    Watch our latest video: bit.ly/carbuyer...
    The latest, 10th-generation Honda Civic is well made, well equipped, practical, enjoyable to drive and a genuine alternative to other family hatchbacks. The stylised design won’t be to everyone’s taste, but the Civic is unquestionably striking and looks great in the metal. If you’re in the market for a Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf or similar, do stop by a Honda showroom to see how the Civic suits.

    I'm still baffled how Brits correlate "squidgy plastics" with build quality. Hondas are not as nice looking inside, but they will outlast VW products threefold.

      David Azpe Just reading some old comments here, is it me or this is overpriced? I mean Mazda can produce their cars with tons of features including Bose speakers, wifi and a superb media/navigation system. All Hondas come with 'speakers' as I don't find anything from them that comes with anything near as that. And the truth is I so want the 1.5 Turbo (the type R is totally overkill for roads and daily driving).

    There was potential, but the cutlines for the hatch are terrible and those bumpers! If they would just get rid of those bumpers... At least the sedan/saloon looks descent, but I'm curious to see how it will be priced in comparison to the hatch.

  • @djoetma

    Car doesn't make sense at all. They threw away the strong points of the old one (magic seats, naturally aspirated engines that were still fuel efficiënt, huge boot in the station (biggest of all C segment cars, good design).
    With this one they have quite an ugly design that a lot of C segment buyers will never go for (lease of private), no availability of a sporty engine (Type-R is too extreme), turbo engines (which is fine, but Honda's were always high RPM cars), very little smartness in terms of interior design, and an old fashioned slow and laggy media system.They simply made wrong choices. The magic seats are gone because they wanted to driver position lower and thus remove the fuel tank from under the drivers seat. Because they placed it under the passengers seats, the magic seats weren't possible anymore. Who cares about sitting lower in a Civic? Isn't it worse for keeping overview on the road? Maybe because they wanted the Civic to become more sporty? Well, then why tune the suspension for more comfort?
    Honda should've gone with two cars (several brands are offering two models in the same segment now), a Civic, which is the rational car for everyone (with high sitting position, magic seats and comfortable suspension), and an Integra (lower seating position, stiffer suspension, coupe lines), if they really wanted a car in which they could put their sporty coupé needs and ideas which seems to be the case. And why would they not offer the option for a proper sporty engine? A Type-R immediately looks like it should be in the Fast and the Furious (not to mention, costs quite a lot). It's really a car for anyone who doesn't give a f*ck about anything.
    I really thought Honda was ready to up their game after the previous generation with the quite good Accord (TLX in the US, we don't have the US Accord), Civic, and even the Legend and the announcement of the new NSX. But looking at this, I'm quite disappointed.

    I've just purchased a 2019 1.5 Sport and am extremely pleased with my choice of car. The criticisms in this review are of course personal. If you're looking for something different from the rather bland Golf then this should appeal. The car is a dream to drive, quick enough, comfortable (8.5hrs to Scotland), well screwed together and the CVT auto box is excellent IMO. I averaged 49 mpg to Scotland. It's not often I have 4 people in the car so head room is not an issue. The boot is fantastic and one of the major reasons I bought the car as I need a lot of space for hobbies, runs to the tip etc.. By the way, the suspension is on the firm side but pretty good on the appalling Scottish roads, and the steering is spot on. I do not have any gripes, after all, I chose it :O)

      That's what I thought until now that I'm looking to buy one, and find out that both petrol engines have terrible design flaws. Namely the wet timing belt in the 1.0 that wears prematurely and leaves debris in the oil that clog the engine's "arteries" inducing catastrophic failures, or the 1.5 with is notorious oil dilution problems, where gasoline seeps through the cylinder walls and mixes with the oil, rising its level and also inducing premature wear and possible catastrophic failures, on top of a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin. Looks like the diesel is the only good option, but they sold very few of them and stopped producing it in 2020

    I love the leather interior (standard on 1.0 Executive and 1.5 Prestige) , but you can't, at least not in my country, order it with with the double centre exhaust pipes (only on 1.5 Sport & 1.5 Sport +). It's such a shame, I want both and it drives me nuts I can't have!

    • @christophthomson
      @christophthomson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly the problem I'm having. I have decided in favour of the leather interior, in part because the cloth quality didn't feel so good.

    • @FrightfulAccountant
      @FrightfulAccountant 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      arthenor007 and that is been put in a nice way! The cloth reminds me of the inside of nike running shoes!
      I am still saving for another year, but i will probably go the same way as you. And maybe i will find an aftermarket solution to tweek the standard pipes...

    • @christophthomson
      @christophthomson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I asked the salesperson about fitting the sport model pipes to the prestige model, but it's not possible because the trunk on the prestige model has a bigger storage space beneath the trunk floor (where the exhaust pipes run in the sports model). Perhaps there will be some creative aftermarket solutions nonetheless, or Honda will consider adding leather to the sports model for their 2019 revision.

    • @FrightfulAccountant
      @FrightfulAccountant 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn =(
      What realy bothers me, is their are no exhaust pipes at all visible on versions like the prestige. It just does not look right without... Maybe if there would be a not too expensive and nice way to make a least the left and right pipes visible. I am afraid just putting add ons on to let them poke from under the pumper will not cut the musterd, though I will look up into that. I am afraid I would either need to cut in the rear bumper or replace it with something aftermarket to make the pipes visible...
      Well I have still a year to go, so lets hope Honda just puts the leather option on the 1.5 sport, or the pipes on the 1.0 prestige. Engine wise both the 1.0 or the 1.5 would be good enough for what I do so that no point for me. A bigger engine is always fun, but 130 horses is enough. The car just has to look right, both from outside and inside!

    The Skoda Octavia should be compared to an Accord not a Civic. The Magic Seats have gone because you can only have them with Torsion Beam rear suspension. This new Civic has Fully Independent rear suspension. I know which I would rather have! The handling is just so much better than the previous 2 generation Civics. Sacrificing a bit of space for suspension mounts in the back means you can’t have magic seats.

I has lost much of the 'power of dreams' factor and that is a real shame, not even the superb new engines, transmission and road handling can make up to.

    I disagree about the location of the driver information, it was intuitive unless you were a stuck-in-a-mould journalist. I couldn't understand why other cars didn't have similar displays. The latest CVT is far better than I expected, I liked it. But the car is extremely ugly and the Magic Seats were part of the essential Civic package.
    I was in Chicago recently where the US version of the Civic is plentiful and looks far better in the booted version. The ugly areas of plastic uselessness in the front and rear of the Civic hatch are more restrained in the US Civic and the overall shape is more pleasing. The US award-winning Honda Accord is also a very good looking car and I think would do well in the UK.
    After 18 years of owning Hondas, since driving the latest (top of the range) I decided not to get the Civic and instead bought a Golf GTi with Performance Pack and DSG. It was similar cost, has 1000 miles on the clock, insurance is compatible and the car is so far ahead of the Civic it feels like a 21st Century car. Plus residuals will be around 50%.
    Like their F1 engineering team, I think Honda have taken a lurch backwards since 2012. Bring back all the beautiful cars they used to make.

    There must have been a fight in the design room at honda and an accident happened to their drawings then they said lets just go with it and ended up with that rear end. Just terrible.

    I have the 1.5l turbo in Australia. Assumedly all models have the best safety feature not mentioned in the review, the passenger outside window mirror has a camera and when indicating in that direction the view of the lane shows up on the central screen. Has markers for depth and width so great for lane changes to see cars (and bikes) in the blind spot. Can’t understand why this was not reviewed. I miss the magic seats from my prior hatch but the bigger reversing screen, left lane camera and Android Auto are winners for me.

    The colour of the car was supposed to be Red however by excessive colour grading you turned it to Orange. Why false information?

    Driving position is a lot lower than the previous civic, the way honda did this is by moving the fuel tank from underneath the drivers seat as in the 2 previous civic’s too under the rear bench hence no magic seat arrangement, personally i’d much rather have the lower driving position

    I don't think this car is beautiful. But Golf and Astra are some of the most boring cars lookswise you can find. Also I just had this Civic out for a test drive, Honda simply makes cars more fun to drive than anyone else, and their gearboxes and handling are second to none.
