Rick had a handful of hits and is written off as a teen idol. I think "Cry For Help" is really good, mature and shows off his strong voice best.

Rick himself is amazed at how well this song is still received by people ,a nd that it became a Joke/Prank Meme
Even now he still sings and do stuff, and his voice just got even smoother and Deeper with age, he is a bonified artist.
He's also somehow friend with The Foo Figthers, and even was invited as a guest a couple of times in their shows to sing along with them.
I know this song by heart, cause it was one of my mom's favorite, so each night when i was gone to sleep, i would hear my mom listening either to this, or to Micheal jackson's Bad or Dangerous albums on Tapes in her old Sound Boom hifi
And i would go to sleep each night to the sound of MJ or Rick.

@@hmpz36911 I'm still young and I wasn't around back in Nirvana time but I happen to think they grew is the most talented out of that band. He writes and sings and he plays more than one instrument. I feel like Courtney loves the one that rode his cocktails just based on documentaries I've seen. I like Dave but again I don't know every little detail and I only know what I've learned from asking people or old documentaries and things like that. I do know Courtney Love and Dave Grove aren't great friends LOL that's to be nice but I like the Foo fighters a lot more than Nirvana. I like guns n' roses better than both. I'm a hip hop head but over this last year of this virus, with lockdown and all, I have learned so much about older rock music from the '80s and '90s. Guns n' roses was so freaking incredible to me. I know the Nirvana and guns n' roses had some kind of silly spat. I digress but give me a break here I'm drinking an energy drink. Peace to you and I'm sorry about the way I feel. I think Dave grohl is too cool but once again I don't know everything he did 30 years ago or however long that was

Rick was 21 when this came out in 1987. It was his first song, he had 8 top ten hits in the next 5 years. He became disenchanted with the music business and retired at 27.
He has started gigging again and has released several albums in the past 5 years. His first new one, 50, premiered in the UK at number one. I prefer his newer songs, he looks more like his voice.

My favourite rickroll is the macy's thanksgiving parade.
Rickrolling was one of the very first memes. You gotta understand, nothing had previews yet, so you didn't *actually* know what someone sent you until after you click it. It's like how prank calling doesn't work anymore since everyone has caller ID. Like, eventually people started embedding it into stuff like you said, but that's how it started.
Rickrolling actually did a lot for internet security, by making people be more cautious clicking on links, but it did so with a song so good you were never really mad to hear it. How many songs can honestly say the improved humanity? 😆

  • @ericmeador1390

RICK-ROLLING was not just used as a substitue for other songs. People would RICK-ROLL others in all kinds of devious ways. i.e. Sometimes someone would be doing like a presentation at work or school using video playback then partway through BAM. Suddenly not a presentation on business costs or a book report, but MFing Rick Astley. Rick-Rolls were embeded in digital pics, all kinds of stuff. Ya'll should just check out vids of people actually getting Rick-Rolled.

Haven't been Rickrolled in a while - and I ain't mad atcha. Edit: OK guys... being rickrolled is when you receive an email that says "check out these cute puppies!!" or something like that and provides a link. You click on the link and instead of puppies, you're watching Rick Astley declare his not giving upness. You wouldn't be able to stop the video. Many times you'd have to turn off your computer. It was funny the first 80 times, but after that... it got a bit old. Certainly didn't hurt his career any, tho, so well done.

VERY indicative of the late 80's pop scene, courtesy of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who created a certain sound from their, 'factory', that became synonymous of what was described as manufactured pop music. Which wasn't anything new, but you could tell a SAW song a mile off, as they all basically sounded the same. Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, (who were successful Australian soap actors at the time), also had some chart success thanks to them.

Just to add on top of Brad's explanation: "Rick Rolling" originally was as Brad described, where videos would be uploaded with clickbait titles/thumbnails - some even open with a few seconds of video that seemingly relate to the title/thumb, only to suddenly cut to this music video/song. Thus, anyone having clicked on the video is said to have been "Rick Rolled."
However, the term has since grown to include other situations. For example, if you're sitting in a restaurant and this song plays, you have been "Rick Rolled."

I remember the rumour was that Rick sang most of Kylie Minogue's songs...they just sped up the track, if you played a Kylie single at 33 instead of 45 it sounded like Rick.

      @StevesFunhouse 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You gotta be kidding me. What an incredibly stupid rumor ... one that's not worth posting, I might add. Kylie didn't need any help from Rick to sound tremendous, and anyone with an ear would know better.

A Rick Roll was an internet prank. You would send someone a "cool link" and when they clicked the link instead of whatever the cool link was supposed to be you were sent to this video. Hence, you were rolled to Rick Astley. Rick Rolled. LOL

There was a little more insidious version of being "Rick Rolled" that involved a bogus email or web link that if you clicked it would start the music video and you couldn't stop it until the video ended because the link was "never going to give you up!". It didn't do any damage, but if you did it at work of in class it could be embarrassing because some of them could set your computer's volume to max.

"Rick Roll" was a prank. It was typically a false link - you think you were going to something they told you check out - but the link actually took you to this song.
Also clips of this video would show up as edited into other videos where it wasn't expected like at work or school in a presentation.
A more family friendly version of the dik pics Tyler Durden would put in the movies at the movie theatre.
Yah most people are surprised when they see who is making this voice. Like Darrel Hall, the Righteous Brothers, Bee Gees, Michael McDonald - all of these have a WTH moment when people see what they look like. Much like the reaction we all had when we first heard what Mike Tyson SOUNDED like when he talked.

I have to say that Lex's reaction are just too cute. But the way you were both interacting was great!
By the way, there was a mash-up years later, with Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters and this song. It became so popular that in concert they actually had Rick Astley come on stage and do the mash-up with them. Dave Grohl, who used to be with Nirvana, starts playing "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and Rick Astley comes out and sings "Never Gonna Give You up" intertwined with what Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are playing. Its awesome! (Rick also does some pretty cool mic flips as he's singing ... totally cool and confident!) Here's the link if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/IdkCEioCp24/w-d-xo.html

A "Rickroll" is when someone sends you a link in an email, social media post, etc. usually saying to check out this cool X vid (X being anything other than a Rick Astley video, like on gardening or a truck rally or something) and then when someone clicks the link, BOOM.
This was from the very beginnings of TH-cam and boy oh boy did it get a lot of people lol.
