    Your channel is pretty awesome, I keep agonizing over seeing my 91 parked in front of my home due to rod knocks. I keep debating whether just swap in another 3.0 or do the 3.4 but hearing you explain it made it a more attainable option. How long did it take you to complete the swap? And the estimated cost of it?

    • @rookieoverland7104
      @rookieoverland7104  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sorry for the late reply haven’t had very much time to check into the channel lately. It’s a very straight forward swap. With other projects and working full time I completed my swap in about 8 months. Not to say I couldn’t have done it a lot sooner but I work pretty slow. In all you can complete this swap anywhere from $700-2500 depending on what you make yourself vs what you buy premade. I’m glad you like the channel! Will be uploading more videos very soon so stay tuned (:

    Hello. I’ve watched your video and had a question. I came across a site that mentioned if you have an auto trans, it’s best to take a 3.4 from a 95-98 T100 because the shift timing is on point unlike a 3.4 from a 4runner. What engine is yours and do you know anything about that? Thanks

    • @rookieoverland7104
      @rookieoverland7104  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is correct. The t100 ecu is programmed to work with the 3.0 auto trans. However you can still get any 3.4 and source a t100 ecu and harness. On this build I actually used the auto trans from behind the 3.4 and adapter a gear drive transfer case to it which made it passenger side drop.

    • @rookieoverland7104
      @rookieoverland7104  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This swap can be done for anywhere from $700-$2500 depending on what you fabricate yourself or buy aftermarket. Best option is to find a donor. That way you can part out the rest of the donor truck to make some of your money back.

    The swap is not as straight forward in all cases. I am swapping a 2000 3.4 into a 1989 Toyota pickup 4x4. So far, I’ve had to modify the original AC bracket to fit with the 3.0 engine mounting brackets. Just some trimming with an angle grinder. Not a huge deal. You also have to transfer all of the oil pan components from the 3.0 to the 3.4 to make it work, not just the pan. For example, oil sump and oil splash guard(I think that’s what it’s called. Sits between oil pan and engine block.)Those are some things I didn’t know about. Hope this helps someone. I’ll add more as I continue in comments.

      Mine was a tad short as well. Had to take one of the adjusting nuts completely off and move the throttle cab as far as I could towards the throttle body. I also had to bend that bracket a small amount.

      Sorry for delayed response, I would say roughly $1200-$1500. Although there are tons of ways to save money with this swap. I chose to buy prebuilt crossover and have someone else tackle the wiring. Those were the main expenses. Plus freshening the engine up. Grill is 79-83 Pickup grill from rock auto.

    • @rookieoverland7104
      @rookieoverland7104  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you actually need the 3.0 pan to clear the front diff. Whether you’re still ifs or sas the oil pan on the 3.4 won’t work. And I did use a 1.5” body lift.

    • @enriquecastellon6524
      @enriquecastellon6524 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @rookieoverland7104
      @rookieoverland7104  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for he delayed response. Marlin crawler and trail gear both make adapters for this trans to tcase set up. You will need to get a new input shaft for the transfer case that has the correct splines. If memory serves me correctly the factory top shift has 21 splines and you need 23 spline.

  • @marlonburt3794
    @marlonburt3794 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am considering this swap and upgrading my suspension to the OME medium duty coils and shocks. This suspension upgrade gives a 2" lift. Does that suspension lift allow the 3.4 engine to fit in the engine bay? Or is it necessary to to a body lift?

    • @rookieoverland7104
      @rookieoverland7104  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately a suspension lift will do nothing to accommodate clearance under the hood. There’s mixed reviews on it, but some have said that the 3.0 engine mounts allow it to be low enough without having to do a body lift. Others have said differently. So I would use the 3.0 mounts and at that point check for clearance. Can either cut into the hood or body lift. I already had the body lift sitting on the shelf so I just put it on. Best of luck with your swap!

    • @rookieoverland7104

      The best an most common trans would be an r150 if you’re staying manual. The stock 3.0 manual trans is an r150 and it bolts right up. I’ve been told you need the 3.0 throw out bearing but you’d have to ask around on that one because I’m not certain.

    • @enriquecastellon6524
      @enriquecastellon6524 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dillon Koch I haven’t finished mine but it not just the 30 horse p. The 40 ft. Of torque peaks at 3600 rpm where 3.0’s 180 peaks at like 4200 or 4500. This alone make a huge difference in the powerband with better mpg to boot. I used to have a Tacoma in 96 and I remember running up mountains no problem, 3.0 I’m fine around flat land but steep mountainous acceleration even with a manual transmission is what made me think 3.4..

      The grill swap was pretty simple. You take a 79-83 Pickup grill, which can be found brand new on rock auto, and trim it down until it fits.

      Rookie Overland thanks !!! I have the original pickup lights the 5x7 I believe. Do I have to buy the trim that goes around the headlights for the grille to fit? If so do I have to buy the trim from the older Toyota grill or the one that came with my truck?

      You will actually have an easier time getting it fit with the older 5x7 lights. It’s a lot easier with those lights. You’ll use the stock bezels around your headlights. So you will only need to purchase the grill itself.

    Are you able to connect through OBD II? Did the guy that made your harness route an OBD port under the dash? Thank you

    Please remake this video without the music! It sounds like you have some really good info but I had to stop watching after two minutes because of it.
