It's always tricky picking the right thinner because I've noticed Scale paints tend to congeal when used with one thinner, while GW and P3 paints do it with the other. Tamiya thinner seems to be the best "catch all" in my experience.

    • @naphaneal
      @naphaneal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't Tamiya thinner mineral spirit based? Wouldn't that dissolve the paint too drastically?

    Question i don´t know if you have done a video on it before, but in alot of tutorials on painting the face we often see it split into 3 zones yellow red and blue, but i have never seen any tutorial on painting the rest of the body where those zones are mentioned.
    Is it at all possible if you haven´t done so already, that you might consider at some point in the future to do a theory/tutorial video, where you explain where those zones are placed on the rest of the body?

      I second the additional Warcolours videos. Particularly for airbrushing them specifically. The advice on how to do it on their own site is kinda vague (just use what you like! grrrrrr). I was able to find one TH-camr who had one video on what the actual paint to thinning medium ratio he used in his airbrush was, but it was only for like one color and I'd like to see if anyone else had any different results. I know Warcolours has a couple of tutorials on how to use their paint, but there's not a lot and nothing for airbrush specifically sadly. In fairness to them, they do have a pretty neat tutorial on blood effects.

    • @AtcRomans116
      @AtcRomans116 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zakhoskins6404 You should really only use ratios as a guide. Every paint is different and every paint manufacturer is different also. The more you use your airbrush and your paints the more you will have a feel for the right consistency. Me personally I start with a 3:1 ratio. But I know my whites tend to thicken so I tend to go 4/5:1 but this was after painting 20-30 models with my airbrush.

  • @Yipyiohorigin
    @Yipyiohorigin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Completely off topic to this video; I just watched your marble tutorial video, and I am curious about trying to do that effect but with a clear base color. Specifically, I've airbrushed a model and need to maintain the color gradients on it, so I can't lay down an actual color for the first layer. Could I, in theory, use something like a gloss or matte medium mixed with retarder medium as the base layer and then add the colored "streaks" on top? Or do you think I'd need to add something to the gloss/Matte medium besides a retarder to make it act like your base paint did on the marbling video?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to say I have never tried. It would be tricky, because the base coat being thick is part of what you need as you are removing so much paint. That being said, if you had enough perhaps gel like medium in there and thinned it out appropriately, it could work, I think you would probably have to experiment a few times on bases and see what you got.

    • @VinceVenturella

    Hi vince,
    I've been watching your videos where you use Pro Acryl paints and they seem pretty awesome, but do you think they are worth picking up over scale75 given their (relatively) very high price tag?
    Here in the UK a scale colour paint is ~£2.48. A Pro Acryl paint is £3.60. That's closing in on 50% more expensive. I think the shipping from the creature caster store may be quite high too which would be another potential cost negative.
    Also, for the white, do you feel this is a better option than using say Schmincke white / Golden white and/or FW White ink now? In your metallic axe video it really did look like the pro acryl white flowed very well etc.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say for sure on the UK pricing. The reality is, I use Scale 75, Warcolours and Pro Acryl now as my main 3 paints and I split them pretty evenly, so I don't think you can go wrong with them.
      As to the white, I use HBA white, white ink and the pro Acyl white, I often use all three on one project, I think they all have their uses and it's more what I am going for. If I am needing sharp control, I bring in some of the ink, if I am needing something bright that blends out, I often mix in some of the HBA and so on. Hope that helps.

  • @Tyler-rq7il

    Hey Vince, loving all your airbrush videos. I'm having trouble with primer through my hp-cs though. For priming i'd really like to get to a MAX dilution of 1:1 for quick coverage but i get clogs VERY quickly. I started at 18 psi and went as high as 25, but even at dilutions of 2:1 (thinner:paint) i'm still getting clogs. I do all the things you instruct (thinner before paint, always push air through needle after paint, etc). Any insight? What's your typical priming practice?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are a few challenges here.
      1) There is a clog in the very tip of your airbrush. You can't get that out through cleaning with liquid. You will need to take the tip off and get it out with the needle cleaning tool. If little bits of paint are stuck in there, it will clog with primer really fast.
      2) The humidity in your house is crazy dry, It is causing something to dry super fast.
      If I had to place money, it would be on #1.

  • @peterlageri4177
    @peterlageri4177 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am really interested in these but I am a little worried that the bottles will easily clog how often does this happened and is it easy to fix.
    Also do they last long on the wet palette like citadel and warcolors or dry out like the army Painter.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So I will say, they really don't clog in the traditional sense. I haven't had that happen at all. What does happen is the dry paint will form a little skin over the top and you just peel that off with your knife or fingernail. I will say, the fact that they don't clog in the traditional way like a vallejo bottle or something is actually a nice plus.

      Doc Eon I use vallejo flow improver as does next level painting who do almost exclusively air brush painting.

There is certainly nothing wrong with the flow improver as well, but really, it's more habit than anything else and It performs in a way I understand and can control.
