    When people say "Wow you must be a genius to solve that" They are giving credit which belongs to one of the biggest cubing geniuses, alongside Pochman and others.

    Fantastic interview. I learned to solve in 1982 so it really reminded me of those days. I remember on my first cube the faces were ordered differently, green and yellow were opposites as were blue and white so it got a bit confusing if you swapped cubes with a friend and they had a different colour scheme. Of course there was no youtube to learn from so it took us all a lot longer to learn but people learned a lot from each other and just by persistant trial and error. A lot of people had different but similar solutions to each other, layer by layer tended to be most popular but there were a few differences in last layer. I solved the last layer corners first then finished with last layer edges while other people solved last layer cross then corners last. My father worked out a completely different solution where he solves all edge pieces then finishes by ordering and permuting all corner pieces. It really was exiting to see how different people managed to get around different problems. my one and only cubing competition was around that time with a school comp. It had around 20 competitors and the winner got a very respectable (for the date) time of just over 30 seconds. Lack of F2L and old cubing technology really slowed us down but most of us had averages of around 40 to 50 seconds. People like Jessica and Lars Petrus really were on a different level. Thanks for giving an oldie an excuse to dream of days gone by while playing with a cube.

    • @gertebert
      @gertebert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true!! I learned to solve the cube also in 1982. I remember vividly I got one with Christmas. I got a stencil with some "formulas" and after a few weeks I could solve it in 2 minutes. I was so happy!

      Well, for me ZZ is better when you get used to it. You can make the cross and at the same time you orient the edges, so F2L is easier and you don't have to rotate. Also, you only need to learn 2-look OLL for ZZ and PLL to be as fast with CFOP. But yeah, ZZ is bad at the beginning, but it gets better with practice without learning a lot of algs
