Marillion is the scientific explanation for the existence of my ears.
This is one of my favourite songs in the world, each band member pulling through, H with the passionate vocals and his commitment to the song, Rothery with the tastful solos and feel, Pete Trewavas is my favourite bassist, and Ian Mossley has such calming, relaxed but unexpectedly complex drumming style, And Mark Kelly providing all the atmosphere. Like you say is a relatively simple song, but all of their performances make it be much more, and believe it or not, as good as their live versions are, the studio recorded version is also great.
The music of Marillion is very lyric-dependent if you seek to really be moved emotionally by the song. "Neverland" is a tribute by a guy to his long term woman whom he had, perhaps, come to take for granted until one day it dawns on him what a huge part of his life this woman has been. He realizes that anyone, even a fool, would see her love inside him. It has made him what he is, allowed him to become someone who someone would want to be. The usage of the Neverland meme is shorthand for expressing the idea that he would like to return, with his woman, to the days when their lives were filled with wonder. She is in the kitchen, doing her wife chores, and he imagines her dreaming about those same days, and he wants her to fly away with him, once more, back to Neverland where the young never grow old and every day is an adventure.

This song still blows me away and I think it's because something about the relative understatement of the arrangement keeps pulling you into the song. And the drama of the vocal performance is compelling. Ian Mosely is a very clever drummer who adds a lot of subtle touches without ever seeming flashy or over-energised.

Lovely video about Neverland one of my favourite songs from Marillion one of my favourite bands I never worry too much about what the lyrics are about I tend to listen to the rifles over another instrument and I either like it or I do not and I really like this one, I feel I must mention king is one of my all time favorites and also the album brave which I really like and thank you for uploading something nice .

Whenever they play in a venue near me, the small company I work at does catering for them and then I can go with AAA pass to the concerts (marillion, Steve Rothery band, Steve Hogarth solo).
Since I'm a fan for over 20 years it was really a nice surprise when their tour management asked us for catering about two years ago.
H is kinda a diva but the other guys are really nice and humble, especially Pete (bass) and Steve Rothery (guitar).
And Neverland is always a special highlight on the concerts and it's usually their last song. One of my favourites.
One of my favorite bands and this is definitely one of their best songs. Marillion have had a very long, very diverse and interesting career, beginning as a kind of Genesis-worship band and evolving into the band that would pioneer neo-prog. They were a huge influence on Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson. It was nice hearing this version since I'm only familiar with the studio version, but I plan to explore Marillion's (copious!) live recordings soon. They seem to be a really killer live band in general. Hope you're feeling better!
Much of the music criticism that massacred Marillion in the 80s and 90s has now died, become senile or fallen into irrelevance. I'm happy to see that the new generations - free from prejudice and the hateful opinions of unhappy journalists - are appreciating Marillion's music more and more.
Part of it could be that Marillion was ahead of their time. I find this to be quite tame and fairly incapable of receiving scathing comments but that's also from a modern lens. I've also listened to their song "The Invisible Man" which I'd describe similarly. But musical tastes change over time and I suppose this could have been something that seemed grating or obtuse during an earlier decade.
Happiness is the road by Marrilion is one of my favourites. Try it sometime!

I don't listen to much Marillion these days, and my personal preference is for the Fish-era, but all that aside Trewavas is still my flat-out favourite bassist of all time.
Ever since Fish left and Hogarth joined, I've been a stubborn Fish-era supporter and even Hogarth-Marillion critic: "too lame", "boooring" etc. But I'm (reluctantly of course) slightly beginning to realise that the Fish era wasn't as good as I once thought, and that the Hogarth-version has made loads of (more) interesting music. It's painful in a way. I think it became a parallel to Gabriel era Genesis but they were never remotely close and the Marillion of today still makes very superior music to what Genesis did on their last albums. I think I might have been a grumpy old man about Marillion ever since my early 20's. Time to refresh 😊
@@progperljungman8218 I feel "lucky" in a way as I came to Marillion way late into the Hogarth-era so I didn't have the innate bias for the Fish-era. When I explored their discography for the first time my thought was that the Fish-era was more consistent, but very imitative of Genesis; while the Hogarth-era was really inconsistent, but that Marillion as a band developed their own unique voice. If asked for my top 5 Marillion it would be Brave, Clutching at Straws, Misplaced Childhood, Marbles, and F.E.A.R. (in roughly that order).

Ahh you picked the wrong live performance. The one from Marillion weekend 2009 live at Port Zeland is so much better as a performance. It's easy to find here on TH-cam and id really recommend going and watching.
1) There’s no wrong performance from them.
2) This is in fact the one you mentioned.
