Welcome to Marillion! 40 years of catalogue to explore... They just released "An Hour Before Its Dark" with a different singer who's been with them since 1989. It has a "pop" style track on it called "Murder Machines". The sound has changed, but you can still hear the characteristic Marillion style.

Fish just stays along the road good guy very normal and always says hello. The bassist from the band my bro was in toured with him for a good few years when he left marillion.

It's from their album "Misplaced Childhood", and the kid in the uniform is his literal (allegorical?) misplaced childhood-- "And I saw a magpie in the rainbow, the rain had gone / I'm not alone, I turned to the mirror / I saw you, the child, that once loved".
Fantastic album. There are no cuts between tracks-- the album flows seamlessly from one song to the next.

Howdy ! You are missing the point mate… It is the end of a love story . The two of them have known each other since childhood but they are now separated . When you see them hand in hand with a boy for him and a girl for her walking away from one another : the boy and the girl represent their respective childhood . They fell in love as kids , got together but now walk separate was as adults. The whole clip is an allegory of lost childhood, lost love 👍.
I am french but was living In London when the song came out and stayed in «Belsize Park » Fish mentions in the lyrics so every time I hear it , it brings me back happy memories of days gone by.TCB.

Afaik Kayleigh is an amalgam of several of Fish' relations, but primarily the one with Kay. The end came in oct 2012, when Fish posted on facebook that she passed away.

Thank you Qofy, I appreciate you taking the time for this reaction. I remembered this song from when I was in Highschool. When my second child was born the name came to mind. I miss her now since she moved across the country.

The singers real girlfriend was called Kay Lee. It's a mix of past relationships for him.

The lead singer of Marillion at that time was a guy who went by his stage name of FISH.
    Real name Derek William Dick.
Fish is a really well-built guy at 6 ft 5 inches tall he was too tall for his bath!
You have actually got what I believe is the better version of this particular song I.e. the extended version.
I love the video that goes with it too.

Well, with a name like that, Fish is an improvement, right? I mean, Dick Dick Dick... I wonder if that was his real name, now. It sounds like a prank in itself.

Fun little story: Back in the 80's I went on a bus from Denmark to watch a concert with Marillion in Hamburg, Germany.
Since beer was VERY much cheaper then in Germany than in Denmark (still is to some degree), the bus had a stop just south of the border in Germany, so we could replenish our supply of beer.
The trip to Hamburg is only about 150 km, but the onboard toilet was out of order... so by the time we got to Hamburg... in the middle of a large city, and a lot of people on the bus who REALLY had to take a piss... the chauffeur finally gave in, and opened the door on the bus.
I swear (!!!): In a cross section in the middle of Hamburg City, we were pissing out the door of the bus onto a Mercedes. The driver was obviously not pleased, turning on the wind shiled wipers.
I have to admit, I don't really remember much of the concert.

This is a true story about his breakup with Kay Lee. They did meet again later and became friends but there is a very tragic ending to the story. Watch Fish (the singer) explain how Kayleigh was written (it's on youtube) and you will fully understand the whole story behind the song. The girl in the video was his then wife Tamara.

Marilion is a band that did a lot of concept albums. Misplaced Childhood is one of those albums meant to be listened to start to finish and it will tell a story.

Yes, where did all that reverb come from? I always thought their original mixes were on the dry side, they could've used MORE reverb. But somebody went to the other extreme on this one
