  • The nondominant arm is often overlooked on the tennis serve, but actually is one of the most important ingredients to a professional service motion. If you master the timing of the action of this arm, you will see great results on your serve!

Perfect. Non dominant hand leads in every throwing motion

Thank you. This is a part of the serve which gets so little attention. I’ll be sure to focus on this more from now on. 😊

thanks john! i was always wondering when to drop the left arm and often blocked my motion leaving the left arm too long up. then i found out, that my motion got much better when i drop the left arm at the moment when i start the racket drop and that helps to generate rhythm and power. the thing (for me) is to really focus on the left arm up before dropping...

Fantastic job again. I noticed at training yesterday that my left arm works perfectly when serving out wide on ad court and down the T on deuce side. I struggle on the other sides…I wonder why. Ok. Thanks again 💥🏆🎾

I always use the analogy of a pulley system, your non dominant arm goes down and the right side goes up. With the difference that the non dominant arm stops below but that's specifics. The non dominant arm also should stay at hitting side of the body. If it drifts to the other side you start to spin around. End up getting poor power

Hey John thanks for another enlightening serve lesson. Where I’m struggling with my serve is a low racquet drop. I’ve heard many times about the right to left movement and this being the key to a good racquet drop. I also heard about the serve being like a throwing motion. Anyway I filmed myself serving with the right to left technique and my racquet drop was at the level of my shoulders. Then I filmed my serve concentrating on the throwing motion. I did get into a lower drop; but, not a deep one that every pro player has. My question is should I think about the right to left theory or the throwing a ball technique. Now I am 72 years old and I also heard that being at that age limits the depth of the drop. When I do shadow swings I have a deep racquet drop with both theories; but, when I try it with a ball all bets are off. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Interesting topic and guidance.
"Pull the left hand away and then push with the legs": so the tossing arm is supposed to move before the leg drive?
(The videos showing Tsitsipas and Rublev seem to have the tossing arm pull and leg drive happen at the same time?)
Also, do you have any drills or cues for this or do students just repeat until they get it?
    Thanks!

So are you dropping your toss arm at the 45 degree angle or is it more perpendicular to the baseline facing the center net then you tuck? Thanks

It depends on where I am intending to place the ball. The left arm is the tiller that steers the boat! Best, John
