Why is everyone so obsessed about her coughing over the mixture. This is TV, it probably was binned and not cooked at all, and if it was cooked, that would kill all the bugs anyway! Why are people so flaming precious days! Leave her alone, she was obviously struggling with illness, and being a trooper and not letting anyone down!
Coughing & cooking do not go together@TheRenaissanceman65
Amen to that and thank you very much!
@@lindanathan359 They do with me. But since I'm the one eating it it doesn't matter.
because it's disgusting.
Anybody commenting about the coughing etc, you have to remember it was a different time with completely different health and safety standards than we have today and obviously she wasn’t going to “call in sick” because that wasn’t the work ethic they had then, the show must go in and she just got in with it and I love that so much, it’s so interesting to see how different things were, plus it was an illustration of how to bake the cake for people at home, she wasn’t actually handing it out to the public to eat, it was essentially a prop, there’s no need to be so judgemental, it was a different time, put it into perspective and move on
THANK YOU! :) spot on!
It wasn't just work ethic, it's also about the fact that she is obviously a woman and a woman calling in ill would have been seen as weak and unprofessional and all other such lovely things.
100% spot on 👍
Er,no,wash them skanky hands immediately
Well if Emma tells us, then we must listen. Such rubbish 🙄
Folks, this was a live (no rehearsal) show, on a regional TV channel in the 70's...have some reasonable expectations regarding production quality..
Why would you presume there was no rehearsal?
Coughs into hand. Doesn’t wash it. Ahh, I’d forgotten just how great the 70’s were!
And wipes her nose 🤧...great
Judith: "I suppose you could buy tins with the small, tiny little chippins in, could you?--
Mary: "You could indeed, and that would be very good & easy, but I just bought what was cheapest; now get off my back! I'm feeling SICK!
I made a variation on this cake today, and even if I say so myself it is absolutely delicious! I used a lot less dried fruit than in Mary's recipe, part of which were raisins soaked in rum - also less sugar and less pineapple than in the recipe, and no cherries, so it wasn't such a heavy mixture. I added some ginger powder and two tablespoons of crème légère. It only took one hour to bake, and the result is a moist, fluffy and tasty cake, with a lovely pineapplely aroma to it. Adding pineapple isn't something I would have thought of doing, but it definitely transforms and ordinary fruit cake into something special!
yummy recipe except for the germs being spread
7oz self-raising flour
Pinch of salt
5oz butter
4oz caster sugar
4oz glacee cherries
12oz packet of dried fruit
16oz can of pineapple
2 eggs
2 tablespoons of milk or brandy
Gas mark 3 (325F) for 2 hours in a 3lb loaf tin, or two 1 1/2 lb loaf tins.
I simply adore Mary. I so wish she had called in sick on this day. She is so ill.
I’m sure she was a contractor.
I’d have called in sick, but that’s why I’m not Mary Berry!
That thick ass cough RIGHT into the hand at the beginning 😅 lol
Mary.. babe
Having read the comments and watch this episode. I say give poor Mary a break. She's obviously ill and not doing too well. She really should have called in sick. But didn't. Yes, she should not have coughed over everything. But when your sick, your not thinking. She's trying to get this whole thing done so fast anyway. It's ridiculous that "Good Afternoon" only gave her about 6-8 minutes for these spots. You can't rush through cooking and be able to demonstrate it well. She should have had at least 15 minutes or so for her segment. Spite all this, the recipe does look good. I'll have to give it a try, minus the cold.
Something odd about Mary. No smiles, no looking up at the camera, constantly wiping her nose and drinking water.
Oh dear...
Hahahaha omg this cracks me up I can't breath I can't stop laughing
Maaay I just have a drink of waater.
It makes it very very moist indeed.
Hilarious
I've made this cake twice and I'm going to make it every Christmas from now on. Really nice and keeps very well. Big fan of putting the pineapple in it. Haven't tried the brandy-instead-of-milk trick though.
Mary in her early days was so frightfully formal and middle class!
Lol infact upper middle class
Almost upper middle class lol
Nothing wrong with being formal and middle class in my opinion. In fact we could do with more of it today.
And bought the cheaper pineapple
Mary Berry is the best Cook.
Although Mary Berry is extremely nice and very likable for her straightforwardness and skill, she is unable to banter well. The other woman tries ... but you just can't shoot the breeze with Mary in this format. The fault here lies with Mary, not with the other woman .... But, you cannot argue with success - and Mary certainly is that! I personally love her.
She's trying to make a cake, remember all the ingredients in a limited amount of time. On top of that she is trying desperately not to cough. Give her a break.
The other presenter is Judith Chalmers from the travel show. Mary has aged better than she has.
I've only ever watched her older videos and thought she had terrible arthritis but now I see that's just how she holds her hands
She had polio as a child and spent many weeks in hospital. It’s that weakened her left hand side, particularly the strength in her hand, and she’s got a curved spine. It clearly hasn’t affected her though!
StripyTigers that's so interesting, I had no idea! She still cooks better than most of us though 😍
I had thought arthritis too, from her newer videos. But after seeing her hand was the same, in this I realised it must’ve been more of a disabled hand, or caused by something. Good that Stripy Tiger provided the answer, as I was wondering.
I am not much of a cook...even if my family name is Cook.
I love Marys talent...not nearly as complicated as Julia Child or Martha Stewart. Yes, MS. Berry isn't herself...but she marches on.
This was in 1974, things were different back then, I don't think she would be coughing on her hands & over the food now. Mary Berry & Judith Chalmers are still friends.
Stormy Rain
No. Things were not different back then. No excuses. This is gross.
@@maryholeman5976 You're living proof things were different then. Today, people are critical and defensive over frivolous things and rarely give the benefit of the doubt. They also don't research and see the whole perspective (eg. Mary was ill here, and thought it awkward to excuse herself every minute to go wash up after every cough on live TV. Plus, this was an act; an instruction video of how to make a cake. I doubt people ate her creation during that video, nor do I think she would be baking on her own under such conditions....she'd be in bed).
Oh God, gotta love Fruit Phlem Cake
She's so elegant and beautiful .
Everyone that says they hate fruitcakes, never had a homemade one. The dreaded ones are those leaden mail order horror shows!
The good ones are made with a lot of nuts.
"Why's it extraordinarily good?"
"Because it's got a can of pineapple in".
Right.
Wow, that host and Mary did not seem to like each other.
Correct they were mortal enemies
kindly give all the measurments
7oz self-raising flour
5oz butter
4oz caster sugar
4oz glacee cherries
12oz packet of dried fruit
16oz can of pineapple
2 eggs
2 tablespoons of milk or brandy

I say! Beeb still had received pronounciation in force in the 70s, I’d forgotten how “posh” everyone sounded
Who knew coronavirus was around in 1974
It's a good thing Mary's chopping skills has improved since then. It would have been much easier just to slice into the pineapple ring instead of murdering them. I guess because the cake cooks for Approx 2 hrs, it's ok to cough over your hands and the food. It may only have been a tickle in her throat, but still...I guess she'd be embarrassed about it now.
It would have been easier to slice into the pineapple if her hands were not shaking from illness. Perhaps she FELT like murdering the pineapple? I guess because she was SICK, it was OK to cough over her hands and the food. It may only have been a throat tickle, but still...it may have been pneumonia. I guess when learning the truth, skeptics would be embarrassed about it then.
Mary hates her co-host
How very formal were things back then.A very Frosty atmosphere.
means in 1974 there was no concept of clean cooking! she mixed all her germs in cake butter though!!!
cleaning precaution are necessary while cooking doesn't matter if that's for you or for any one you are teaching :) peace! happy cooking..
Sorry, people knew back then basic hygiene. This is just gross.
Back in the days when an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection didn't stop you from appearing on a TV cooking slot, and you infected all the staff and crew...🤣🤣🤣
As wonderful as she is,it makes me cringe when she coughs, even in her hands. I was hoping she would wash them as to not transfer her sickness. Poor woman.
The days when you cough on your hands and continue cooking.
I still do that and I've never had any problems.
I wonder how much flour. Oh 7oz
OMG bad days of Mary 😂
Coughed into her hand then put it into the salt 😠
She talked more posh in those days than she does now.
Poor Mary! Suffering there with a bad throat.
There we are. Cough, hack, cough. There we are
i reckon that "water" is gin 😆
watching the program I thought, because he coughs while cooking and uses his hands, the same ones he uses for cooking !!, what times those.
mirando el programa pense, porque tose mientras cocina y usa sus manos, las misma que usa para cocinar!!, que tiempos aquellos.
If this was today I'm sure mary would not of been ask to go to work on the simple basis's on her not being well enough unbelievable
That moist pineapple is becoming a nuisance
2019??
Oh yessss!!
"Cake Cake the food of Jake" Thets me.
Poor Mary was really ill, not a good idea in the kitchen.
Even the butter and eggs were already mixed together
Why was everything just so drab and dull back then?
it wasnt it was just the T.V. wasnt very life like then lol
I think it was commercially expensive to post-edit a footage for such variety show. In modern day, no matter how clumsy Nigella admits to herself, all of her cookshows are heavily edited to look less messy.
Kyle A I have no fucking idea, and I was there.
It sure was though..
Because people were not yet desensitized by gore and action films, or felt compelled to check social media every 5 seconds due to OCD. Common, normal things were actually interesting to people then, unlike now, where they are desperately looking for their next fix.
She is coughing on her hands and touching ingredients yuk🙄🙄
Terry Kamau : yah I was cringing each time she spread her germs, and unwashed hands!😬
@@lokahi27 Just watch her other shows and not this one, and you'll be fine.
I doubt anyone ate what she mixed up during that show when she was sick, so what's the problem? And compared to today's gory movies, this is "mild" stuff.
Man I hop this is a spoof at the end if she's coughing on everything and her hand and touching everythingand rubbing her nose.... I'm noticing the handshaking and I am probably horrible. This does not bode well for her health and wellfare.
Deanna Stevens we could make it a drinking game "drink every time she coughs into something" :D
hahaha..
Now. How was anyone supposed to know any of that. I wasn't being mean and I said so. and you are being rude. and She went on to do many more episodes where she's not coughing on all of the food and shaking.
SO> Thank you for the information. and Thank You for being so blunt. I believe I even said something about it not boding well for her health. So I was obviously right.
well said@@deannastevens1217
Well she's lived into her eighties. Her health has apparently held up.
She never cooked, look
I smoked a cigarette to make me cough . B
blarghhhhhhhhhh
Cross contamination 🤧
Despite what it appears, germs do not spread through computer screens person to person.
Keeps coughing into her hand..but doesn't wash them, yuk
Are you eating the cake? No? Then stfu.
So she coughed Into her hand and didn't bother to wash her hands and she is handling food. Think I will pass
Don't worry, I don't think you will get her germs through the computer screen! Good grief!
I really don't think Mary's going to force you to eat it, from 45-odd years ago, and via the medium of TH-cam. If she could, she's certainly more worthy of a Professorship of Time Engineering than a Damehood... 😆
Mary seems very unfriendly here. The other woman is gracious and lovely but i guess time has mellowed her.
She's ill.
What a mess of a show
She is very Brash and rude. Poor Angela Rippon
It’s Judith Chalmers 🙄
How revolting.
Appalling. The cake, the coughing, her hoity-toity attitude. So glad Pru is on Bake Off now.
You might act hoity-toity too if you had to perform when ill while receiving rapid-fire questions. Then getting negative reviews on TH-cam.
@@dlariby She didn't have to do it then, as she doesn't now but does because of £££.
Wish you would v. K off
Yeah because Pru is so down to earth and not at all stuck up LOL
@@dlariby I don't think she cares about negative reviews 50 years later on a medium that didn't even exist then.
It is very off putting to say the least
Disgusting!
Yuck. Very unsanitary. Being on tv she should know better and used it as an opportunity to tell people to wash hands.
Hope Mary has learned since then to wash hands.
