Dr. Abramson, thank you for making the titles of your videos so well organized! I am enjoying the Jewish History Lab, and appreciating the numerical order of the videos.
wow. Some great unintentional prophetic imagery in this one. I never thought of Jonah as a type of Israel in this aspect, swallowed by Assyria and then given up again to be a light to the nations. "small fish swallowed by the big fish"
The Shomronim (Samaritans) are an interesting bunch. The Assyrians did import people from Cuthah and other places, but they also didn’t deport every single Israelite- Samaritans most likely descend from a mixture of those 2 populations
Really trying to learn religious history for myself and was really curious to hear why god sent a siege on his own people thank you sir very informative!
My father's side are persian jews who come from Hamadan, Iran. Hamadan was the capital of the Medes, and back then it was known as Ecbatana. Is it possible that my father's family arrived in Hamadan as a result of these Assyrian deportations, and although they were not technically of the Judahite tribe, later during the Achaemenid era, got back in touch with their fellow Israelites and maintained their Judaism through them. In that case, they would be a lost tribe who are not really lost, but just don't know what tribe they belong to. Or perhaps his family arrived in Hamedan later, and were descendants of the Judahites, hence why they might identify as jews. What is your take doc?
Today the only tribe that maintains its lineage is Levi. Jews are not always Judahites, and Judaism is the religion of all Israel, not just Judah. So for your family to identify as Jews has nothing to do with their tribal origin.
@@babababad Not necessarily. The samaritans are Israel too, genetically, linguistically, religiously, and culturally, and they are not followers of Judaism but Samaritanism, their own religion. Today, jews identify as jews because they mostly come from the land of Judah, after the Babylonian deportations of the land of Judah, specifically Jerusalem, of 586BC. But over 100 years before this, during the Assyrian deportations of 720-700 BC, the tribes belonging to the kingdom of Israel were deported, and they were not necessarily jews nor would they have identified as jews at that time. Afterall, why would people belonging to menasseh, rueben, dan, etc identify as judah? AND, according to Assyrian records, these tribes were deported to the far eastern ends of the Assyrian empire, which is modern day Iran. These people would have lived there, and it would not be until nearly 200 years later that they would eventually live under the same empire together with the judahites, the persian achaemenid empire. It is at that time that maybe they would make contact with the judahites that had been deported into babylon, and perhaps reconnect with their fellow hebrew speaking peoples, and then later eventually come to identify as Israel and as Jews.
The Mormons believe that some of them came to North America and became native Americans (after becoming dark skinned as punishment for sinning). I think actual Native Americans may have some different thoughts on that concept… lol
Since Talmud records Kuti as not just foreign colonists but also one Rabbi says their name comes from being descended from one of the grandsons of Yakov-- so maybe 2 different Kuti; the Israelite Kuti and Assyrian colonists/refugees (forced or not forced to relocate?) So maybe the Israelite Kuti embraced them, showed em the ropes, adopted them into their tribe. But further complicated as I understand that many Shomron today are actually descended from Muslim converts to the Samaritans. Which may have further sever to purge any remaining bestiality and avodah zarah which may have persisted from Talmudic times (although I wonder how common in reality those practices were; the Talmud seems to imply one had to pretty much assume every Kuti was a zoophile and idolater; although I can't help but see this as an exagerratory halackic stringency to cultural wall away from a very real minority; I mean even if a culture promotes bestiality, how many cultural members would really take to such extreme perversity?)
Hi this is one of the DNAs I have been matched to tomb of a king I. Macca able North Israel I m from greek Cyprus they think it must be from northern tribes king as I match DNA with I have no Assyrian matches or in that region I have no philastine matches just in areas of Israel North and Judah south as well as Roman Bronx areas and Cyprus. This head statue must then be from a tribe of Israel at some point.
Dr Abramson, as always, a terrific contextual summary!
Thanks!

There are scholars who would support this position.

Could you tell me what year approximately that King David reigned?
Interesting pronunciation of 'tumult.'
Very good!
Thanks!
Slight correction - Jehu was not Ahab's son.

Not sure how to respond. The literature can be interpreted many ways.
