    As a 2004 monster owner, and owning it since new, I might be tempted in updating.The thing I would say to all the nah sayers is, if ducati doesn’t move forward they will end up being the Italian version of Harley Davidson, and no one wants that.

      People were complaining that they looked outdated in the ‘00s. However, my red/white S2R1000 was the most beautiful bike I ever owned, and the one that got the most compliments whenever it was ridden. Damn shame my local dealership Grenaded the engine, refused to fix it, and eventually the bike was sold off for parts.

    The vast majority of riders love their bike just by looking at it even when it’s standing still. Aesthetics is an integral part of owning a bike that as years passed has become classic. So yes, it may be a better bike but they could give it a pointed headlight and name it Streetfighter 900. Disrupting a cult family of bikes like the Monster was a wrong move.

I've also owned a Thruxton (900cc) and enjoyed it's light, nimble feel. The 1200 cc version has a little more torque that makes it fun. I had a 2018 Hyper and loved that bike; great visceral feel and performed well on long distance rides in "Touring" mode. I will likely buy another or find a used Monster 1220S.

It's the thing that worried me the most with the nineT, beside of looking like the perfect bike, the engine sound is not all that great when you have driven a desmo before and spec wise It looks like a boring engine but like you say mechanical perfect in everyway. I went to see for a Thruxton R, the sound is very good, probably drives good aswell but the exterior design is so basic I find it boring, plain painting design (black or gray) and I don't like the big metal strap holder around the fueltank, also the lack of a mono arm. But It's probably the most true design to a retro cafe racer, except for the watercooler. And the scrambler series feels like a downgrade, maybe fun as entry bike or when I am 60 years old...

    Beautiful in design and engineering! Cross pollination of the races brings about wonderful developments so, if it looks more Japanese than Italian, that's not necessarily a negative. Ah buddy, I can't bring myself to agree with you (though can't dispute any of the points you made) - I got into riding because I saw a Ducati Monster once when I was younger, it had a red frame and twin exhausts, I could see the engine and it made a racket that made me grin ear to ear. I bough my first Monster 2 years after getting my license but was surprised at how smooth the 796 was, the 821 seemed smoother still - it didn't have the 'rough and ready' character that I imagined it would. I feel like by chasing efficiencies they may be losing character - its the reason why as impressive as the Japanese roadsters are, I'm not drawn to them. It's the reason I didn't fall in love with the parallel twin in the 790 duke - I want my Monsters to be monstrous!

    One thing you failed to mention was the non adjustable suspension. Well the rear has preload I believe, but that's it. This could be it's weakness against the likes of the Duke 890 and 765rs. We will have to wait and see. But it is cheaper than the 890r so that will be a factor. Next year is looking brill for this category with this bike and the new MT09 spicing things up.

    Looks more in touch with the time... however the Desmo services must be a factor when buying. The KTM will be much cheaper to own on the long run. Ducati must not only address the style but also look at ownership cost over a period of time compared to their rivals ( and I am a Ducati fan with a new SF V4 S in the garage....).

    Had a 696 and 821, this new monster is dope and i feel like it's a great step forward into the new decade of motorcycles. Everyone complaining about the trellis frame is just stuck on nostalgia. Technology improves and so they find their way into modern machines. I give it to ducati bold move and keeps them from making HD mistake of not being able to break away from their past

    • @bborud
      @bborud 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want technology you wouldn’t get a Monster. You’d get something from Japan. It will objectively be cheaper and better. But it would look like a Japanese bike. As does this bike.
      Which begs the question: why not get a better bike if you already like the styling?

    Test rode this model couple of months back, some small windy roads and a stretch of freeway. I live in the tropics and it's hot and humid all year round. Power, yes, quite enough for me. Maneuverability, check. Fun, definitely. Looks... er, well... trellis aside, there's not much of a design identity that shouts out really positively at this point. Engine heat, most definitely, right side inner thigh, especially noticeable at a stop. Not that it'll fry anything, but it's hot even when the engine temp gauge reads just 90⁰C. My Yammie goes up to 105⁰C at stops, but I don't feel this kinda heat that the Monster emits, perhaps due to the engine placement. Anyways, it's good information on the reason Ducati headed this direction for the new model, may take a second look at it sometime.

    It’s great! As regards the styling, without the “Trellis” it still has the style, as with a lot of manufacturers, “If you don’t progress you finish up standing still”. This new Monster 👍👍👍

    Great review and opinion. I love it and it will sell like pancakes. I loved the previous one as well but sticking to outdated technologies because of nostalgia is a bad way to go. Look where Harley Davidson is because of stubbornly sticking to pushrods and air cooling. Reviewers are riding the new monster now and they all love it. I even think that in the future (say a decade or two) they will develop stronger and lighter materials and they'll be able to carve out sections of the new swingarm and subframe that will aesthetically reminisce of the "old trellis look" and those will sell at twice the speed of pancakes.

    I agree that it follows the original ethos of the Monster, and so in spirit is consistent with Monster moniker. But it just doesn't stand out like the old trellis frame Monster. And I feel like that visual impact is what made the Monster special. It was instantly recognizable. That's why I bought two over the years. Not because I wanted an Italian superbike on a diet/budget.

    Definitely correct 'Bob'. Excellent video......nice to see a contributor who 'adds' something, instead of just replaying the Ducati promo footage. Trellis frames are for roses to grow on and the 'love the ancient mafia' would have us all riding in horses and carts - guys - look what happened to Harley with their antiquated styling and think (!). The first Ducati (seeing as I am not limber enough to ride something like a Panigale) to tempt me away from Honda - that's saying something - and is bound to win over newer riders. We need to encourage new riders not subject them to a museum trip!
