A very pleasant, low-key excursion to a remote and out-of-the-way place. Those brave pilots on the Otters must be among the best in the world. Some of my family lived on Barra, about 12 generations back, but this is the first time I've gotten a good look at it by video. I can imagine myself visiting there and walking around the whole island. It's surprising that there seem to be no trees. Even on Iceland, much farther north, there are trees that have been planted. You can tell there are fierce winds constantly blowing. There's a joke in the family, applying to all the Outer Hebrides, that on one rare day, for just a few minutes, the wind stopped completely and everyone fell forward, on their faces.
@@stevemcdonald1033 Thank you for sharing! It’s such a great place and it’s somewhere I’ll definitely be returning to some day - hopefully you can pay a visit soon to retrace your ancestors’ steps!
I have been to Barra twice by plane and ferry, l would recommend flying. Great place to just relax, time slowed as soon as you arrive. Just go for a week it will feel like 2 weeks but in a good way. We stayed in a cottage with a coal fire no TV, sitting watching the fire flickering listening to music or reading. Great time.
Sounds incredible! I would definitely like to spend more time in the Outer Hebrides during Spring/Summer sometime. However, I won’t be as lucky as during this trip where there were no tourists other than myself!
@@robbiewatsontravels The second time l went it was mid June, unless it has changed it wasn't really busy. That time of year it doesn't really get dark.
@@deandashingly872 we were delayed 30 minutes out of Glasgow, but the weather cleared up enough to enjoy the beach landing. Missed the bus into Castlebay, so I climbed over the dunes to walk the Atlantic facing beach with maybe four other people, to await the flight back to Glasgow. I bought a "Beach Landing" certificate to mark the trip. It was a brilliant experience.
I flew between Glasgow and Campbeltown some years ago and the experience was pretty hair-raising. Perhaps one could overcome one’s fear of flying in small planes just to visit this heavenly place (or simply use the ferry!).
Thank you! Yeah Castlebay is pretty small (more like a village) so easy to walk around. If you use Google/Apple Maps I would suggest saving a map of the area for use offline as mobile signal wasn’t good. There is a bus service going around the island and one over towards Vatersay but they are very infrequent. Bike may be a good option to get around if you didn’t want to walk. It took me about an hour and a half to walk from Castlebay to Vatersay Church.

Yes, I don’t think you’d have much luck finding a single tree between Stornaway and Castlebay.
I went to the isle of barra 1 week ago 😂😂😂 i loved seeing the beaches in vatersay, and going to the airport 😊😊😊
Both Barra and Vatersay are amazing! I really need to go back for a second visit 😃

I'm flying up there in September, your video was very informative thank you. I'm staying in Castlebay too, is it easy to find your way around?
Thank you!
