    Lovely memory jog for me - took our caravan on the ferry when our kids were little stayed for two weeks and had such a great time. I had to work in the middle of the holiday for 3 days so flew back home from the beach- epic trip ! My Son hated the ferry trip, so when I got back to Barra I suggested that wife and kids should fly back home at the end of the holiday while I brought the caravan back on the ferry. Fabulous memories of fun in the sea , seafood and very lucky with the weather also. You’ve made me want to take them back !

    Thank you. My maternal grandmother, Beth MacNeil, was born on the Isle of Barra. Someone in the family is still there in the original family dwelling. My youngest sister was able to fly into Barra, landing on the beach. Thank you for sharing ...

    Exactly 20 years ago, my wife and I have visited Barra (mid December) Because of a gale the Caledonian McBryne ferry was delayed over four hours so we sailed by night. On our way the ferry stopped to stay stand-by because the RNLI asked to, in case a the crew of a vessel in need had to be taken. aboard. Barra was marvelous and during the winter-season we were about the only tourists. When we were hiking from Casltebay to Balnabodach in bad weather, someone who lived near Breivig Bay, saw us walking on the A888 near the mount Heaval. He mounted his Land Rover, drove up the hill, asked if we were in some kind of trouble and when we assured him we were okay, he turned arround and re-entered his warm and comfortable house.

      What a great story, I bet Barra was wild and beautiful in the winter! Also the sea, being on a night ferry must feel so different, that's quite a crossing tondo in poor weather at night. Thanls so much for sharing your experience with us

    Lovely. Barra is so far the only island in the Outer Hebrides that I haven’t been to. That’ll change soon!!

    Great video guys. Have to say I did laugh at your pronunciation of the Gaelic words 😂 There is so much more to see on Barra and Vatersay but I think these secrets are best kept to us locals 😁

    • @MacSarah
      @MacSarah  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Martin, haha I just knew we'd be butchering the Gaelic words, so sorry! We adored Barra and Vatersay but totally agree that those hidden local gems should be for locals rather than us tourists. Thanks for watching and we really appreciate your comment. All the best

    I went to Barra 50 years ago when i was a student. Its stayed with me ever since. Memory plays tricks on you but i seem to recall the castle was being rebuilt then. I also recall a dance we went to. it was the week of the Glasgow fair if i recall and the Island had its own version and celebrations one of which was a dance where "Ladies night rules applied." This meant that when you danced with one of the local girls (or those over from the mainland) they would try to trip you up "by accident." I was with 3 other lads and we went down repeatedly like skittles, tripped by some smiling assassin, before we realised what the game was. Lovely place, lovely people and seeing this has made me want to go back and see it one last time before the sun sets.

      What a wonderful and fascinating memory, thank you for sharing it with us! We can only imagine Barra 50 years ago, but I bet it had a very strong community feel, just live the idea of girls trying to trip up the boys, what great innocent fun! We really hope you do get to visit again, we'd love to! Some places just stay with you don't they? Thanks for watching Laurence and all the best!

    Great insight into the island, I'm actually flying into Barra in September. I'm a bit worried now. I don't mind the flight being cancelled on the way home, just not on the way there!

      Oh really? Well fingers crossed for clear weather on the way there 🙂 the airline worked really hard for people in terms of getting them another night of accommodation. You'll love the island, it's absolutely wonderful. Thanks so much for watching

    Lovely video and a great reminder of our own trip to Barra last month - it is truly a gorgeous island and wish I was back again after watching your video. Loving all the archaeological references and the stunning footage. What was the name of the shack you stayed in on Barra - it looks very cosy and a change to a campervan!

    Unfortunately Barra is being spoiled by tourists now that it has been 'discovered.' When I first knew it over 60 years ago, it was so quiet, there were hardly any tourists. Even the hotel had burnt down and it was an 11hour boat trip from Oban via Mull, Coll and Tiree.

    • @MacSarah
      @MacSarah  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, thanks for watching. I'm sure most places have changed a lot in 60 years, but I'm keen to understand how you think Barra has been affected negatively? Of course, we don't live there and only residents can speak with any credibility, but it didn't feel spoiled. A faster ferry is good for everyone I imagine. Save for a motorhome which had gone off the road we didn't see much else, of course in high summer it may be different.

      @@MacSarah 60 years ago even in July, it was deserted although the beach seemed crowded just the two of us and a half dozen cows. There was no traffic and you could just walk without seeing a soul. The place came alive after 10 pm when the bar closed and the men would turn up to the ceilidh just in time for the dancing to begin

    There are some very dark secrets on this and many islands in Scotland.
    Take my advice.
    Avoid.

      Thank you for watching. I think there's both light and dark everywhere. I'm sorry if you've been personally affected. Regards
