    "Just because something is fictional, doesn't mean it's allowed to be bullshit"

      I hate the whole "It's fiction" defence for bad films, TV series, games, books, comics or cartoons. Being fictional doesn't excuse its flaws or mean it can't be criticised.

    I have very fond memories of playing this at my uncle's house in the mid 90s who was showing off his new computer - the game was included as bundled software. My sister (who didn't even like video games but was drawn to this charming title) & I stayed up until 4am playing this from beginning to end in one go while my uncle was watching Leprechaun 1 & 2 on a loop in the other room.
    I have a vivid recollection of feeling like a fucking genius figuring out we needed to draw that damn skeleton into the furnace room to melt the bastard. My sister & I jumped around and cheered like fools delighting in our triumph while we watched the cheesy melting FMV.
    Oh the unbridled emotions of youth I miss you so...

    • @rachelkamerer9279
      @rachelkamerer9279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ha ha! This is similar to one of my memories of playing this, also with my sister. After we got caught by the skeleton the first time, we did the same thing and went into the furnace room. Then we were like, "What do we do now?" and just stayed there for a couple minutes. Finally we opened the door and as it floated toward the screen we both screamed. I think my parents had friends over downstairs or something. They probably wondered WTH we were screaming about upstairs but clearly weren't concerned enough to come check. Lol!

    Okay, I have to admit, I was OBSESSED with this game and nobody else seems to know what I am talking about!. A friend of mine had this game on her computer and we spent many afternoons playing it together. I recently discovered your channel and the fact that somebody else remembers this game is so exciting to me, haha. I really wish I could find an emulator of it. This, and the old NES game Shadowgate where formative for me, haha.
    I still have so many memories of being terrified of the electricity monster, the race to figure out how to trap it, and how exciting it was when we FINALLY solved the mystery just still brings back so many memories. I also had a crush on the brother lol. Some of the imagery and even phrases still live in my mind rent free - as a kid, this really did stick in my mind a LOT. I guess I can see how, coming into it as an adult in modern times might make it unimpressive or cheesy but this really was so awesome as a kid, with a lot of details to examine/discover and ways to die, haha. And the theater/map really was impressive in how vast it was! It had a great amount of scope. The music is great and creepy.
    And yes, we beat it without a walk through. :)

    This video caused me to ride a roller coaster of nostalgic emotions. Starting from my first introduction to this game being met with fascination and intrigue, to my numerous attempts to complete this adventure simply out of spite. Yes, the internet existed, and I’m sure a walkthrough was available somewhere, but this simply was not a common practice at the time. Nope, players were expected to complete the game by using trial and error. Sadly, I never did beat this game. Not only was this game incredibly difficult, but it also allowed you to play into un-winnable situations. A friend and I made it all the way to the statue, only to be missing a key item in our inventory, and no way to backtrack in game to retrieve the item. That was my last attempt and I immediately informed The Midnight Society that based on their initiation requirements, not only would I not be joining, but they could all go to hell.

    My older sister and I got this game in high school at a yard sale back in 2005-ish, and I never got to play it. We couldn't get it to work on our PC at the time since it was DOS, and this was before we learned about DOS Box. I really want to go find it after watching this.

    The "Goosebumps" books AND "Are You Afraid of The Dark" both freakin' rocked! As a kid I consumed both franchises like a rabid squirrel. But there was something about The Midnight Society that I was drawn to. I guess I wanted to have a bunch of friends that got together in the middle of the night, lit a fire in the woods, threw some magic dust into the fire, and acted all cool and shit. In reality I was an only child living in rural NJ who spent most of his time playing ALONE in the woods because there were very few people around us. Oh well, thanks for another entertaining and thorough review Roses! :D

    honestly, i watched both AYAotD and Goosebumps as a kid, and then tried to don the nostalgia shades later in life (Goosebumps can occasionally be found in Netflix in October, and they had a special on AYAotD a while back on... Nick, i think). Goosebumps may be suited to kids, but it doesn't really hold up well with today's special effects. AYAotD, on the other hand, was still pretty damn scary as a show. I'd say between the two, AYAotD is the better one.

    OH MY GOD!! I've been looking all over for this game, I always wax ecstatic over it with my kids about how awesome it was (when I was younger, of course), and couldn't find anything about it! Thank you so much for bringing back memories I've been trying hard to remember again! LOVE tbis video, and went even more bonkers on your Maniac Mansion vid! You should do Night Trap soon, that game was ridiculously cheesy! I think you'd love it!

    I never got to watch this, I was the weird kid watching horror shows I shouldn't have been and not knowing what anyone was talking about. This game reminds me of the old FMV filled Goosebumps games, I'd definitely recommend those if you love silly, cheesy horror games.
    Also, your make-up and costumes are always so good.

      Basically, there is no realistic way to LP it remotely due to how the game runs and the sound. We've played with ideas, but none are feasible. Sadly, for that to really happen, we'd have to be in the same room.

    Awesome make-up, Roses! Awesome vid too. =) I had no idea they made Are You Afraid of the Dark? computer games either.
    Y'know, even though I grew up with the Goosebumps books and show (I may have seen some snippets of Are You Afraid? here and there, but I did not watch that show for real until much later) I have to say, Are You Afraid of the Dark? is by far the better show. I still love Goosebumps, but Are You Afraid? is a lot more akin to something like The Twilight Zone, while Goosebumps, although it does have it's serious moments, like the excellent "Ghost Next Door" episode, is incredibly cheesy. More like Tales from the Crypt or something. Not that that's a bad show. Not at all.
    Btw, if you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend the series "Eerie Indiana". It's a great series in the same vein as Are You Afraid? and Goosebumps, though it follows a recurring cast of characters (Marshall Teller, played by the brilliant Omri Katz, his parents and sister, and his friend Simon played by Justin Shenkarow, who I swear I've seen before somewhere...) instead of having different people in all the episodes. It's also a bit more on the fantasy/sci-fi/comedy side than strictly horror. I love it though. Only downside is that there's only 19 episodes...
    Oh and btw, that "kid with the weird round glasses" is the god known as Gary-senpai. The destroyer of worlds! The bringer of doom! Most of the time he just likes to chill out with his Midnight Society, though. Listening to them tell scary stories. But some times, some rare times... He likes to tell his *own* stories. And when he does... when... he... does. Let me just say, *KIDS GONNA DIE TONIGHT!*
    ...Sorry, that's just me and my friends's stupid canon. It sounds better in real life, with different words. Unless the mess I just wrote down actually sounds good, in which case... nevermind. At any rate, I blame any nonsense, rambling and/or incoherence on it being in the middle of the night and me being tired...

  • @ianeborn6823
    @ianeborn6823 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting! While the title seems vaguely familiar to me, I don't recognise the game itself.
    I very much see (and hear) the comparison with The 7th Guest and Phantasmagoria. What it brings to mind for me, however, is Shivers--where this has you wandering an empty theatre, that had you wandering a puzzle-filled museum of the strange and unusual.
    (Shivers is an old favourite of mine, as it happens. Which, come to think of it, might be one reason that my mind jumped there instead of to the former two games: it may simply have a higher priority in my mind than do those.)
    As to realism, what I think that you're talking about is either internal consistency or establishment of setting elements. I see no problem with a story in which wax models produce ghosts--but it's likely to stretch willing suspension of disbelief a little if this elements suddenly turns up at the end, with no establishment or foreshadowing. Hence the counter-argument of "it's fiction" wouldn't hold very well (to my mind): the problem isn't that it's not "realistic", but rather that it just comes out of nowhere with no explanation.
    Your makeup-work was rather impressive, by the way! ^_^

    Oh, and a fun note: The Fountain of Youth in the museum is an Easter Egg. Just keep checking the reflection... and watch the time fly by. ;)
    As for the melting skeleton? Well, it's made of wax. It's "killed" by melting it.
    Edit to add: The kid with the glasses is Gary, the first-season leader of the Midnight Society. He's a huge fan of magic, after all, and he set up the story for you.
