I never would have thought when clicking on this video that it would leave such an impact on me. My dad passed away 11 years ago now when I was just 20 and I never really got to have an adult relationship with him. What Frank did with this album hoes beyond the art. He did something nobody had done in the music industry, that I know of at least.
This guy managed to take years to make an album with Universal's money. Then turns into a video album called Endless. The next day his contract ended and he didn't resign. He then took the album Blond and release it as an iTunes exclusive and makes Apple pay him for it, obviously.
He screwed Universal over so bad but he technically gave them a last album. He convinced them it was. They weren't expecting him to release another album a few days later. He got Universal and Apple essentially pay for the same album. Genius.
Fuck the music industry. I love him for that alone.

I remember the day this album first came out. I was a junior in high school. I just got my first car. A 2005 Ford Mustang convertible was my first car. I had the windows open, it was cold outside, I was blaring the album from the beginning. Pink + White turned on while I was on Hayden road, I was bopping my head to the music and some guy pulled up in the lane next to me smiling and asked “is that the new Frank album?”. Such a perfect moment. We were both jamming in traffic to Pink + White for a short 30 secs.
This album absolutely obliterates me. It reminds me of my first love; everything was perfect during those days. Convertibles, cool weather, mental and physical health good, go to work and then hangout with the girl I loved and drive home bumping this album at 2 am with the top down, repeat. God this album makes me feel so good and bad, best album.

There are multiple dualitys in this album. It's chronologicaly created starting with when he was young to when he is older. Which is why In the beginning his voice is pitched up. The first half of the album is the day and the second half is the night. You really have to listen to the album as one complete thing instead of separate songs. The dissect podcast completely breaks this album apart. There's so much to this album. It's literally my favorite album of all-time.

      It’s not that deep 😂
Nikes was the first song he released from the album to give people a taste after a long hiatus, but he wanted to mess with people who have been waiting for something from him so he made them hear a new song and at the same time wait to hear his voice even longer just teasing them.
I’ve seen a lot of comments saying the same thing about age? Must have come from the same podcast?
If you need d*ck I got you?
      Pour up for ASAP?
Said she need a ring like Carmelo?
Must be on that white like othello?
      Woo fucking buzzin?
Younger? What a year before the album?
I mean if you care to elaborate on how he is younger? Other than a high pitch… I’m open minded to see that but that’s a stretch for me. The subject matter doesn’t scream “younger” to me.

I know you guys won’t see this, but to comment on “needing several listens” to get into this album, you all touched on why that is several times. The album is unpredictable, and the brain releases endorphins to reward itself for pattern recognition. So basically, no endorphins on the first listen, because the brain is almost penalizing itself for not knowing where anything’s going. After several listens, though, your brain not only releases the endorphins for recognizing the patterns, but it gives an extra boost to you for knowing the patterns of something so abstract. Next thing you know, you have one of the most popular albums of all time. Everyone’s brains patting themselves on the back for feeling like they understand something on a deeper level than the average joe could.

It's crazy how this album came out in 2016, I listened to it non-stop for probably a year till I got a bit tired of it. He dropped singles after that and I loved those as well, but overall I didn't listen to frank as often as i did when i was younger. I recently secured a blonde vinyl copy that dropped on his site and decided to revisit the album + endless. I am now once again on a frank binge as I realize this person made something so timeless and conceptual, that even this dad recognized influences/samples. Someone who has never heard his stuff before. Frank ocean really dropped one of the greatest albums ever made. It's so impactful and beautifully crafted in a way that it could really strike the listeners ears in the most profound and emotional way. Thank you so much frank for what you blessed us with. If I had to sum it up: it sounds like a very personal album and like he is paying tribute to people that were in and out , or are currently still in his life; and he's also experimenting musically between a minimalist and maximalist approach but leveraging his strengths which is his vocals, and putting a heavy emphasis on lyrics; and then you can very much hear the gospel, R & B, and psychedelic influences.

"This album is about identity. The album name is blond(e). The feminine spelling of the word is 'Blonde' which reflects the tone of the first half of the album which is light, happily melodic and has imagery of summer. Then, in 'Nights' there is a beat switch which is exactly halfway in the album (at 30minutes in the hour long project). This beat switch signifies the volta in tone to the other (masculine) side - 'Blond' The feel is much more brutal, delves into his character and is harsh in it's realities and ideas. This duality in the album of the both sides mirrors his sexuality, identity and mentality throughout." - copyed from another video but i love this comment

without fail, this album gives me a feeling no other record can every single time i listen to it. even just hearing the snippets with your commentaries is hitting the same way the whole record did when i first put it into my ears. this album is quite literally a soundtrack to beautiful, emotionally potent life experiences. even without paying attention to the lyrics, if you let the music absorb you, you get transported to a different world. my first experience with blonde was in this seaside town late at night during the summer ending my senior year of high school. my girlfriend at the time was upset with me, so i drove up to this place i had newly developed a love for because of its gorgeous scenery. i spontaneously let this record play despite not expecting to enjoy it in the slightest, and it changed my life permanently. it allowed me to find this equilibrium of stimulation in the nuances of me driving alone, swallowed by darkness, right next to the atlantic, so unsure of where my life was going to go. and i think thats why its such a trip whenever i replay it, because im able to tap into the somber yet lovely emotions of change and youthful confusion. ever since then i treat myself to solo sessions walking around places that captivate me, allowing blonde to consume me for the hundredth time over, envisioning the soundscape in the back of my mind. this record is a perfect balance of order/power/control and absurdity/disorder/chaos. it walks with those things so accurately that every second is engaging and strikes a chord in your heart, much like a film score about your own unique humanity.

The beat switch in "Nights" actually marks the exact half-point of the album (30 min in), essentially dividing up the album into two parts. To me, the first part of the album signifies the exploration of his identity along with the theme of falling love. The change in this song can mark the change in Frank's mindset as it transitions into his deeper, darker thoughts riddled with frustration, desperation, and heartbreak.
Anyway, this album will always be my favorite album of all-time and Frank Ocean has forever left a mark on the industry with Blonde.

The thing about Frank Ocean is he always been different in terms of his musical direction. He could've just go with the normal RNB direction, the guaranted-succes "verse-chorus-bridge-repeat" like everyone else did, but he didnt. He knows exactly how to play with the instrumental parts, his voice plays, the effects and stuff which make every each of his track different. Also the simplicity of not putting too much efforts on his vocal part tho he had a very good voice but keeping up with a good instrumental line at the back to make the song even more interesting, not just the vocal part. He's an absolute genius.

I would recommend Nostalgia, ULTRA. It has more familiar sampling and less experimentation with vocals and production. It quite literally saved my life and always brings back mixed feelings for me, most of which are good! Channel Orange is also a good one if you plan to continue through his discography.
This album definitely grows on you with each listen, and seems to touch a lot of people when they're at their lowest. It's an emotional support album for everyone I know who has also listened to it. So It definitely means a lot to so many.
Frank Ocean means a lot to me, and I am admittingly sensitive when it comes to him. I appreciate your reaction and your dad's willingness to listen to all kinds of music with an open mind.

Only 2 songs in and I love how much your dad appreciates small details. Tearing up at this and wishing I could show my dad music like I did 10 years ago. Amazing stuff. Keep it up forever. 💕
