Rx glasses. Mostly just those I wear regularly. Another pair for longer rides etc. Used to have transitioning lenses. Now I also have a "sporty" pair with magnetic tinted/polaroid clip-ons - that works relatively well, but is far from ideal - I probably won´t get another pair of this kind, will rather go back to transitioning.
contact lenses. A setup like your Oakley could work, but the FOV is pretty narrow with the inner prescription lens. For multi-day trips I take dailies and wipe my fingers with wet wipes before putting them on.
I've just been riding with my Rx spex, but I've been thinking about this for a long time. Haven't found the right pair, and I'm a bit leery of buying a spendy maybe-it'll-fit-my-equestrian-head pair on faith and wishful thinking. Mebbe I'll hit Roka... BTW, a pair of readers is boss when something fiddly arises. thanks!
When I lived in northern latitudes like you are at in Portland, photocromatics were great. Then I moved to west Texas and with no trees or shade for miles, they just don’t get dark enough to properly make riding comfortable.
I've been using oakley flak for about 20 yrs and I get my Rx photochromic. On the Flak 2.0, but still a bit oldschool design. Photochromic is great for trails with a lot of tree cover and also for long days that end in a pub ride in the evening.
Hey Dustin, Great video as always :-). One thing to look out for wrt photochromic. They have to sacrifice range of darkness, they cannot cover the full range from very dark to very light. So.. I have several pairs :-), I use the lower range for cycling (for the Oh Dark Thirty starts), but use the higher range ones for skiing. I prefer polarized and just deal with my cameras (note the smartphones have very high tech screens that are not impacted!). My favorite glasses are made by Oakley and Julbo. Final note, you are young, :-) have you seen a high end opthamologist to discuss options so you do not need prescription? That would be life changing, btw. Thanks again for a wonderful informative video! btw, there is a whole separate topic on color of the lenses, which is 'better' (or more accurately stated, the tradeoffs)!
I have julbo ones that is cat 0-3 something like 87% to 12% of light is coming though. I guess for skiing in the mountains you are need cat 4 but at sea level while xc skiing in bright sun i am ok with cat 3
Rudy Project "Fotonyk" user here, with the Rx insert. Using the same frame for more than 2 years now, have both dark-mirror lenses and the photochromic, so far so good. Swapping lenses and having to clean up between the Rx insert and the inside of the lens is a pain though...
I wear prescription photochromic all the time, it saves me having to carry multiple pairs of glasses. My Ray Ban frames have carbon fibre arms, are super light and stay put all the time. Those Roka frames look really good, might look into them for my next pair.
I wear Adidas Evil Eye Half Rims from Austria. They come in a variety of fixed tints with a snap in carrier for prescription lenses. The carrier does NOT move around.
Photochromic surely is the way to go, no need to think about what lens to pop in your sunnies. Massive kudos for the Rob Roskopp board! That was my first board some 35-ish years ago 🤘🏽😎
I wear Rudy Project Rydon RXs and they are excellent. With photochromic lenses, these have become my any time day or night riding glasses, my work safety glasses, and my all day every day glasses. One little gripe is that they don’t get dark in the car, as they rely on the uv to make them dark and uv is filtered out by your car windows. I’ve been thinking about getting another pair of dark (non photochromic) ones just for driving duty. They aren’t cheap. But they are so good. And They are so very adjustable with the wire core nose pads and temples. Far more so than the molded plastic of Oakley and most other glasses brands. Rudy Project is top notch!
After losing prescription sunglass's working trail or riding trail I now always go with the gas station variety or better, the Dollar store. Great looking glasses though and very informative vid.
I've got a set of Bolle that I got from RXSport in the UK - they're bolle RX lenses and I've got varifocal in there... I've got a very strong + prescription and have spent years just putting up with what I could get for wearing on the bike. These are hands down the best riding glasses/lenses combo I've ever had and the first sports specific specs I've had that don't feel like a compromise in performance or my vision.
I need bifocals and they are hard to find in a cycling specific frame. Solution: $6 plastic aviator frames from zenni optical with photochromic bi focal lenses. ~$150 out the door.
Will stick with my Rudy Project flip-ups, thank you very much. Dorky? You bet. Do they work? Far better than photochromics which (as others have noted) neither get dark enough for really bright light, nor light enough when it's dark. I wear them for anything outdoors: riding, driving, even just commuting when I have to walk 10 minutes in the bright sun.
I’d also add that the weight of the frame + prescription lenses is quite important. I got a smith prescription set up and the weight of the frame and lens was so much heavier than my daily glasses that the bridge of my nose would get quite sore after a day of wearing. I switched to a prescription Maui Jim (very norm/dad core) with much better results. I did just place an order for Oakley Sylas with photochromic lenses so I don’t have to think about switching between my regular glasses and sunglasses if I’m out and about
My go to is julbo ultimate photochromic cat 0-3 lens and anti-fog - very comfortable and good side vision on bike. Lifestyle/run/hike is julbo Powell cat 3 polarized lens. Also have a julbo blast with cf3 lens (also cat 3) not really like the frame comfortwise - it is kinda push to much on the ears if used over long periods of time - wear them in dusty/windy conditions since they’re tight to face and stop sand from my eyes. All non prescriptions
I have been using Oakley Flak 2.0 RX version since 2017. Just broke a lens and am trying to decide whether to just get a new set of lenses in my new RX or go for a whole new set of glasses. Seems that none of the 'shield style' glasses that are so popular generally can't be done in RX... And the Jawbreakers have been around since before the Flak. I would love the mountaineering style glasses, but my road rides involve pacelines and people that are way too close, so I can't lose my peripheral vision.
Prescription without photochromic is what I've found to work the best. We live in Idaho, so we use them for various sports in the summer and in the winter. Since we play in the snow the photochromic goes dark from the brightness of the snow even at night. So my best set up is clear prescription glasses and several pairs of prescription sunglasses. Also, my experience with photochromic is that they don't go dark in your car because of the UV on the windshield is my understanding. It's been a few years since I've had a pair of photochromic lenses, maybe they've changed this? Rock on Dustin!
I have a pair of RX sun glasses. Maybe you would call them wrap around? They help keep the wind from hitting the side of my eyes and aggravating my dry eye condition. They’re basically one step before going full goggles.
Alright homie, hope we connect on this. I'm 1:04 in, and we haven't talked about Protection category (High Mass or High Velocity, both matter at 25+ mph with rocks and trees) - Looking forward to it. And yes....RX eyewear with safety ratings that not only cover your eyes, but protect them. Like a helmet for your eyes. Seems important enough.
Thanks for doing this Dustin! So hard to find a good set of prescription sport frames; my favourite so far is definitely the Ombraz with dark tint. Going to order a set of Dolomites for clear RX night riding lenses now. Cheers from Sydney.
I hate wearing glasses, but, have too. This was helpful. Oh yeah I do need glasses in spring and summer when the gnats are gnasteeeee and seem to have a craving for getting in your eyeballs. Excellent as usual.
I wore contacts for quite some time but find them a tad uncomfortable. I also had some RX inserts but they were garbag: made the frames heavy and slide down, would mist up and catch dirt, just not a great option. My go to now are a pair of Tifosi Amok direct lens photochromics. A bit pricey here in the UK but for almost all of my riding they have me covered. Look a bit full on when off the bike but they look fine when on it - I find they just do the job well.
I primarily wear rx glasses that have a color tint (I've got a set of pink, and a set of yellow lenses). I tend to wear these as my everyday glasses but they work great on the bike as well. The only time I find myself wearing contacts is during snow storms and then I wear regular goggles. Sweet Roskopp deck.
Having the need for a prism in my eye prescription, it limits the type of frames, as frames with a pronounced wrap will not work. But switching to a full face helmet with goggles, I can simply use my narrow frame everyday seeing glasses, worn under the goggles. Thanks Dustin for the video.
Need prescription sunglasses with single vision photocromatic lenses that are more blade style. I need thick frames around the lenses - specifically no frame at the top. The frame at the top blocks vision when riding on a tri bike or an areodynamic position. I can't find anything. We like the Oakley EV Zero, but can't get it in prescription.
I need glasses for reading. I wear non prescription cycling glasses with Hydrotac lenses so that I can read my Garmin when following a route. Turns non prescription lenses into bi focal’s. (Sort of.)
Oakley Holbrook with Prescription Photochromic lenses. Nice for when I start just before sunrise and end with the sun out. Stay on tight and are lightweight.
On the subject of gear...I'm wondering if you could do a saddle bag or tool wrap roundup? The Outvi Possm and the Blackburn Switch Wrap seem like particularly interesting alternatives to the traditional everything bouncing around type saddlebags. Great stuff as always.
Ordered and paid for Oakley Clifdens from my local optometrist. But they just told me my prescription is too high to fit. 😢 I’m so bummed. My left eye is -7.5
Photochromic is definitely the way to go. I have some nike sport frames with polarized & photochromic lenses. One thing I always use is a croakie eyeglasses tether, so don't need to ever worry about glasses slipping due to sweat or bouncing off when I crash, not that I ever do that...
I have to wear Rx all the time, so I just use regular glasses....and for sun I wear Over Rx. They just go in front of the regular glasses. Solar Shield branded ones are $20 at CVS.
I went full meme mode and picked up some of those Pit Vipers off of Amazon. They are pretty sweet actually, but I don't love the polarized lenses, makes checking the phone, using a camera, or looking at other screens a bit harder
A great Public Service video; too little info. out there about RX options. I started out with Oakley non-prescription glasses and then just purchased RX lenses only when my eyesight got to the point of needing correction.
I like the idea of photochromatic lenses but since I mostly fatbike in winter in Alaska the cold makes them turn dark...even when it is already dark outside. Which is a lot. I have really dry eyes so I finally gave up on contacts :( and now just wear normcore (love it) prescription frames or sunglasses. I have both dark polarized for the bright days on open snow and yellow/amberish tint for more diffused light. Fogging is an issue.
DK, I can tell from recent experience that there are some sunglasses that won't accept an Rx. That last pair you reviewed a prime example - size and shape make it difficult for an Rx, which means they provide that useless insert. Best to stick with an almost flat type of lens.
Hey Dustin! Thanks for this video! I wear Rokas with their transition lenses full time while cycling and love them. I am interested in the Ombraz with the transition lenses and wanted to see how they compare to the Roka. Thanks!
Good to know about photochemical lenses. I have been contemplating on them. They look completely clear in your video and they will come in handy in Seattle winter! BUT, unfortunately my eyesights are too bad for prescription sunglasses 😭
I have oakleys but they came with a light tinted lens, after i moved to arizona i cannot use them because its so damn bright here! and I have sensitive eyes, I will get a replacement lens to use here.
Progressive lens need more attention, by age 35 most people need these, Oakly do some but could do much more, whats the best brand for progressive lens?
But do these photochromic lens go tinted even across the entirety of each lens. I've had lens where only the part of the lens that's in direct sunlight go dark (e.g. I'm driving and the sun comes through a the driver side window and only 75% only lens become tinted. I literally have to close one eye and use the one lens that didn't go tinted since it was was in the shade on the other half of my face)
I don't need prescription lenses. I am currently using Kapvoe TR90s, which you can find in many places online. $20-$30 so I have several colors, durable, look fine (like a compilation of Oakley's greatest hits), fit me perfectly, various options come with photochromic lenses if that's your jam. Say no to bootlegs.
Now: Adidas Evil Eye Halfrim Pro with Clip Waiting for: Oakley Flak 2.0 with RX Glasses from Oakley, Prizm Golf - I hope they stay in place while shredding ;)
Wow, I normally just go with whatever $20 sunglasses I can find at the gas station, but I might have to get those Xandis if they offer UV protection. One thing i've noticed is that some glasses funnel air into your eyes and dry them out as you ride. It's hard to tell which ones will do that
Important with any kind of sunglasses is the UV protection. Very cheap sunglasses i ok ften use only tinted glasses that don’t offer any UV protection at all, in fact those can even damage your eyes because due to the tinted lenses the incoming light appears less bright, so your pupils will open wide (like in the night). But because all the invisible UV light coned through your eyes can get damaged. Always check the UV protection before buying!
Hello Dustin, do you use High Index lenses on your oakley clifdens? With ny prescription the lenses is protruding 😅 Hoping that this would answered, thank you!
How did you get your pupillary distance details? Every eye doctor I have had won't share that part of the prescription making it harder to order Rx glasses online. I have tried measuring it myself but the pair I purchased through warby parker were always just a little off and gave me a headache.
I ordered some Rudy Project Rydon Slim frames with photo-chromatic prescription lenses and bifocals from Sport RX. They had me take a photo of my face, holding up a measuring guide that I printed off the website. They created the lens from that.
@@Colleenann61 Nice, I'm glad that worked for you. I have never tried SportRX. I wish the prescription would just include the pupillary distance. It seems crazy to withhold that information.
I wear contacts and those cheap Xandi joints. My eyes water a ton, so I need lots of coverage and wrap around, not something I can get with typically prescription glasses with my high index.
Unfortunately I switch between my perception glasses and non prescription Wileyx sunglasses. Love them but can’t afford to make them prescription sunglasses. But for winter I could use a ski goggle that has lens that change from clear to fully tinted. Any ideas?
I'm a big fan of the Oakley jawbreaker lenses. Switch out between a clear and dark one. Bought the lenses every 2 years when my insurance rolls over ha.
I don’t like photochromic glasses cycling as if it goes cloudy (U.K.) or stop off at a coffee shop it takes ages for them to clear. Because my eye sight is so bad, it can’t see without them. Also have dry eyes and using the Wilex X BOSS glasses for cycling as they have a gasket to block out the wind which is great for winter wind and good because they can take my strong prescription 🤔😊😊
It's a real pain in the arse when you get older and your eyes change. I used to have to wear prescription glass all the time. Now I have to take them off to read or use multifocal. This severely restricts the choice of glasses available.
I have the Roka Braaker frames with all the options. Progressive lenses, transition, UV blocker, blue blocker. Literally the Swiss Army knife of lenses. They don’t slip. Ever. Lightweight and comfortable.
Thanks for posting! Out of the prescription glasses, which had the least obstruction when doing an over-the-shoulder check for cars/lane changes/group rides/yadda?
Just FYI - photochromic lenses do not work for driving a car. They need UV light to change, and car windshield filter UV light. I learned this the hard way.
My visually challenged fam: Do you run Rx glasses or contacts for ridings?
I switch it up. Usually contacts and Smith cycling glasses, but sometimes Rx lenses in my Oakley Jawbones.
Contacts all the time - bring an extra in the frame bag just in case.
Still waiting for the DKlein X Oakley collab. That would be nice!!
OMG This would be next level!!
When I lived in northern latitudes like you are at in Portland, photocromatics were great. Then I moved to west Texas and with no trees or shade for miles, they just don’t get dark enough to properly make riding comfortable.
I don't even need rx stuff, but I watched anyway cause, well, your vids rule.
Rudy Project progressive photochromatic clear to gray and worn under the helmet straps since they're prescription
Cool suggestion will look into these!
I like the Bolle that looks like a slightly more streamlined version of the Oakley Jawbreaker. They are also perfect for vlogging while driving.
I would like to see more reviews of the Bolle prescription lens. It doesnt look like its constructed the same way Oakley does it.
Keep pumping that quality content Player!! Love it!!
Thanks Teve! Appreciate this positive bump!
@@EverythingsBeenDone I think you’re spot on with the photochrome lenses. Not to mention you got the best shit on the TH-cams. 👍👍
The only guide that I was looking for, thank you!
Glad I could help!
I've been using oakley flak for about 20 yrs and I get my Rx photochromic. On the Flak 2.0, but still a bit oldschool design. Photochromic is great for trails with a lot of tree cover and also for long days that end in a pub ride in the evening.
This is awesome, thanks Dustin!
Rudy Project Hours, which I also got from SportRx. Loving your videos, Dustin!
Always prescription glasses! Goodr with some RX photochromatic has been my go-to lately. 🤠
Rudy Project "Fotonyk" user here, with the Rx insert. Using the same frame for more than 2 years now, have both dark-mirror lenses and the photochromic, so far so good. Swapping lenses and having to clean up between the Rx insert and the inside of the lens is a pain though...
I'm rocking the Rudy Project "Cutline" with a progressive insert. I've got good at popping out the insert for cleaning, every fifth ride or so.
I use a prescription insert for my Oakley jawbreakers and have no issues using them at all.
I wear prescription photochromic all the time, it saves me having to carry multiple pairs of glasses.
My Ray Ban frames have carbon fibre arms, are super light and stay put all the time.
Those Roka frames look really good, might look into them for my next pair.
I got the POC do flow with prescription photocromatic lents from Sport RX. Love them. Just very $$$
I wear Adidas Evil Eye Half Rims from Austria.

I'm looking to buy a pair of these :)

Very nice!
The issue with photochromic lenses is that they dont work when driving since windshields filter UV
Thats what the Jawbreakers are for ;)
Smith is the best sport sunglasses, rx or any. (Anticipates feedback from Oakley fan boys ;)

Oakley Holbrook with Prescription Photochromic lenses. Nice for when I start just before sunrise and end with the sun out. Stay on tight and are lightweight.

Photocromatic do not change back to clear when it is really cold in my experience.
I have heard this but never experienced it! Best we stay out of the cold ;)
@@EverythingsBeenDone I have never been accused of being very smart 😁
I have oakleys but they came with a light tinted lens, after i moved to arizona i cannot use them because its so damn bright here! and I have sensitive eyes, I will get a replacement lens to use here.
also I love you style, I wish I was that bold!
is there a video on glasses for people with long eyelashes?
Progressive lens need more attention, by age 35 most people need these, Oakly do some but could do much more, whats the best brand for progressive lens?
Where did you make the lenses for your Jawbreak glasses?
This is a great option. Thank you for sharing!!
Now: Adidas Evil Eye Halfrim Pro with Clip
Waiting for: Oakley Flak 2.0 with RX Glasses from Oakley, Prizm Golf - I hope they stay in place while shredding ;)
Wow, I normally just go with whatever $20 sunglasses I can find at the gas station, but I might have to get those Xandis if they offer UV protection. One thing i've noticed is that some glasses funnel air into your eyes and dry them out as you ride. It's hard to tell which ones will do that
Great review!
Ombraz for me if I had to choose.
A wise Choice my friend!
i need to get on this.😁 thanks DK
Any time
Great review. I use Cocoons fitovers. Work a treat.
With ny prescription the lenses is protruding 😅
Hoping that this would answered, thank you!
Yes I do!
Think I gotta get a pair of Rokas now!
I’m sure if you ask your optometrist to give you that number, they would be happy to do so.
Which size of the Ombraz are you wearing? The regular or the XL size?
I wear contacts and those cheap Xandi joints. My eyes water a ton, so I need lots of coverage and wrap around, not something I can get with typically prescription glasses with my high index.
contacts for me, I'm a bit of a sweaty fella so my non rx sunnies end up in my helmet vents often due to fogging
Unfortunately I switch between my perception glasses and non prescription Wileyx sunglasses. Love them but can’t afford to make them prescription sunglasses. But for winter I could use a ski goggle that has lens that change from clear to fully tinted. Any ideas?
You can never go wrong with RX glasses with photochromic lenses. :)
Do the Ombraz Dolomites block your peripherals at all? Ie. Can you not see people riding beside you when cycling?
The oakley Clifdens block the peripheral vision most! Ombras no so much for me
I'm a big fan of the Oakley jawbreaker lenses.
Also have dry eyes and using the Wilex X BOSS glasses for cycling as they have a gasket to block out the wind which is great for winter wind and good because they can take my strong prescription
🤔😊😊
Does anybody offer yellow high vis prescription sports glasses?
New shades and an advert for the new Dave Grohl book. My Xmas stocking is sorted!
Out of the prescription glasses, which had the least obstruction when doing an over-the-shoulder check for cars/lane changes/group rides/yadda?
why not contacts?
That Roscop sk8 tho!! 💪😎
Just FYI - photochromic lenses do not work for driving a car. They need UV light to change, and car windshield filter UV light. I learned this the hard way.
