That repetitive vocal flip is so incredibly difficult; ESPECIALLY because of how close the two notes are in that bridge. So much control and I’m obsessed.
I used to do that kind of vocal stuff all the time (yodelling) and annoy all my family, now I realized its actually a hard skill and that its super cool I can do Chappells picture you vocals flips here with relatively low effort
This is one of my favorite songs of hers. The first time I actually listened to her music was in this tiny desk video. I'm obsessed with tiny desk performances and have their notifications on. When Chappell's episode went live, I immediately stopped everything I was doing to watch it. I'd seen some people talking about her online, and I figured that her appearing on tiny desk was a sign that I should finally check her stuff out. I'm so glad I did. She literally changed my life - I decided to go back to school to finish my degrees in Anthropology & Theater, I'm writing/producing my very first short film this Fall, and I'm working on my performance portfolio again. All of it was because she inspired me. The costumes, the makeup, the acting, the VOCALS, all of it - it made me want to create again, after 3 years of creating nothing. I'll be forever grateful for that.
I’m happy you mentioned the old school country and western influence. That’s exactly what I was hearing in this song. I think her vibrato also recalls old country and western singing too.
I love how you didn't interrupt the performance while you were listening in the beginning. A lot of people do that, but you waited to hear the whole thing before dissecting it!
Chappel is the only artist that sounds like an old recording (I mean it in a good way!). When she sings "down my chest, when I thiiink of you..." at the beginning (minute 1.37), I literally thought I was listening to a decades old recording. And I have never had that feeling/image with any other artist. She's incredible.
Every aspect of this is, as you say, 10 out of 10. And the presentation, the costuming? Down to the lipstick on her teeth, it's all thought through to craft this perfect piece of art.
And the luxe orchestration in a tiny office space. These ladies are hella professional, extremely talented goddesses. Way to blow the roof off Tiny Desk!! I'm a big fan of Chappell. Thank you for doing these videos. Being a 62 year old , I felt a little weird enjoying her music. But she is so talented and the music so infectious. The lyrics are adult, but not used to shock. Rather more to describe here experiences. She really is a breath of fresh air.

The themes of her music are adult, but she sings this with such raw honesty it comes across as vulnerable and relatable rather than salacious. I find her really refreshing and I can't wait to see what she does next.
It's not about being brave for her. She makes those choices in part based upon her vast knowledge of popular music. This album references Patsy Cline, Rocky Horror, The Mammas and the Pappas, Lana, Madonna, Gaga, and on and on and on. Watch her sing her own songs when she was sixteen. She's scary. Who brings all those performers to Tiny Desk? On Pink Pony Club she replaces the guitar solo with violin. I could go on, but the point is there is intentionality, a self awareness, in what she does, every little thing. Love your vocal analysis.
If you enjoy her yodeling, I’d highly recommend listening to her song Guilty Pleasure. The song truly takes you on a journey and is the perfect expression of her artistic courage. I’d love to hear your reaction!! New listener, btw! I found you through a Wicked review and immediately started deep diving. I appreciate what you bring to this space so much!
Yayyy! loving your reactions! Please react to her performace “Red Wine Supernova” - Chappell Roan (LIVE on The Late Show), and also to Her full album!! lots off love
@TimWelchVocalStudio - keep doing yourself (and us) the extreme pleasure of sourcing from Chappell’s variety of performances that she’s compiling. She’s dropped some insanely rad vids as well, her performances (VMAs, VEVO, Lollapalooza, Tiny Desk, Late Nite circuit…) are truly a treasure to hone in on HOW she’s delivering so much power & heart while being completely, enviably authentic.🤘🥰🫶
The words, the music and the vocals are Fused perfectly. I think the yodeling part and the dense notes After are clearly the musical metaphor of an orgasm. She Is so cool and clever!
So many times I would’ve killed to have been a fly on the wall at the Tiny Desk concert studio, or even a crushed cigarette butt in a robust wig.😂❤🪩🎻🥁 4:27 Another fantastic reaction, Tim! You’ve dialed into Chappell’s multi-faceted artistry so nicely & have such great technical, seasoned takes on what makes her so sensational (from simple to very nuanced).🤘🎙️👏
2:47 harmony is one of my favorites on record. Tim, I couldn’t agree more with everything you have said about Chappell in your videos. I loved watching your reaction vids. Chappell’s voice feels like the bigger crayon box. She just has more colors to choose from. Red Wine Supernova has been on repeat for weeks now. I haven’t been that obsessed with a song in 25yrs.

"Picture you" es, sin duda, mi canción preferida de Chappell, y las amo todas, imagínate lo que me emociona. Pero la teatralidad que consigue en este directo es impresionante. Fíjate en el comienzo: escribe un mensaje de texto como diciendo " ahora voy a hablar de lo más íntimo de mí y no importa que estéis aquí mirando". Lanza el móvil y empieza la magia. Magistral. Dónde estabas Chappell Roan?!!!!
Oh, that's what she's talking about! The lyric "So tell me now, all your perversions...am I doing research, in a mini skirt, at the library in your hometown?" is an absolutely perfect little package.
I feel that the western country influence is really important to the image she portrays throughout rise and fall of a midwest princess. Cowboy imagery has been building a lot of steam in indie/pop recently and this feels like a very effective and personal culmination. Plus, its just so enjoyable to listen to and distinctive. Today i was listening to her song guilty pleasure, and thinking its a damn shame she didnt do it at tiny desk. Its even more yodel-y, but there arent so many recordings of her doing it live :(
another great analysis. how about a whole tiny desk breakdown song by song? when i watched it the first time, i felt like i was hit in the head with a frying pan. it's like watching a dream. even watching her check her flip phone between songs is baller.
I really appreciate your reactions and the usage of textbook terminology to describe techniques. A lot of other people use terms like mixing and registers but it’s refreshing to hear the “scientific” words!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! You nailed it again, when you said that music is too "perfect" nowadays and it's lost its "personality!" Give me an album from the 70s, when the band was actually playing together in a studio, and I'm as happy as a clam. I love that imperfection. This is why Millennials (I'm old Gen X) are so obsessed with LP's-- they don't want the imperfections digitized out of the music!
Her voice and vocal style reminds me of many different artists but in this song in particular she reminds me so much of Linda Ronstadt. I have yet to see or hear anyone make that comparison so I might be off but there’s just something about her voice in this song that is so similar to Ronstadt. I can’t even quite put my finger on what or why, but I really hear it in this song.
First time I watched the Tiny Desk concert, the second she started with the low notes for Picture You, I was swept away. Can’t wait to see you react to more of her stuff! Very informative to mention Wicked as a comparison, I was a teen when it was new and listened a ton to my CD at the time. It was a huge impression on me about what singing should be like! I still don't know much but I appreciate more different styles now.
Chappell- YOU are better than most gal singers out there. Beautiful voice, style, presentation, all of it exceptional. I am so happy you are moving on up. You have put together a winning combination of band members, all females, bravo. I hope you do well and stay cool. Blessings and best wishes always. 💋
you NEED to react to guilty pleasure by chappell roan! it’s easily her most vocally challenging and impressive song. she literally yodels and she doesn’t even perform it anymore because it’s so hard on her voice
At 7 minutes, you talk about her slides sound a little like older style country. Her artist name is partly based on a very old country classic called "The Strawberry Roan" so this probably a good part of her influence too.
my laptop speakers broke and I'm playing this on my big ass stereo and I wonder just how entertaining the moaning interludes are for everyone else in and out the house
I’d love to hear what you think about her older music. It’s VERY different. I haven’t seen anyone talking about it but it plays on my Spotify shuffle and I think it’s really interesting to listen to the different sounds and vibes she was going for early on. To me it shows a relatable evolution as she was trying to find the sound that works best for her.
As far as which Chappell song to react to next, it really doesn't matter, you're gonna need to do all 13 other songs off the masterpiece that is The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, plus the other post-album single, The Subway. You'll WANT to, first, because like us, you're already hooked. And second, every one of those songs is worthy of an individual reaction vid. So two down, 14 to go. You're going to relish every one.
I think you would really enjoy watching the live cover of “Ultralight Beam” by Stan Walker ft. the Levites The harmonies by the background singers are amazing and Stan Walker is incredibly talented.
Idk if this is the same thing because the context is so different. But when you were talking about how she doesn't move her mouth at all because it creates to many variables, it reminded me of Cristina Deutekom's Queen of the night aria and how when she sang those extreeeemely high notes she's not moving her mouth at all.
And I’ll add I’ve loved Chappell since seeing her for the first time on NPR’s Tiny Desk. It’s quite the experience to witness a cultural phenomenon bloom! Her voice, maybe the yodeling (you helped me hear it), reminded me of Allie Sherlock. Could you also react to her please?
Her singing is about the vocal quality. Its about the expression of the queer experience. She has struck the tuning fork of the queer community. We have never had this before.
Have you ever listened to the Bayati shiraz kanan at the Xaribulbul Musiqi Festival? It's the most incredible vocal performance and it makes me emotional, though I don't know the language.

Hi Tim! sorry can you react to Angel Of My Dreams (Slow, Angelic, Dramatic) version by JADE, she was a member of the girl group Little Mix, shes an amazing singer, there’s a lot of musicality complexities and great vocals! i think youre gonna love that live performance!
Re: nickname for fans. The interviewer in her January Capital Buzs interview used "Chappellains," which I kinda liked. Anything chosen should probably get approved by her first, though. Growing up her family went to church I think she said 3 days a week, so she might not be big on that one.
I don't know of one. But I discovered her only in February through her Colbert show perf. of Red Wine Supernova. In March I bought the cd and a ticket to her show here in Richmond. And have listened to relatively little else since. But she has dedicated fans that go back to 2017 and earlier. She was playing last fall, first leg of the Midwest Princess tour, to shows of still just 100s to 1.5k people (in Richmond in May we were 6.5k, but could have sold 4 or 5k more), and those early adopters may know of a name that I don't. Enjoy! Because song for song there hasn't been an album that approaches Midwest Princess in decades. I have trouble thinking of one that does, of original music/no covers, period.
That repetitive vocal flip is so incredibly difficult; ESPECIALLY because of how close the two notes are in that bridge. So much control and I’m obsessed.

you NEED to react to guilty pleasure by chappell roan! it’s easily her most vocally challenging and impressive song. she literally yodels and she doesn’t even perform it anymore because it’s so hard on her voice
On it!
At 7 minutes, you talk about her slides sound a little like older style country. Her artist name is partly based on a very old country classic called "The Strawberry Roan" so this probably a good part of her influence too.
I think you'd enjoy reacting the Laufey's tiny desk concert. She has a beautiful voice and mixes pop with jazz.
@@teszter704 Oo…never heard of her!
@@TimWelchVocalStudio she won a grammy last year for her album, too 😊
Oh you’ll have a fantastic time listening to Laufey, Tim!
my laptop speakers broke and I'm playing this on my big ass stereo and I wonder just how entertaining the moaning interludes are for everyone else in and out the house
Baahaahaa!!!! 🤣🤣
Was waiting on you to do this one!
I’ll check it out. 🙏🏼✨
Clock that tea
As far as which Chappell song to react to next, it really doesn't matter, you're gonna need to do all 13 other songs off the masterpiece that is The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, plus the other post-album single, The Subway.
You'll WANT to, first, because like us, you're already hooked. And second, every one of those songs is worthy of an individual reaction vid.
So two down, 14 to go.
You're going to relish every one.
@@bartlebyscrivener2980 lol, I’m in!
I think you would really enjoy watching the live cover of “Ultralight Beam” by Stan Walker ft. the Levites
The harmonies by the background singers are amazing and Stan Walker is incredibly talented.
Awesome thanks!
Idk if this is the same thing because the context is so different. But when you were talking about how she doesn't move her mouth at all because it creates to many variables, it reminded me of Cristina Deutekom's Queen of the night aria and how when she sang those extreeeemely high notes she's not moving her mouth at all.
@@jiffyviv5341 yes!
Yeeee❤🎉 I was waiting for this
Great job on the reaction! More Chappell roan! And as for what’ll to call Chappell fans? How about chappellronis? Haha
Haha! Funny, love it!
Great analysis! Nice to see someone who knows what they’re talking about lol
@@smurfrise ✨🙏🏼
8:32 Yayyyyyy yodeling gets mentioned!
This particular song reminds me of the brilliant Mary Margaret O'Hara.
TYSM!!! I asked you to react to Picture You
TYSM, I'm so happy, I love it
Soo good! Thank you. ✨🙏🏼
You should listen to her song guilty pleasure, amazing yodels in there too it's a very underrated song
Appreciate the music more with your analysis! Thanks

Could you also react to her please?
you should react to her song “guilty pleasure”!! she said it’s her favourite song but despise performing it live but you should still check it out!!!
You should react to Mazzy Star!! Their lead vocalist is so bewitching
Her singing is about the vocal quality. Its about the expression of the queer experience. She has struck the tuning fork of the queer community. We have never had this before.
Omg yessssss!!!!🎉❤❤❤
love your reactions! can you react to one of her red wine supernova live performances?
Coming!
This song really reminds me of Sam Phillips and some of She & Him
Have you ever listened to the Bayati shiraz kanan at the Xaribulbul Musiqi Festival? It's the most incredible vocal performance and it makes me emotional, though I don't know the language.
No, I haven’t heard it!
Great reaction. New fan
I would love to see you react to the live version of Yebba’s My Mind.
@@missjacquelineo I love that song! I’ve already heard it, but I may listen through it with you all anyway. There is so much going on in that one. ✨🙏🏼
♡ Draw the blinds, light every candle

Oh, I need you around
I'm getting close now
Do you picture me like I picture you?
Am I in the frame from your point of view?
Do you feel the same? I'm too scared to say
Half of the things I do when I picture you
So tell me now (tell me now)
All your perversions
Am I doing research in a mini skirt
At the library in your hometown?

Hi Tim! sorry can you react to Angel Of My Dreams (Slow, Angelic, Dramatic) version by JADE, she was a member of the girl group Little Mix, shes an amazing singer, there’s a lot of musicality complexities and great vocals! i think youre gonna love that live performance!
This sounds like a respectful homage to Lana Del Ray to me. Love this song so much. It’s an updated emotional “she bop” for this generation
Check out
Red Wine Supernova
This song reminds me of “You Were Meant For Me” by Jewel
Yes!
19:06 we usually call ourselves lesbians
lol! 😄🙏🏼✨
what she's talking about...is probably what you thought it was ;)
🙈
I've got it! Not just Cyndi Lauper or Kate Bush, but a sprinkling of Bernadette Peters too!
Yes!
if you like the yodeling, highly recommend you listen to her song guilty pleasure
Ok, her lower tone here reminds me of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Ugh, we need a Chapelle cover.
react to Naked in Manhattan next
This one reminds me of Patsy Cline.
Re: nickname for fans. The interviewer in her January Capital Buzs interview used "Chappellains," which I kinda liked.
Anything chosen should probably get approved by her first, though. Growing up her family went to church I think she said 3 days a week, so she might not be big on that one.
@@bartlebyscrivener2980 interesting, makes sense. So there is no official one that you know of then?
Check out Ruby Friedman tour some serious pipes, if you're into redhead divas. I'd live to hear some analysis
Always assumed the intro to Pink Pony Club is a head nod/homage to the queer anthem; I will survive. It’s a hilarious/playful bait and switch.
Also, look up her cover of Elton John’s “Your Song.” I would love to see your reaction to that one! 💜
Oo!
@@TimWelchVocalStudio It’s on her TH-cam from a few years ago. 💜
