I have a fully built Quaife diff in the rear of my Xdrive car. Everyone said I was wasting money and they were wrong. It truly changes the way a car drives and handles. 100% worth it before you throw power at a car.
How much was it to get done?
@jgjgjgj1 it wasn't cheap and you kinda just have to suck it up and forget about the money. It was 3800 for the diff. I spent about $400 extra on REM polishing of the gearset. Then $600 for install at a premier indy shop in my area.

@jgjgjgj1 diffsonline will build you a core and then you can send in your old diff after install. It's honestly and labor of love and ever since cars became a mainstream hobby, most just wanna make cheap power and throw the car away. Everyone does the same shit to these cars. I wanted to be different.

This makes it alot easier, gonna save some 👌 the car atm makes sick power already i got a recorded 11.6 quarter mile so im not chasing more speed, having that control dynamically with an LSD would bring it all together so worth it, thanks for the info!
Good vid as always, my opinion on LSD:
Get one, particularly if you want to drift.
Coming from an M135i/M140i, these cars already have a compromised rear end and can't put the stock power down properly. LSD makes a huge difference in traction and predictability. Also makes the driving experience more fun!
I think any performance oriented car should have an LSD. (FWD/RWD, it doesn't matter)
BMW agrees, they just want to upsell you to an M car.
In 2017:
M240i: £35,000
M2: £44,000
After you optioned an M240i with the M2's standard kit (H/K etc.) plus an LSD, you're not far off an M2's list price and you'd be missing out on all the suspension upgrades.

@MarkG11400 Yeah I had a Quaife in my M135i, and have the MPerf LSD in my M140i.
Lockup is more like an M car with the MPerf vs Quaife but they're both excellent compared to a stock Open.
The rear subframe kit and bushes has been on my list for a while, just still debating whether I keep spending on the 140 or go to an M3/M4 and be done with it 😅

@@azerty1604 M Perf because you're buying an entire differential and just swap it out. Plus the lockup is more predictable and more consistent.
With the Quaife you need to have your stock Open diff opened up and the ATB welded in so it ends up being more expensive plus you can't go back to stock.
I absolutely loved the way my car transformed. I have a lot of backroads in the area so it was definitely worth the money for turns
Worth noting that ML performance has them on sale right now in the UK. I purchased mine there, and had it shipped to the US last Black Friday sale. It was $2050 shipped.

I bought one there and got it shipped all the way to Australia. I paid almost a grand for shipping + tax, but it still ended up a whole grand cheaper than buying local. This is kinda stupid considering that it is apparently an Australian company that makes m perf diffs for BMW

Thank you for this video. I'm debating what the right move for me is. My goal is spirited driving. It would be nice to have the ability to drift when I'd like, but opportunities for that where I live are so limited that i wouldn't base my decision solely on that.
Still unsure which way to go - m performance or quaife, but i appreciate the info, and can't wait to chew through some more of your content! Definitely a new sub here.

Great video and knowledge 👌. I didbthe mfactory lsd in my 600hp 08 535i just last week and it makes a world of difference! I would recommend lsd to anyone who tunes their car.
I bought the Wavetrac ATB/LSD from diffsonline, it was $4000😂. I will probably post a Bimmerpost thread about it soon.

Great video, this upgrade is on my list since I really only track the car and that open diff is a weakness especially in low to mid speed chicanes where the turning and putting power down is not a good mix

I have a 440i xdrive manual, and I bought an mperformance lsd and like you said the axles were too small, but besides that my friend that works @ bmw said it may also damage the transfer case!?

Great info! Sounds like there will be a noticeable difference coming from open diff and ediff. I dont see any drawbacks especially seeing its progressive. Just to be clear. Accelerating in and of corners is achieved faster? Also, do these really have to be rebuilt over time or just more frequent gear oil changes?
yes, you can get on the throttle pedal earlier without spinning. i don't anticipate needing to rebuild but it will need regular fluid changes.
Excellent! Is turn in improved on corner entry? Or, does it sort of understeer going in but allow you to steer with throttle in the apex and out the corner? It doesn't sound like there's much of a concern with snap oversteer when compared to the torsen differences? Although, I'm sure you can get the tail out if you like but more controlled.
it's all about accelerating out of a turn

i have 2 sets of wheels. stock wheels with Michelin as4 all-seasons for daily driving. apex wheels with continental extreme contact force tires for track driving. i also did a track day on stock wheels with upgraded tires back in June. so i guess it depends on what you're referring to.
Is there a power limit for the M performance LSD? Ie if you’re pushing over a certain amount of power would you need a stronger unit?
not that i've seen. we'll see. Not a lot of people break diffs.

no bolt on m-performance option, but you can always reach out to wavetrac/quaif/etc. to see if they'd make an option to build your stock diff

the same part number works for all f2x and f3x, but only rwd.

Just ordered and have 1 on the way. The diff comes prefilled. Do you recommend changing the fluid after 1k miles or just wait the 20k-25k miles for 1st change?
i think the manual recommendation is 500 miles break in
How well does this diff perform on decel? You mention 9% is it noticeably better?
not really noticeable but it can help with trail braking
@@kern417 Ok. Don't laugh at the reason why I asked. When I used to play Grand Tourismo and Forza Motorsports I would get the adjustable LSD. I like adjusting the decel so that when I am aiming for the apex during decel it helps to keep the car under control. So I was wondering if that (9%) was noticeable with that diff you installed. You said no so I appreciate the response.
nah i understand and honestly i was curious too. i used to have a lot of movement under heavy braking so i was nervous that it would make it worse. but it's very progressive.

it's a mechanical part that is always working.
@@kern417 thank you for your fast response i have m240 with 600 whp and im losing traction to 3rd gear i have Michelin pilot 5 tire ,what semi slick tire you recommended? Will blisten b12 coils and springs will help in the traction as combo with semi slicks,

i know it's expensive and difficult for x-drive but nothing else will give you the extra grip in turns. just depends on your priorities.

Cause I think the base B48 Supra comes without an LSD, it’s an option there that you have to order

B58 Has an electronic LSD. B48 has a mechanical LSD.
Hi Kern, I've ordered an OS Giken LSD for my M140. They're built to order after you supply your VIN.
My VIN shows up as a 3.08 final drive, but this is the manual short gear ratio diff.
My car is an auto. Auto's are the 2.81.
I've put a pause on the build until I try find out why this is.
Did the auto diff come out with different final drive ratios?
I also have this issue with the vin showing that my M240i is a 3.08 even though it’s an auto. Is your M140i an early 2017 model?
@@domostructor147 No, mine is mid 2018. Part number ending in 411. Looks like it's the same one that the 135i used. This is assuming RealOEM has the correct information for my VIN which it hasn't let me down so far.
where are you entering your VIN? VIN doesn't usually record things like transmission options. i'm guessing 3.08 is just the default, but if your car is auto then it should be 2.81. For example, even in RealOEM it shows 3.08, but then it shows 2.81 underneath if you have the auto trans.

- VIN is entered in RealOEM where it asks the for the last 7 digits.
- The official part number for the diff with my VIN is (ends in 411) and that part number is for a 3.08 final drive.
- It is true that there is a listing for a 2.81 underneath but that is only for the M Performance option. No other 2.81 listings.
- I'm more than happy for you to check my VIN and see if I'm missing anything? Let me know.

Sorry, i havnt watched the vid before the coment. Great vid as always. It looks like it will wake a great diference in curves right? And its just plug and play, that is awesome. I will install it this winter. For the moment i have it stock, Im Verry happy with the car as it is, the curves, Verry good, but i whould like More greep and beter stabilitet.
this option isn't for 5-series but you can reach out to wavetrac/quaife/etc. to see if they have any options to build your diff

i dont know why BMW cant put a LSD form the factory on a car worth $60/70k. they can put all the electronic traction control gizmos, but a real limited slip is 100 times better.
if most people don't need it, it's a waste of money. at the end of the day, it's an economy car.
