You are correct! Of Mice and Men is a junior high school/ high school standard. And…..the copy that you show is the copy that we used in school!!! The Unbearable Lightness of Being is amazing! Oondjate wrote The English Patient.

Jurassic Park and Congo are two of my all time repeated movie watches. At this point, I could probably recite the movie from start to finish lol but I actually haven't read either of the books and they are both by Michael Crichton! I'll have to pick up Jurassic Park for sure but curious if you've read Congo?

I 100% disagree with the take that the book didn't deliver intense scenes. The scene where they get trapped in the room, when the Raptors are trying to come through the ceiling, was some of the most nerve-wracking shit I've ever read. Also the scene when they're in the waterfall. I think it did a better job than the movie. The movie always felt like a movie for kids, even when I was a kid, when I went and saw it in theaters.
Read Silence of the Lambs! The pacing is really good, like Jurassic Park. It's pretty much exactly like the movie, the only exception being, the guys she takes that moth to have a bigger part in the story. I would like to read the other books in that series as well.

My favorite Michael Crichton book is The Andromeda Strain and I also enjoyed reading Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Congo, Sphere, and Eaters Of The Dead.
A Psalm For The Wild Built was fantastic, I read that over a month ago, and I hope to read the second book soon. Currently I'm enjoying reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead and I haven't read any of his other books yet.

Jurassic Park was an amazing book and I felt the same way for years not wanting to read it as it’s one of my favorite movies.
Also the Thomas Harris trilogy is an amazing read thru especially if you love the movies.

The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon are the two greatest thrillers ever written. Sadly, the books fall off after that. But those two are incredible. Red Dragon in particular is a masterpiece.

I really really hope you read Harris' Hannibal Lector series; I cannot recommend it strongly enough! As a seasoned Stephen King constant reader, I assumed there was nothing I could read in a book that could disturb me ... I was dead wrong.
I definitely had to take multiple short breaks from the series to collect myself, but they are excellent and they will affect you strongly (probably for the better😂)
If you skip the 4th book (a prequel, Hannibal Rising) it will not diminish the original trilogy's quality or story. But do read it if you want even more lore and backstory!
Excellent video as always, thank you!

I love the movie Jurassic Park, I saw it multiple times before I even knew it was based on a book. When I read the book, I loved it too. I would say they're equally good, they're just good in different ways! If I had to choose one I'd choose the movie only because I'm biased.

Where do I start? I love old-school vhs horror films. I got into reading in my 30s after meeting my wife. And I started reading what looked cool to me and followed this trajectory till I recently found your channel where you basically are reading all the same things I'm reading. This is weird man. I just pulled silence of the lambs off my bookshelf last week thinking.. this is the next one I'm gonna read. Anyways. I'm on an Elmore leonard kick right now. You should check him out if you haven't. Rum Punch is amazing.

Sharing info about Rooney's on my FB feed. I've seen Uncle Buck about 40+ times. Every time it's on- I can't resist. What's sucks about the publishing world is that we have all these short books, but if someone wants to sell a book in Canada or the US, there's a required length. People don't know that but it's Europe and the UK that publish novellas and they're okay with it. It's very very hard to publish a novella in n. america. (unless you're established like S. King. but even he had a hard time publishing his first book. Reading his memoir ATM). Putting Foster on my TBR list. You'll love The Incredible Lightness of Being- it's different, yet so beautiful.

I loved Jurassic Park! I read it when it first came out and, like you said, thought the building of suspense and pacing were fantastic. You might also enjoy Michael Crichton’s Timeline. I thought it had one of the best hooks I’ve ever read! It was made into a movie but it was just horrible - they ruined such a fun story.
EDITED TO ADD: I commented before I saw you recommending A Psalm for the Wild Built. It’s become one of my favorites because it’s just so lovely, sweet and hopeful. 🥰

  • @wolfme4030

Long time no comment but I read a Michael Crichton book many years ago and thought if they made it into a movie, Sean Connery would have been perfect for one of the main rolls. Lo and behold, they did make Rising Sun with Sean Connery as the character I thought would be perfect for into a movie. Not only that. The film makers, for me at least, made a perfect adaptation. Other Crichton novels didn’t hit as well for me as the JP duology and Rising Sun so far, unfortunately.

Also - A Psalm for the Wild Built is a great recommendation! My mom is a newer reader and we decided to buddy read that book and the second book and she loved it. We physically read it along with the audiobook. If you're into that kind of thing, the audiobook was fantastic and it really added to the story!

Owls of the Eastern Ice is a really interesting read, it shows how difficult it can be to learn more about certain species. Quite adventurous, the author travels through harsh landscapes while following these rare and fascinating birds. Happy reading!

I read about half of Silence of the Lambs last year. Harris is a super mediocre writer. The movie is real close to the book but a lot better. (I read the first couple chapters of Red Dragon, and it's even more so). One of those rare instances where you have a great movie made from mediocre material.
